    The Edge is more of a guitar engineer than just a composer. He makes his guitar sound right all the times. He designs his sound.

      It’s funny, I’m almost the same age as you and started playing guitar around the same time as you as well.
      Edge was the first guitarist I was into but I completely understand how someone could have the perspective that his playing is minimal and uses effects and thereby see that as a bad thing.
      Much respect to you for coming around to appreciate his playing. I could learn from your experience I think.

    The first time I ever listened to The Joshua Tree was the first time I listened to The Edge more carefully. With his guitar and effects he was creating wide open spaces, endless deserts of echoing sound under looming blue skies, booming thunder in the far off distance. I was 15 and I never heard anything quite like it from another guitarist.

    U2 is Bono and The Edge together it couldn't work any other way. The Edge is a genius. You cannot discredit him and say he uses too many effects bc effects are created to be used just as a guitar is. I dont know if The Edge creates his sound along with a technician but the sound along with his melodies and solos are like where the bar is set on how to use a guitar with effects and not over or under do it. The Edge = musical genius

      @AOH Patty that's quite the wall of cope. I don't need to sell millions of boring records to have an opinion mate. People are slowly forgetting them like most artists over time. • @totoroid
      @totoroid 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @AOH Patty if everyone who plays guitar at a high level agrees then why is there the stigma of others who believe what I said? You really think EVERYONE sniffs his nuts? I'd bet anything that it's not true. And no I'm not a musician anymore haven't played in a few years but I live in Hollywood and worked on mini docs covering tons of people in the recording/production industry as well as young artists in a ton of genres. I see a lot of the "are you a guitarist?" "how many records have you sold" arguments and they really don't hold a lot of weight. He's successful but criticism can come from anywhere and to dismiss it through gatekeeping doesn't somehow make your defense untouchable

    Edge has written some of the most iconic, riff-laden, memorable guitar licks in the history of rock. I'm a guitar snob, and I think he's a total badass. He deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as Clapton, Page, Hendrix....because he's that good. Take those classic U2 songs he played in this clip, and put your run-of-the-mill barre chords on them that most guitarists would schlep, and they become forgettable accompaniment to Bono's singing.

    He has a unique guitar sound (although he has 100 different effects). He wrote and recorded lots of songs and albums that are classics in pop and rock - and his guitar sound (and bono's voice) are the marks that made U2 one of the most successful bands in the 80s and 90s. What the hell gives all these dumb assholes the right to say that he can not play guitar. He is not Satriani or Vai, he is not Knopfler or Gilmour, he is not Bonamassa or Beck, nor Clapton, Cale or Gibbons. He is The Edge - someone who deserves respect for his effective playing.
