    People have monitored the IP traffic of Deepin, audited code, and the consensus is that no; Deepin is no less inherently insecure than any other distro. If your OPSEC starts and ends with your choice of distribution then you're already being monitored and bought/sold to advertisers, governments, and intelligence agencies without your enthusiastic consent -- No need to scaremonger about Chinese people listening in too.
    Deepin isn't some kind of special exception, but it really rubs me the wrong way to see people suggesting literally anything from China is a government conspiracy without actually researching or auditing anything. At which point do we have to consider if there's an irrational reason that so many people assume anything Chinese is government controlled?

    • @azareii
      @azareii ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the main concern is that any Chinese company is legally obligated to give their government data if requested, though that is by no means unique to China.
      The real issue is the constant fear-mongering there is when it comes to China.

      Even if it was controlled by the Chinese government, what the heck does the Chinese government have to care about the majority of people in the West? Sure, if you are a government employee or something you should maybe not use it, but it otherwise really doesn't matter. You're not a citizen of China, even if they're spying on you they can't do anything with that information. You ought be more concerned with the data you give your own government.

    Deepin is made in China, distributed from China, it has a EULA, has it's own exclusive installer, has it's own exclusive default browser, has it's own app store, you don't have to use SUDO to install their software, their software comes from repositories in China, generic names for their preloaded apps, everything about the Chinese distribution makes you feel comfortable to use it, software that minimizes to the systray rather than close, CPU intensive, requires a recently modern machine because it uses lots of resources, snap & flatpak are not included.......

    I had this installed last week and while it's a very good, very solid distro, your previous tier video turned me on to Solus and Budgie won me over faster than a cockatiel can raise a foot and blow you kisses! 😆 My only problem with Solus is "strong and complicated passwords" are a no-go - it requires at least 6 characters (but that requirement can be disabled) and disabling the lock screen in the GUI had no effect when waking from sleep. I had to use a Terminal command from the Manjaro forum to disable that. Budgie's awesome, though. 🥰

    I think they've named htop as "Htop" with a capital "H" which is why the terminal didn't run it. Nice review Derek. I wish they'd add some Deepin speciifc cool tools like MX Linux has (chroot rescue, boot repair, snapshot, driver installer etc) so that it goes beyond a gorgeous but basic OS.

    • @GioGziro95
      @GioGziro95 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Bitter Truth, it's probably a containerized app, not a Debian package. They developed their own package manager, because everybody knows, all we need in Linux is more packaging formats.
      You can probably manually symlink its executable inside _/usr/bin,_ or add its location to _$PATH._ Works for Flatpak, so it might work here too. To find out the location of the executable, you can open the corresponding *.desktop file from _/usr/share/applications_ and look for the _exec=_ line.

    • @bittertruth6575
      @bittertruth6575 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GioGziro95 I disagree on it being a container. I think they are probably still using the Debian repos and packages under the hood of their package manager to download 'standard Debian packages' and probably concentrating all their developing efforts into their own Deepin desktop apps only. Fedora does stuff like you mentioned but that is because it develops for business/enterprise and therefore the effort is worth it. Deepin on the other hand is mostly for your average home user so I can't really see them going through all that especially since they focus so much on aesthetics too.

    • @GioGziro95
      @GioGziro95 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@bittertruth6575, I think you missed the news. They use Debian packages for the base system, but they developed Linglong for third-party apps. For more info, look up "linglong deepin". (I tried to post a link, but my comment got flagged as spam and disappeared.)

    • @bittertruth6575
      @bittertruth6575 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GioGziro95 I probably did. The last time I used it was a few years ago when I was distro hopping. I''ll check Linglong out. Even more reason to stay away since I love Debians's stability and it's packages have been rigourously tested. Thanks.

    • @GioGziro95
      @GioGziro95 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bittertruth6575, in theory, Linglong has some really good ideas. They explain why they developed it on their blog; but I think they should've worked with the rest of the Linux community to improve Flatpak rather than creating yet another package manager for Linux.

      @@ximplex1 Cinnamon DE is really the champion. One of the 2 DEs usable on modern 4k laptops because of good-working fractional scaling support. Second one is KDE Plasma but it is VERY RAM-hungry and GUI is bloated.
      PS. Cinnamon DE works great on top of Arch. This combo is far better than genuine Mint: my Ryzen9 5900HX CPU has 5 degrees lower temperature and laptop use less battery power on the same scaling_governor, scaling_driver and ryzenadj presets. Looks like an alternative for Arch-based new-user friendly distributives (Manjaro). The more variations, the more people would find their own starter distributive, i believe.
    The main goal is to make more people aware of the existence of an alternative to proprietary one. For this to work, the list of alternatives for new users should consist of stable polished releases (so there is no disappointment). Graphical part is already more than enough, in my opinion (new users can pick of KDE, Gnome).

    There are just too many red flags with this project. It’s not that it’s Chinese, it’s that it has actual ties to the Chinese government. They collect a TON of personal information from you when you create a Deepin account and log into their App Store, including your IP address every time you log in to determine where you’re logging in from, and your personal email address. Do not use this product if you value your privacy. Saying that really bums me out because I WANT to like it so badly, but my research indicates too many security concerns.
