Except, it was Johnson who gutted reconstruction. The Civil War didn’t end until the passage of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act in the 1960’s
A question never answered - "What is the difference between 13 colonies declaring their independence from the British Empire in 1776 and 11 states declaring their independence from the United States in 1861?".
The difference is that the colonists in the 1770s who opposed British rule wanted either representation in parliament or to create a new republican government closer to home. The southerners in the 1860s on the other hand were fighting for the preservation and expansion of slavery.
@@ianblake815Just like London was a centralized power far away DC as centralized power far away. It was tyranny and corruption that started the war. Lincoln backed the banks during the bank wars. This was when the republic died and tyranny at home and imperialism abroad all started.
It’s a nice clean overview good for people who don’t know much about the civil war. It’d say the title is wrong. This is a 101 overview rather than some secret history.
This is the same biased information taught in schools. Notice the claim that the war started when South Carolina attacked Fort Sumpter. We're supposed to overlook the fact that Fort Sumpter is in South Carolina. Is it logical that South Carolina started the war by attacking South Carolina? The North refusing to leave and even reinforcing their hold on Fort Sumpter should be seen as the start of the war. Also, this video ignores the fact that Lincoln took away the states right to remain neutral, by forcing them to provide soldiers for the war. Virginia initially voted against seccession. They intended to remain neutral, until Lincoln tried to force them to fight against the Southern states. Dis they even mention that the North still had slavery in 4 states?
3:26 This map is inaccurate if you are describing what led up to the war. Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware were also slave states. Also, Virginia at that time included what is now West Virginia.
"With an industrial north, brimming with abolitionist fervor..." isn't quite accurate. Yes, there were abolitionists in the north, but they weren't the majority. History tells us that many of the northern troops were upset to hear that they were fighting to free the slaves, when they joined to preserve the union.
@@ianblake815 Exactly, the Corner Stone Speech says it all. I'll add a twist to it, you often hear the phrase "rich man's war, poor man's fight" and that was mostly true for the south, but it was worse than that. The institution of slavery didn't do one bit of good for the non-slave owning southerner, for the poor whites wages were held low, since they were competing with the cost of a slave hired or rented from a slave owner.

I learned in school that the civil war was fought over taxes. The federal government revenue income came from customs. They receive their income from tariffs. Personal income taxes were unlawful and illegal as determined by the Constitution. The South was 20% of the population and they had to pay 80% of the total federal tax revenue. They complained that this was unfair. Also, Lincoln freed the slaves near the end of the war because he was desperate for troops. Lincoln and Sherman were bloodthirsty murderers. General Sherman's march on the south was the first time in modern war that a country killed civilians. They raped and looted the Southern population. They burned their barns and homes. They took their livestock and burn their crops. Many civilians were killed in this war from disease and starvation.

I didn't see anything in this video I didn't already know from high school in the 1960's! Although I didn't read them, I read two reviews during my college stint which seemed interesting, although I am NOT espousing either of these: one argued there would have been a war even without slavery, because the South had English Gentry Protestant roots, and the North was mainly Irish-Catholic Working-Class roots. The other argued slavery would have died out on its own by the turn of the century because slavery was becoming too expensive economically for Southern slave owners. Again I don't espouse or support either, but they might have made for interesting reading. Semper Fidelis! CWO4 USMCR [Ret] 17 Feb 1969 - 1 Aug 2004
This was a Good summery. Of the Civil War . Your brave, opening statement about slavery not beging the key cause or issue was so refreshing.. in today's hate filled society. It was a whole bunch of issues and cultural difference. That caused it and you do a fine job of pointing that out. One thing you mention in your list is Uncle Tom's Cabin. That reminded me of a scene in North and South. Patrick Swasy's character takes a copy from his sister and tells her how it's making all southerners look bad and is written by someone who has never even been to the south. For those not familiar .His character is a strong loyal southerner who does his duty, but is totally against seperating from the Union.Bring up lack of economic growth as a point. Anyway. The reason I bring this up .I think it would actually be an interesting video.(if done right). Focusing on the little things that caused the War how different regions reacted, how families choices affected their children's lives(James,Hickock ECT).Even lesser known. I don't remember her name but about 10 yrs ago I seen a show on prime about abolitionists. A southern girl (forgot name)from S Carolina .Joins her dad at a slave auction. She is so repulsed by it As soon as she is old enough. She leaves home and joins the first major abolition newspaper. Becoming public enemy #1 in her old home state. Just some behind scene ideas thanks for reading, sorry for all the space,GOOD LUCK ON NEXT.
I hate it when someone starts with "What If I Told You" !!! You sound like an aluminum siding salesman!!! What if I told you I'm turning this video off and un subscribing !!!!!
It astonishes me that no one ever includes in their "history" of the prelude to the Civil War the Mississippi Cotton Bubble, and the widespread economic disruption it spread across the southern states.
The 13th Amendment was ratified in 1819. It was the Titles of Nobility amendment. 27 of 36 states ratified it by 1860. Historical state Constitutions show they accepted the original 13th Amendment. The original ratified amendment was 21 of 24 states. The only state rejecting the amendment was New York due to the amount of slave labor in that state.
A sorta reader digest history of the war. I have 4’ of bookshelf space for books dedicated the causes, the war and reconstruction ( so called). I understand the writer’s problem was too much information.
The 100 gun salute as Major Anderson was surrendering Ft. Sumter was not an act of defiance. General Beauregard, when writing the terms of surrender, specifically called for them to give their flag (the Stars and Stripes) a 100 gun salute. Unfortunately, somewhere around the 50th shot(I forget the actual number), there was an explosion caused by a burning ember that lit up the gunpowder and killed 2-3 soldiers. The only casualties of the whole ordeal.
At the start of the video you said that the civil war was not about slavery. During the video and at the end of the video I was hoping to hear about the other causes.
State's Rights and Morrill tariffs were southern concerns. Plus a guaranteed subservient role for Southern States,as the country grew westward, and congress became more antagonistic to Southern realities...
Unfortunately left out of this narrative was the fact that slavery was expensive the South wanted to mechanize they tried obtaining investors and loans from the Northern Banks, however none had interest in helping the South. The division was truly deeper than slavery, although slavery was the working component, States Rights were very much at the core of the Civil War afterwards, however the laws tying States to the Union were broadened so succession is not likely to happen.
Slavery was not as wide spread as people are lead to believe. Largely only rich people owned slaves and many of them were Jews. The war was much more about states rights and the federal government overstepping it's limits much like today.
States rights? Sure their right to have slaves. The federal government overstepping? Sure threatening to take away their slaves. The Jews? Sure that's why so many of the confederate leaders had Jewish names. Racist much?
The map incorrectly shows the territory of Virginia & West Virginia divided before the war's start. Also, slavery was still legal in West Virginia when it was admitted into the Union in 1863. Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky & Missouri were all states that still held slaves during the entire war. All of these areas are incorrectly shown in this video as not holding slaves.
