I was beyond in love with Leif, back in the 70's as a teen. I really feel for him. I think he is a good , compassionate soul who just got in way too deep with the drugs, way too young. I've read his book and he basically was throw to the wolves at age 15 to tour the world with no one watching out for him. His mother didn't accompany him. Really, what teenage kid could handle that? ... I hope, now that he just turned 61 (11/8/61) he's doing o.k. and has someone to love and love him back.
I always felt a sadness about him, even when he was younger. As if he was being pressured to do what was not his true calling. Drugs was a part of 'the scene' then and even though he has been through rehab there is always that chance of a relapse. I loved him then and love him now...2020!
I have compassion for him. His face begs for someone to care and to hug him. He needs to let out a lot of emotions and have a deep, long cry. I bet if he did that he would feel free of a lot of demons from his past and be able to go forward. I wish him well. The entertainment biz sucks you dry, throws drugs at you, and then messes your life up and you are stuck alone to climb out of the mess you are in. Please get healthy Leif. I pray for you. If you want to do any acts of kindness then do them in private. Perhaps he would have taken her up on her offer if it had been private. My husband and I have helped many people financially. We never loan money. We will give what we can afford. We ask the recipient not to tell anyone & a one time thanks is enough...no need for an overt show of thankfulness. The money we give is not a loan. The last rule, we will only help a person out once financially. We are not rich enough to be anyones safety net. Many folks are embarrassed about tight finances ....we want to help....not exacerbate the problem. I can't imagine deeper problems like mental illness or drug use. Most people want their issues to remain private. I just think its cruel & self serving to out a persons weakness in public.
I absolutely love his song "Keep on Dancing" I was a child but love that song. I feel badly he was so unhappy & turned to drugs. But a lot of artists of all types created while on drugs. If you’ve read his book, you would know how naïve his mother was so she wasn’t able to protect her son from them. He grew up lonely and confused and did what he was told by his management. Given his sensitive and gentle personality it’s easy to see how his childhood and adolescent years would be difficult for him to navigate the predatory entertainment industry
Leif Garrett had a difficult life. Someone was always trying to control his whole life. Even his sister stepped out of the spotlight. His sister played on my three sons.
It was tragic. He lost it all, his fame, his unbeatable good looks, all gone. It's sad to watch such a fall. I was shocked when I first saw the change. I was all like is this really Leif Garrett? Kind of like the ugly duckling story in reverse. Worse downfall I ever witnessed.

People stay in hospital after an injury and get drugs for pain, and they don't leave the hospital as drug addicts.... in general.... this whole anti-drug culture has been formed by media hype, propaganda, and overblown, fanatical, falsifiable information.
MrDBarch CrazYCompoZeR That's not completely true. Some DO come out dependent on pain meds. It happened to me at 13. That was 1978 and the doctors didn't know I was detoxing. I was in the hospital 55 days at 13 years old getting a shot of Demerol every four hours. That's a lot of Demerol and I complained and fought not wanting it to begin with, but at 13, I had no control of my body. It wasn't my decision. By about day 20 I was begging for my shots.
Alcohol is the drug that lowers morality and resistance. It is also listed as the number one most dangerous of all drugs by the World Health Organization. Weed has a tendency to make a person cautious to outright reticent to try other drugs. If you're going to come down on a gateway drug at least go after the one that has proven itself to be the most dangerous. Do some research! See how many deaths are alcohol related and how many are marijuana attributed and get back to me.

@@debbieanne7962 From what I have read and heard, some clinics etc DO have methadone programs. I think they have to walk in daily. Mostly inner cities. Some Doctors can prescribe Suboxone , but they need additional training, so just some Doctors can and they usually cannot even take that many patients (waiting lists. Only allowed a certain # of patients) I checked into this for an ex a few years back.
She only claims not to be judgmental but if you listen to anything she says it’s obvious that she is very judgmental. She said in another interview that he had a red gash on his cheek from smoking some drug that concerned her and she wouldn’t have him back. Leif was still using when he did this interview.

Looks to me he was and has been self medicating. He seems to be a tad touched, not as smart as his peers, but trying much harder to keep up. No wonder they found him an easy target. I feel bad for him, but he could have chosen to say no to the drugs and driving high. We all have hard times to go through, but it's how we deal with our hard times that counts. He chose to continue to be famous, and with that he paid a price. He could have turned away, and stayed in school. He chose to sell his soul.

He's right...one thing does lead to another. Weed is a gateway drug to heavier dope if you decide to stay on that road.
What a crock! Every drug is a "gateway" as is alcohol. People stay in hospital after an injury and get drugs for pain, and they don't leave the hospital as drug addicts.... in general.... this whole anti-drug culture has been formed by media hype, propaganda, and overblown, fanatical, falsifiable information.
MrDBarch CrazYCompoZeR That's not completely true. Some DO come out dependent on pain meds. It happened to me at 13. That was 1978 and the doctors didn't know I was detoxing. I was in the hospital 55 days at 13 years old getting a shot of Demerol every four hours. That's a lot of Demerol and I complained and fought not wanting it to begin with, but at 13, I had no control of my body. It wasn't my decision. By about day 20 I was begging for my shots.
Alcohol is the drug that lowers morality and resistance. It is also listed as the number one most dangerous of all drugs by the World Health Organization. Weed has a tendency to make a person cautious to outright reticent to try other drugs. If you're going to come down on a gateway drug at least go after the one that has proven itself to be the most dangerous. Do some research! See how many deaths are alcohol related and how many are marijuana attributed and get back to me.

He wasn't withdrawing, he was using.

@@debbieanne7962 From what I have read and heard, some clinics etc DO have methadone programs. I think they have to walk in daily. Mostly inner cities. Some Doctors can prescribe Suboxone , but they need additional training, so just some Doctors can and they usually cannot even take that many patients (waiting lists. Only allowed a certain # of patients) I checked into this for an ex a few years back.

She’s terrible with him and he’s doing his best. Never heard a good word about her.
She only claims not to be judgmental but if you listen to anything she says it’s obvious that she is very judgmental. She said in another interview that he had a red gash on his cheek from smoking some drug that concerned her and she wouldn’t have him back. Leif was still using when he did this interview.
You'd want someone using hard drugs on your show? I realize addiction is an illness. I also don't blame her for not wanting someone high on the show.

Looks to me he was and has been self medicating. He seems to be a tad touched, not as smart as his peers, but trying much harder to keep up. No wonder they found him an easy target. I feel bad for him, but he could have chosen to say no to the drugs and driving high. We all have hard times to go through, but it's how we deal with our hard times that counts. He chose to continue to be famous, and with that he paid a price. He could have turned away, and stayed in school. He chose to sell his soul.

Touched? He's making perfect sense. He's not struggling to understand. He's very gentle & emotionally fragile, but the word touched implies he's not sane. He seems sad but sweet. I'm sure being a teen star took a toll. Look at Britney & the way they made her not use her real deeper vice & turned her money over to her Dad who has no financial knowledge & is also bi polar when their justification for doing so was....she's bipolar
