How Much Can a New CDL Truck Driver Make Monthly in 2024

  • Curious about how much a new CDL truck driver makes weekly or monthly in 2024?
Find out in this video, plus tips on managing your clock for maximum pay!
This 2024 video for new CDL commercial big rig 18 wheel truck drivers explains how I maximize my driving clock time to get the most hours behind the wheel, versus worrying about detention pay etc.
Although I'm new to the business, I already am averaging over 1000 week take home, by focusing on keeping my driving clock available versus staying on duty when I'm held up for any reason at a shipper or receiver.
I learned early in this business that focusing your attention on where the most money is made by you is your best bet, not chasing an hourly figure (detention pay only starts after an hour of sitting, and it averages out horribly if you do the math, versus driving and averaging 24 bucks an hour).
People thinking about getting into this truck driving business need to use common sense and stay focused on the bigger money per hour, not the smaller stuff.
If these videos are helping, please subscribe, like, comment and share.
    Thanks for watching

Hey! I saw this video when I first got my CDLS In October 2018. Just recapping the videos that helped me get started.. and after being here almost my first year as a new driver I wanted to say that I remembered these words and wanted to return back to you and say thank you because this worked for me!
To any new driver reading the comments, this man is very wise and positive, if you haven’t subscribed to him already, you need to. He’s great for the TH-cam Truck Driver/ CDL community.
if you just follow what he says as a guideline.. you will succeed and get great results.
I’m so glad I stumbled across you because I remember you saying it’s a hustle. You always talk about how beautiful it is out here; when I first started I was a little scared, didn’t know if I would make it, but now it’s a lifestyle and I’m enjoying it, and I agree, it is beautiful out here!

I hear what you are saying and I followed the same logic during my short/9 month trucking career back in the day. It was a huge mistake to do that and here is why: Doing that will have dispatchers sending YOU and not other drivers to all of the locations that have you waiting hours and hours. Once they learn your logging pattern you will actually work longer hours for the same pay. It gets worse and worse. You will spend more time sitting at shippers and less time driving. Even if you manage to get your miles in you will be sure to be using an entire day. If you run yourself out of driving hours a few times your company will no longer sacrifice your time at the docks. They need the truck to move too. When you sit for them for nothing then still move the needed amount they get you working more for the same pay. You get tired etc. You might think you are working the system and being smart but you are not. You are being used. Think about it. Think bigger and longer term. if I had it to do over again I would do it this way.

Running your clock out every day won't help recaps. That is if you're into watching for that. I've run on recaps for an entire week because I ran on average 9.5 hours daily before my 70 ran down with the exception of the time I carried over. Carry over time rolling into recaps can benefit you so much. I ran until I came up to a time where I had to get a load in so I ran two days at 11 hours. Ended up with nothing but a 5.5 hour recap. So, I took a 34. Lots of drivers complain about ELD's taking over paper logs. Well, all I can say is manage your time to maximize your productivity. It'll suck at times, but embrace that suck to get past it.

Schneider was great except for the miles and truck break downs every other week. I brought $50 more home being in the 3 week training at $450 weekly than running regional @ $400 weekly about 1,100 miles at .36 cpm. Once health insurance kicked in, I was down to $275 weekly. Not sure since being the "new guy" the loads assigned to me where short, piddly miles. I asked my DM I need more miles. She said it would get better, but never did. Had to switch gears with hourly pay. What a difference making $800 weekly working 40 hours only plus OT when needed... I'd love to get back on the road, just not being in the same boat as before. Be safe out there RVT!

The outlook on life in general is how you perceive it. If you see the world as miserable then you'll be miserable. Red viking obviously see things in a different perspective so it makes driving more enjoyable. I see these drivers complaining about trucking and I'm here thinking how I wish they traded places with me, since I have to deal with upper management on a daily basis for my job. The pressure of making a good impression, writing reports, and dealing with stupidity in the workplace. Just seeing these truckers out on the road is like an adventure. Camping out at truck stops. The freedom and being away from the hectic work environment of a corporate company. Not having managers and directors breathing down your neck and dropping last min assignment on your desk.

there seems to be a distinction in the 4 sections of the logbook ( even on Elogs w/ qualcom... if you place your self off duty ya best be in the passengers seat or in the sleeper bunk ....when in the drivers seat "technically " is considered on duty not driving ..
although the paper logs are easier to be creative with ,,,the electronics qualcom ya cant fudge them ...
and if ya went onto the dock & got injured "being off duty ' your in trouble with saftey dept .
after driving 35 yrs now ,I've only used peoplenet & qualcom e logs ..for 4 mos ..and had to learn by mistakes ...but I maximized my time and put in 3,000 mi. a week I averaged 600 mi. a day for 6 days and 46.+ fuel bonuses & cents a mile thats a good check ....

Don't forget to not start your clock until your dispatch gives you a load. They don't tell you that in orientation. If your 10hour is over at 6 and your dbl doesn't come on shift til 7 and wont load you til 8, DO NOT START THAT CLOCK UNTIL THAT LOAD COMES ON THAT QUALCOMM. Otherwise you're going to piss half your hours away just sitting waiting on a load. If you have a dispatch who doesn't give a crap about you, you wont get a load til noon, and they'll run the piss out of you, while they go home at 5. Be advised.

Hey Moma D. You are going to have some shocks with driving for SWIFT or anyone. Though you may get more crap for SWIFT. But take that with a grain of salt. You get your experience that is what counts for the first year especially. Most first year trucking companies don't have the extras you may be offered after experience. I did want to add in the fact that people are wishy washy about what you get paid. The reason for that is as a new lady, we don't know the terms of your agreement. We don't know how much you like to run or are willing to run. It isn't a 9-5 job. Somedays you may drive 5 hours, the next you may drive 11. As long as you are watching your 70 hour clock and always keep 8-10 hours free so you do not have to do a 36 hour reset you can keep runnin miles. I have seen some checks as low as 500.00 wk but that was an off week and two days off to transfer into a new truck. For me, I was a single dad, I raised my kids, they are out of the house now so I pretty much sold most my belongings, including my house, being a single man I plan to be driving a lot anyway so I don't need a $1,800 house bill anyway. Thats 2000.00 in my pocket on top of the average beginner driver of 700-1100 wk depending on your routs and freight available. Once in a great while I treat myself to a nice hotel, back rub, good breakfast and back on the fly making money. There are plenty of ways to make money trucking it just depends on your situation and what you are comfortable doing within DOT requirements. Best of luck to you! James

In the video you said "you have a 70 hour clock and that is all you can work" That is inaccurate. The h.o.s. are what is known as driving rules. What that means is that when you reach that 70 hours you can no longer drive until you have regained time or reset your clock. However you can "work" or spend time on duty, you just can not drive.

Red Viking Trucker I live in Fresno, CA. Got my CDL and paid $1800 for tuition myself at United Truck Driving School. Graduated October 24th. Took a week for DMV computer outages to come back up and print out my license. My good friend from truck school has been trying so hard to get me a local job at Valley Iron, it's a local distribution center in Fresno. Perfect job for me and my family. Benefits, $17/hour, 7:00am-4:00pm Mom-Friday. Already did my skills test and everything. But they just stopped reaching out to me or responding to the 2 messeges I left on the hiring managers machine and the owners. Plus my teachers and schools owner is good friends with the owner and they recommended me as well. But I guess they won't hire me idk why. Gonna ask them tomorrow. But yeah thanks for responding and reading my story. I'm really stuck right now, can't get a job anywhere. Besides Swift but god I don't wanna do that.

something is wrong brother. ask your school tomorrow if they are federally accredited. every company i spoke to hired new grads, and only one required a SPECIFIC school for the 160 hours. the second requirement was to have manual transmission training as part of that 160 hours.

on duty. off duty, doesn't matter once you start your 14 hour clock. might just as well stay on duty and collect some detention dollars. the only way going off duty makes any difference is if you're off 10 hours... Then your 14-hour resets.

"i go off duty after im backed into the dock, and my 11 hour driving
clock stops, yes. in my company, i have to stay on duty to even apply
for detention, so i just ignore it all together and focus on my driving

I never hear you talking bad about people or particular company's. you were smart and did your homework. My friend I'm doing my homework too. I built houses for ten years on the Outer Banks, did a stretch in the National Guard and now I'm considering driving trucks for a living. Ive gotten my DOT physical and driving permit and I'm starting school in a couple weeks. Your squared away man. Your definitely a professional, and you have great informative videos on your channel. Right now I'm trying to get a list together, of questions I would need to ask recruiters for future Employment. I was a 92f in the guard and I went to Fort Knox and got H7 certified on a M970 in 2012. I found out then and there I have a passion for trucking and I believe I'm going to lean towards tanker- hazmat side of the industry . Before I start school I will have those endorsements if not all even though I don't want to drive doubles or triples you never know if I may need them. Red Viking, If you start at 6.00 am, you have 14 hours to get 11 hrs. driving in. When you are held up at load sight it doesn't matter if you are asking for detention pay for that time or going off duty for that time, you are still loosing driving time by being idle and not driving. Your cannot extend your 14 hour period but just hope to get on the road again to get those miles rolling. I don't really see any valid point you're trying to make with clocking out because you can't add those hours to extend the 14 hour period for that particular time frame or day.

As long as you're not doing any work and you're free from being responsible for the vehicle; you can even still be getting paid and be off duty as long as you're 100% free to wander off and do whatever you want. I took advantage of this as a school bus driver because I would get paid hourly for the entire length of a field trip but during downtime where I'm just watching a football game or something this can be logged as off duty

While I agree with going SB in a Dock. Please don't misinformation people that that's within regulations. It's not! By law, anytime you're being loaded or unload, that entire time is suppose to be logged as "On Duty, Not Driving". If D.O.T pulls you over and looks, they'll see where you were in the SB and your Bills were done. They can give you a Ticket then. Also, with you sitting in the Drivers seat, you can't be "Off Duty" or in the Sleeper. As I said, I agree with what you're doing. Just know it's not legal.

You may not be doing any work but that still is on duty time. Everything but your mandatory 30 minute break, sleeper berth, and 10 hour reset is on duty. Pre-trip, breakdowns, loading, unloading, and post-trip are all considered on duty. That's why you do some math and lie on your logbook or find a route with no weigh stations, which may not always be feasible.

You should get paid for everything you do when your on the road. Do not work for free! Period!!! Not even one hour. You give up all your home life, ruin your health, your already getting paid minimum wage. Why would you work for free? I have worked in trucking for 30 years and great driving record, and the y want to pay me minimum wage 70 plus hours a week let just say $1000 a week that's minimum wage. Wake up and stop working for free!!! Sorry to be a downer. But the truth always makes people angry. I love truckin! but I'm not doin it for free. Nice video very well done Rock On Brother!!!I will keep my happy ass in Alaska where they pay us to work.

    • @tjl8884
      @tjl8884 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

In 2005 I was making .38 cents a mile Canadian.. So whats the about .29 cents USD? and it worked out to about 10 bucks an hr for 70 hrs a week = 700 bucks a week or 1400 for 2 weeks.. Those minimum wage workers in burger king only work 30 hrs a week for 450/week.. You understand? What a trucker works in one week is nearly double a normal 8 hr shift.. And they work 7 days a week, some work 14 days straight like this guy said and only 2 days off.. He will burn out in 12 months working like that I guarantee it..
Now since I've been out of trucking, i only did it 3 years before I wanted to kill myself.. But back then the hours were different.. I heard the new hours, once you go on the clock, your on it and can't come off, so I don't know how this guy is coming off duty at a shipper (thats how it used to work) but I heard the new laws say once you one the clock you got 11 hrs to work.. or 15 total counting your off duty hours.. So you're not working past 15 hrs straight? At least that is how I understand it.. If that is the case, its not really any different to how I ran when I drove, I never stayed up longer than 15 hrs unless I was within an hour of delivery..
I also liked to run to about 3 or 4 am and shut it down close to the delivery site, usually backed up to their delivery docks. and sleep through the bullshit of them unloading me, which sometimes took 5 hrs or longer..
I can totally see this guy in the video getting burnt out really quick.. 2 days off for 14 worked is brutal.. I always took 4 days off to recoup my mental faculties if I was out 2 weeks.. You will literally go insane sitting in that cab all day for long periods..
The problem with this guys math which was .40 cents a mile at 60 mph = 24 bucks and hr.. He hasn't been doing it long enough to hit the down time and jerked around by dispatchers or fked around by loaders/unloaders who take 5 hrs to unload you.. When you factor all that in to his .40 cents a mile, he's making minimum wage because his truck is not moving all the time. That was one of the biggest pitfalls in this industry, the truck down time was brutal unless you were running ontario to texas every run, which meant very little downtime.. Unfortunately that doesn't happen...
Wait till you get back to back runs into chicongo lol.. What a shit show that city was, avoid it like the fkn plague.. East coast NY area is another shit show.. The troopers are fkn nazi's and there are toll booths every 5 miles in some spots..
it really comes down to getting good runs.. If he is new, they are probably trying to give him decent runs to make him think its a good living.. The only way to make decent money is if you own a truck.. Those guys were pulling some decent cash.. Company drivers get shit loads about 90% of the time.. And if you decline one fkn load, you get black balled.. That means east coast runs non stop, or shitty LTL loads over like 300 miles or some shit..
.40 cents a mile means they are using pc miler that fucks you out of miles.. at least 50 to 100 miles on long trips.. That shit adds up quick too..
If you are thinking of truckign as a career, all I can say is go get 2 minimum wage full time jobs, you would make more money, work the same hrs in a day and be home every day at least.

Assad Khalif depends where you live in Idaho minimum wage is $7.50 an hour and then if you take on top of that not working weekends you're not getting very much even if you are making $10 an hour but work 8 hour days and have weekends off comparatively speaking $1000 a week is not bad at all

      I realize this is an old post, but min wage is $7.25 x 40 = $290 x 2 = $580. You would need almost 4 minimum wage jobs.. Even 2x $10/hr jobs is only $800 for 80/hrs..
I get what you are saying, it's the same crap in almost every industry these days, but trying to make $1k a week off shitty jobs is kinda hard these days.

Trucking industry needs to be reworked. No work should ever be for free - ever. There should be a flat rate for every hour you are on the road. Lets just say $10 an hour for easy rounding and needs to be included in your sleep. Then they can figure out new rates on per mile pay. Truckers are under paid and under appreciated. I know some truckers state this is the easiest job they ever had, and I get that. However, you're away from home, family, friends, proper free time to do with as you please, etc. Only reason I am interested in driving is for money to pay down my wife medical debts and a couple other things. After having spent many hours researching this industry, I have come to realize it is very crooked.

27Zangle thats why you should become an owner operator and you can work whenever u want. 3 weeks out, 2 weeks home, 2 weeks out, 1 week home. Wherever u wanna do as long as it pays your bills. Thats what im gonna do. Get me an old used truck in the $30k range and im good

    • @27Zangle
      @27Zangle 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I've thought about that. I have a degree in operations for the oil / gas industry and plan to use that if possible. However, it is dead in my area and my wife is not real keen on relocating. So my thought was drive till oil industry in my area turns around.

    • @miguelrobb5719
      @miguelrobb5719 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

27Zangle correct me if im wrong, but isnt the oil industry booming in the texas area. As for relocating. I live in florida, so i dont know how frequent work is down here, but i know i can travel to the west park and hang out over there since work is plentiful and stay out for 2- 4weeks at a time and then come back to florida so i can chill with my wife. And then rense and repeat. I know trucking doesnt provide much of a personal life, but i strongly believe that the owner operator side is truly where its at. And thats because you get the best of both worlds. A schedule that you can control, and making more money. Im awarr of tbe expense of the truck, but thats to be expected

@@timmorris3056 Yeah but you'd probably have to work at McDonald's for multiple years in order to get a manager position. In truck driving you're making an average of 40,000 a year after 6 weeks of truck driving school and a month of training with a company. As a guy who worked for a construction company for almost a decade and never made more than 25,000 a year truck driving looks like a good career change for me.

I'll probably stick with what I love, even though aviation maintenance contracting is a fairly un-stable occupation often experiencing layoffs, then it's off to the new contract/location.

Now I agree you should be putting in for your detention time as you guys call it us we just call it waiting time and that is sweet some good companies give you $20 an hour after the 1st hour waiting now plus lets say tarping can be an additional 15-20 Dollars so that can add up fast now only a few grain hopper bottom guys will pay waiting time the next worst thing is percentage pay system a guy can get really screwed over that

There is no money in company OTR driving. You are getting a $1,000 a week before taxes and payroll deductions(medical, dental) etc. Your take home will be around $600 to $700 a week. 7 bills a week to be away from home, go without a shower for days, and live in a truck for weeks at a time. Do yourself a favor. Get your CDL on your own. Look for a local teamsters union job or just a local driver job. Hourly pay and home every night. Unless you want to become self employed company otr driving is a dead end life. Get a local job or apply for a municipal local Bus driver job. Better pay, better hours, better benefits. Truck companies are always hiring because the pay is garbage. Walmart pays well but you need 3 years driving experience. Take any local job you can get your hands on. Pay is better and your home everyday. I drive a bus for New Jersey Transit. Top pay currently is 30 dollars an hour. Time and a half past 8 hours, double time on holidays. That is 60 dollars an hour if I work Thanksgiving day. Full medical benefits, 401k, pension, uniforms, and union protection. Last year I made $105,000 with overtime and I get to workout 4 days a week, and sleep in my own house. No company otr driver in the US makes that kind of money including the guy making this video. Start your own business or get a local union/regular driving job. Fuck detention pay, maximizing hrs, and all that bullshit. Trucking is a 700 billion dollar a year industry. Too bad the drivers never see any of it. I paid off my house in 11 years, debt free, have savings, investment real estate, paid for cars and time to enjoy my house. You can keep that OTR bullshit.

I'm trying to understand exactly how this works... Do you literally drive 9-11hrs per day to give you a full 70hr week and then whatever you work on top of that which isn't considered driving hrs, you just let go and if the company pays you, then just consider it a bonus?? I've watched a few of your videos and it never seems clear to me what exactly is occurring regarding this particular topic.

Very informative and well presented video. I am considering a career in truck driving. Currently I am a non-CDL city delivery driver w/o benefits. Researching the best option for obtaining a CDL, looking into a couple of schools.

do you not extending your 11:14 the only thing you're extending is your 70 and being a new driver you should expect to stay out 7 to 14 days and you shouldn't have to ask for detention pay it should just be given to you so now instead of working 70 hours a week you're going to work 75 to 80 hours a week because when you're at that shipper or receivers property you're still working even if you're sitting in the truck and for the dod guidelines when you're loading or unloading even if you're not physically doing it you should technically be on-duty not driving if you're doing it any other way you're actually falsifying your log book and if you're in an accident and they go back and edit your log book and use the supporting documents like your bill of lading and it doesn't match up you are going to prison my friend and there's not going to be one dispatcher or company representative in that prison cell with you I'm just saying be careful and with you giving your time away for free even though it isn't as much as you can make while you were driving it's still making your average wage not more or less the smart thing would be Run Regional make 1700 to $2,000 a week before taxes and deductions of course and actually expect to get paid for the time that you put in turn your clock up so you can actually get home for the weekend and sleep in your own bed instead of logging off duty so you can do more work for them

He said in the video that he would use off duty time to make a video, call family, etc. and this absolutely does qualify as off duty time in the eyes of the DOT, as long as you're not doing any work and you're free to wander off from the dock and do whatever you want then you are off duty. If he was on standby or supervising the loading/unloading then that would be on duty not driving

Red this is an old. video that I stumbled across. Great info as always. Question. in the video you say that you "clock out " once your at the shipper. Does that mean you put yourself in the status as " off duty not driving " or "sleeper birth" Please explain thank you brother
