    My family originated from old Kilnsea (lost to the sea in 1820) and other villages also lost like Owthorne.
    The ITV did a story about this coastline eroding about 10 months ago abs in accordance with their agenda attributed it to Global warming. I was fuming. This coastline has been eroding since Roman times. They can’t accept that this, as sad as it is is a long standing geographical issue and not a man made phenomenon to be politicised for point scoring purposes.

    • @AnthonyFrancisJones
      @AnthonyFrancisJones  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks very much for this and I do hope you felt that I did the topic justice. I cannot comment on ITV as I did not see it but there may be a link with global warming or more importantly 'climate disruption' causing more frequent and stronger storms speeding up the erosion. Also many of the manmade protection features have increased the erosion too but all of this aside it has been happening for 1000s of years too and will continue to do so. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and facinating to hear of your family background. I feel a deep sense of sympathy for those that lived there and of course those in my other film on Hallsands which was clearly a manmade phenomenon. Many thanks for watching.

    could anyone tell me where n the holderness coast is currently at risk from flooding and further erosion

    • @AnthonyFrancisJones
      @AnthonyFrancisJones  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main problem is erosion as you can see from the film. Much of buildings are quite high up so it is the erosion of the land they are on that is the issue not flooding. Hope that helps.

    at 4:10 what is the type of Bay you said had formed?

    • @AnthonyFrancisJones
      @AnthonyFrancisJones  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      LIv, this is a crenulate (shaped) bay caused by erosion due to the terminal (last) groyne. Crenulate refers to the shape - notched out or a sort of smooth curve shape like a shell. I am not sure the bay has a specific name other than this. Hope that helps.

    is there any soft engineering on the holderness coastline

    • @AnthonyFrancisJones
      @AnthonyFrancisJones  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oliver - thanks for your question - yes, there is some. I am not sure how 'managed' the managed retreat is but it is clear that some areas of land are being left to erode. Beach nourishment has also been used but it is hard to get shots of that happening! You might see on some of the shots, though I don't mention it, there are places where grass etc. has been encouraged to grow back and act as a bit more protection. Talking to residents it was clear that the storms they have had recently were so destructive that even hard engineering can take a battering. Hope you enjoyed the film and found it of some use and interest.

    is this a concordant or discordant coastline?

    • @AnthonyFrancisJones
      @AnthonyFrancisJones  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am not giving an expert opinion but it's not really layers of different hard and soft rocks - more just a great depth of glacial till so it is a bit like a concordant coastline but you do not have a layer of hard rock protecting it so I would not define it as such at all. I am happy to stand corrected...

    Are there any facts about how much erosion has changed since the 20th century, in relation to climate change speeding up the process? As I am trying to find some spatial and temporal factors related to my A-Level Geography. Thanks.

    • @AnthonyFrancisJones

      An excellent question George. I don't have data to hand - one place to start would be to compare old and new maps as well as aerial photographs (NLS database? Does your school subscribe to Digimap?). I think this will be a very difficult link to show as so many variables come into play. You might find a change in erosion rate over time but being sure that it is climate change causing it will be difficult! Interesting problem and best of luck with it.
