Even though I have watched all of our videos and learned so much, I am going to go through your entire herbal playlist with a notebook and write down all of the tips. Thanks Heidi you are awesome!!!

    I buy GINGER from the grocery store. Break them apart at the joint. I let them dry on news paper for week or 2. I plant them 1 inch deep in a large container after threat of frost is over. I plant them here in Collierville Tn in May. When it starts to turn yellow in the fall. Pull the up. Oh, I put a little straw on top for mulch. Thanks for your list!

    Both ginger and turmeric grow well in pots in the house. They do multiply and although the die back as the season change, they return to growth in a few weeks. I live in zone 5 in Canada and have had both growing in wide but relatively shallow flower pots for about 5 or 6 years. I started off with one root each in garden soil with compost that I sterilized. I put them on my deck every summer.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tried in pots inside and outside, they all just rot. One time I actually started to get some turmeric to grow inside but not long after the green popped up out of the soil, those died too. I may try again some day but for now I stock up on it in powder form so I can focus my time and energy on either new plants I have not tried yet or the things I know do well

      Yes, I also grow nettle and have a video on that, and holy basil (tulsi), I have tried for three years to grow ashwagandha but it does not do well but I am stocked up on it in a powder form. I have a great many more herbs I did not even mention in this video because of time (I could have easily made it an hour long) and I forgot to add a category I had intended and that was reproductive health: raspberry leaves, pineapple weed, and red clover were going to be the ones I mentioned in that

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      And that is really the best way to go about it, just adding a couple a year. I think it gives you more time to learn about the plant, how well it will do, how it grows, and if it will even do well. Then you can also properly prepare for the next year. Doing too much at once can be overwhelming

    Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have been trying to decide what herbs are higher priority to start with as I begin developing a medicinal herbs garden. I got elderberry cuttings started and we have a peppermint my daughter received last August that’s coming back. I have been checking out lots of herb books from the library and have a long list of plants I want to try. This video will help me decide what to try first. We also already have raspberries and strawberries and I harvested some leaves from them last summer after watching your videos on the benefits from them. So far I have only used them mixed into tea.

    Thanks for sharing your wonderful List of herbs. Here on Vancouver Island we have Seedy Saturday coming up March 7th where local seed savers gather to sell their seeds. It is a wonderful event, always nice to get seeds that were successfully grow in our area I think it helps ensure that they will be easier to propagate as their parents were already acclimatized to our area. This year I am adding Poke Weed after watching She is of the Woods video regarding it. I am hoping I can get a couple plants and that will be able to thrive here as it is not native to our area. I love this time of year when the soil is damp the crab grass and undesirable weeds are so much easier to dig out and the cool temps make it perfect weeding weather as long as those pesky rains hold off.

      I am hoping you can! This is my first year growing them and whenever I start a new herb, I always try starting indoors first because here, not all herbs do well when direct seeded. The following years some will do fine off the seeds they drop but not all. If I want more echinacea, I always have to start indoors then transplant, even from the previous year's seeds

(Husband got a new knife sharpener) Arggg! Anyhow, then it popped into my head that I had seen some yarrow coming up in my garden bed, so I went and grabbed some to stop the bleeding so I could finish up these carrots. So, How do I figure out the difference between "Wild Lettuce" and "Dandy Lion", ?? Some have told me that would be most beneficial for my situation, especially as I've cold turkey-ed oxy. Thanks to VA. Now drug ( 5 Months ) and alcohol free ( 14 Yrs ) , and working on the cigs. . . . ., just in time for COPD. Need a lung clear-er also. Thank You for your time and assist in every way. I know they look similar but I have not seen wild lettuce for myself to be able to tell the difference. I have read though that one really needs to be careful with wild lettuce as it can cause digestive problems so it needs to be used with caution. I know people do use it and it is helpful but until I learn more about it myself, I personally cannot recommend it. However, each person needs to do their own studies on that and find what works for them.

Love the yellow florets on the tall spike. and even wild lettuce too. Yellow blooms on a somewhat dandelion looking plant but it shoots up on stems..
      and a white tuft of seeds in same pod.

      @donnaleveron5711 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Here is a tip for you, 'dandelion' is derived from " dente de lion", french for tooth of the lion, because the leaves resemble sharp teeth. Also they flower early, so the yellow flower confirms it is dandelion. Also, wild lettuce will begin shooting up, gets tall, 3 feet approximately. Dandelions stay close to the ground. The leaves of dandelion are smooth on the top of the leaf.

    • @tinnerste2507
      @tinnerste2507 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      wild lettuce is paler green and has spikes all over it it looks like and is a short relative of thistle. the spikes are bendy, and dont hurt , the plant grows tall later in summer and looks very different at that time of the year. the leaf lobes are a bit rounded like an oak leaf streched long and a dandilions leaves are sharper lobed. aroune here mid june they are past the rosette stage and easy to spot in the weeds. they are full of latex compounds that very many people negativly react to !! dont swallow it unless youve touched a dot on your toung to see if it bothers you.

    I really love learning about herbs and what to do with them Heidi. Your amazing. I am growing herbs right now and its a learning process. like parsley one little seed is not enough it looks like it needs to grow in bunches am I right?? Do most herbs grow in bunches.

    they need a trellis to grow on?

      I have a hard time getting parsley to grow from seed for me but most herbs will bush out as they grow, especially if you continue to harvest some off as they are growing.
      Nasturtium does not need to be trellised but you can if you want. It may or may not climb it, it seems to just do and go wherever it wants. haha

I remember these plants having HUGE leaves and good stalks when I was a teen and she was caring for them, but before she moved from the farm she wasn't able to care for them so they were left to their own.
