Landscape Photography - SHOOT WHAT YOUR EYES SEE

- First video after a lengthy period of absence from TH-cam - This video was shot on a recent Landscape Photography trip to Tasmania in Australia. A day trip into a National Park to shoot waterfalls, encouraging me to 'Shoot what my eyes see", and trying to encourage you also, to 'Shoot what your eyes see". Train your eyes, and try and imagine your images, connecting both your shooting workflow, and also your post processing workflow all as one.
On Location North of Tasmania, shooting Russell and Horseshoe falls. with the Pentax 645Z, shot on the Canon M50, which both got soaking wet!
NO claim to copyright and associated sounds. Peaceful Day music and associated copyright belong to Peder B Hedland, Norway.

Really great to see you back once again Ewan... I guess you have finally finished renovating your house!
I like the way you walk the viewer through your actual thought process for each image plus the RAW images blending to the final ones. You haven’t lost your skill of storytelling and your talent as a photographer.
Once again great to see you back on this channel.... Mark

Glad to see you back after so long! 😄
Thanks very much. it has been a while indeed! Too long!! Regards, Ewan
Hi Ewan: It is so wonderful seeing your back on You Tube! I have truly missed hearing your messages and seeing your images. I really enjoyed hearing your message of "Shoot What Your Eyes See" as I feel that sometimes, photography is simply capturing/documenting a moment in time and hoping the photographer has been able to transmit the 'feeling' of what attracted you to pull the camera out in the first place. Anyway, great to see you back and I can't wait to hear and see more of your thoughts involving photography and life in general. Keep well. . . Cheers, Keith (Canada)
Hey Keith - Nailed it!!! Thats exactly what i was trying to get across and you have said it in a few short sentences. It took me 30minutes! LOL.
Ill be doing a few vids with this as a them in the months to come as i too think its really important, and in some ways... expands on the cryptic but clear message i had in the f11 master class video some time ago! Really appreciate the feedback Keith and hope you Are well in Canada! Regards, Ewan
Outstanding, so glad you are back. Love watching your work.
Many thanks Stuart. Really appreciate the support! Regards, Ewan
You asked us long time to wait! heheh Nice to see you back. Cant wait for more of your content.
Yeah, I did. Sorry it was soooo long! Thanks for being patient with me! Best wishes, Ewan
Good to see you back mate 👍
Cheers Steve - Appreciate it mate. Thanks for reaching out! Regards, Ewan
Great to see you back, it's been too long. Looking forward to the next one.
Many thanks. Ill see of i can get another one form Tassie. If not - then it will be back in NZ! = ) Regards, Ewan
Great to see u back! One of the best produced videos on you tube … just a calming approach mixed with the Orkney accent! One of my fave you tube channels is back 🎉🎉🎉
Why thank you. That is very kind. Good to be back too! Regards, Ewan

Welcome back Ewan!
Oh how i've longed for a new video from you!
And now there is it...and not New Zealand, but Australia! But again the same, familiar and calm voice and again you bring it to the point: "shoot what your eyes see" - very inspiring again and beautiful pictures to com out...
Thanks and see you in the next video...
Thanks Thomas. Really appreciate that mate! Good to be back and im pleased and appreciative for everyone's patience with me! Regards Ewan
Great video Ewan and lovely images

You're back, I hope you're well! It's midnight so I'm going to save this for first thing on a weekend morning with a coffee after the dog walk
LOL, sounds like a plan. Many thanks! Kindest regards, Ewan
Thank you Good Sir. Return of the distinguished Scotsman photographer-film maker from Orkney, who's fine video introduced me to Orkney, and it's neolithic settlement- Skara Brae.
Ahhh... thank you. Kind words indeed! Humbled. God to be back and maybe another from Orkney or Scotland at least in September... Kind regards
Welcome back and thanks 👍
You are welcome David, and no... Thank you! = ) Kind regards, Ewan
Lol, who imagined you could do such a good Aussie accent?!
Nice to finally see a new video from you, Ewan 😊
LOL, thanks Kerri. Nice to see you making a cameo appearance on the voice over in the intro! Apparently i put too many syllables in the "Australia", Shoulda been "Straya"
Great to have you back!
Thansk Claudio. Much appreciated. Good to be back too! Ewan
Man that intro is pure ED, boy you were missed bud and the flow and symmetry of those clouds over the ridge at the end! 😍
I giggled on the first look at the Big Camera with the nodal rail front and centre!
You challenge the accepted truth, I'm not believing that 🙂
Anyway, interesting falls, that first shot with the little mini fall near the centre/base 😍 both beautifully envisioned, captured and processed.
One little gripe, you know I would and you'll probably shoot me down but when you mention the FF equivalent for the aperture, you were speaking about the exposure and some might not get the equivalent is for the focal plane/depth of focus, not light. Off for my 3rd view now! (EDIT, after the 3rd view you did go on to check the focus but I'm certain most would think of the Ap relating to the light)
Great to see you back.
Hey Andrew. Really appreciate your feedback and many thanks for your multiple views! They always help = ) I had forgotten how big the camera and set up actually were! LOL
Now... brace yourself. With yourself being a MF shooter also - you have probably some some research on your comment re f stop. However... The lenses for MF and in particular your FUJINON glass for your GFX are massive, so that they can take in more light, allowing your 44/33 sensor to be satisfied as this by virtue of its larger size gathers more light. MF/ FF comparisons are not only for focal length, but also Fall off (DOF), as well as image quality and optimal optical performance - (f16/ f11 comparison) but also the need to choke down a little to control the light hitting the large 'light pockets' on your MF sensor. This can be well shown by shooting at any fixed reasonable ISO, at shutter speed priority to a 30%grey card and you will find the MF sensor will read slightly 'over' to the FF. Similar can be said for the comparisons between M4/3/ C size etc. Its called 'Equivalence' and is all based around the physics of light absorption capabilities across different sized sensors, in relation to the exposure triangle.
There is a bit of topic discussion going on in this matter over the last few years, but having run the comparisons - i know where i sit with it. (NB, the tests really have to be run in studio conditions).
Always appreciate your interaction Andrew and a great point to bring up on my first foray back into doing videos. Speak soon mate. Regards, Ewan = )
@@EwanDunsmuirImages Me do research, I just point the camera and hit the button on the top now and then :-)
Yes I looked up the DoF issue but I only shoot the Fuji so never looked into the comparison between different Sensor sizes relationship with light. That said with a new FF lens for more reach I better have a think or just go with the meter and see how it goes.
As already stated it's great to see you back and two weeks into a new Ben Horne series, life is good. Be well.
Hello so glad you're back . keep up all the good work you do
Thansk very much. I will try my very best! Regards, Ewan
Wonderful to have you back here Ewan and judging by the views, you have been missed by many others too. It's taken me a while to watch the video but not because I thought it would be run of the mill, quite the opposite. I knew it would be something I'd want to watch on the big screen where I could fully digest your sumptuous images and relax listening to your engaging narration. Please to see it was filmed in the style that I have come to love about your videos and are almost a hallmark. Hard to explain but it's there just like it is in your images. I only wish your choice of hat colour was matched to your taste in fine composition ☺
Hey Simon - wonderful to hear from you buddy. Many thanks for your kind comments as feedback form a master like yourself... is always humbling Always. I feel it was a little below par in production standards (as the next one will be) but ill bet back to a level i am comfortable with though. this implies there will be more content to come... which there will be = ) Thanks again for watching and your feedback Simon. We shall speak soon as ill be in Scotland next month!
Ewan
So good to see you back Ewan
Cheers david - good to be back too! = ) Regards, Ewan
Ewan!! You back!!!
Yup... and it feels great! Take care. Ewan
Awesome to see you back! I've taken inspiration from your "from the roadside" video and planning a road trip with the "big" camera in a week or two.... looking forward to your next video!
Hey there. Nice to hear from you. Thanks very much and i hope you enjoy some awesome conditions in the snow! Lucky! Regards, Ewan
Just managed to watch this for the second time, thank you, thank you, thank you for your insight. I went out last Saturday into North Yorkshire for the first time in months photographing Abbey's just enjoying being out, but got a little carried away , almost 600 images later the day was over. Just playing with different settings etc. Quite a number didn't work but it was great just being out and shooting for my first time in nine months. Thank you for the inspiration and getting me motivated.
Hey Paul, You are more than welcome my friend. Glad you got out and about too! Good fun huh!? Regards, Ewan
Welcome back. Great shots Ewan.

Thansk Michael. Appreciate it mate! Regards, Ewan
@@EwanDunsmuirImages Funny thing was that 2 days ago I was cleaning out some of the channels that I've subscribed where they haven't posted in months and came across yours. I ended up rewatching a couple of your older ones and thought how nice it would be to see you return and left yours on the list. I learn a little something from every one of your videos. Thanks again.
Thats awespme @@MichaelCantwell . Really appreciate it! E
Great to see you back, we've missed your photos and vision of the natural landscape. Hope to see many more.
Hey David - Many thanks indeed. Ill start working on the second Tasmania one soon, which is a little different (and quieter) than this one! Regards - Ewan
Welcome back Ewan, your story telling and descriptive thought process is brilliant as are your images. Looking foward to more from you.
Morning john - many thanks. I dont really have a story board before i start and just cobble it all together along the way unscripted! Not sure if thats a good or a bad plan of attack. LOL Kind regards, Ewan
New subscriber here. Thanks for the series of videos that you're doing. I very much appreciate the gentle pace and the thoughts behind your compositions.
Many thanks my friend. Thanks for your comment and feedback! Ewan

It is so good to see you again! From all the comments it’s evident that a lot of us missed you, man! Cheerio!
Thanks very much, and thanks too for your patience. Its great to be back and some more coming form... Tasmania, USA and Scotland hopefully in the next few months, as well as NZ! Kind regards. Ewan
Great to see you back, have missed your gentle and considered style. Tassie has many great photo opportunities so I look forward to see what you discover. You haven’t lost your touch the images are beautiful.
Thank you very much indeed. Good to be back on here! Regards, Ewan
Absolutely delighted to see you back on the small screen Ewan. I have so missed your wonderful videos, your calm, instructive, informative voice and your beautiful images. I will be in Tasmania next year for 3 months (March, April, May) and will be going to those falls, so, no doubt your voice and instruction will be ringing in my ears when I am there. Thank You for another awesome video and the inspiration. Looking forward to seeing more.
Thanks very much Andrew - I too have missed doing them! Tassie is a wonderful place, but i reckon you need to get over to NZ. maybe come on a shoot with me! Appreciate your ongoing support and kind words. Regards, Ewan
@@EwanDunsmuirImages I do need to get over to NZ for sure, and if I do, you can count on me getting in touch.
Welcome back! After such a long absence you return with anther enjoyable, engaging and well communicated video and a set of beautifully considered and constructed images. I'm looking forward to your next one.
Thanks Tony - great to be back with one in the bag. Ive just been looking over the footage form the next location. Hope i have enough b roll, to make sense of something! Regards, Ewan
Hope our paths cross one day. I live just up the road and we live in a magnificent country and the BOP is a buetiful part of our country.
Thanks Stuart. Maybe we have met before and just dont know it!?... Regards, Ewan
Delighted to see you back behind & in front of the camera Ewan !👏🏻
Love the images and your description of how you captured the scene.
I photographed those locations about 12 years ago, & agree it’s not easy to work with the vegetation & high flow of water.
I’d love to go back & give it another try. Tasmania is a special place, hope you had a great time👍🏻
Thanks Phil. Great to be back too. It sure is a cool place. Just didnt have enough time there! Thanks for your long time support. Regards, Ewan
Absolutely wonderful that you are healthy and that you are back.
I missed you and your amazing videos really. All the best for you and greetings from Black Forest, Germany.
Hey Karl. Many thanks for your kind comments all the way over in Germany. The internet is an awesome place huh!? Ill be back with more content over the coming weeks and months as well! Best wishes! Regards, Ewan
Hey Ewan
Amazing how well all that visualisation and ability to execute came together in two stunning images. Such skill. Good to see that you can come back after a layoff and knock it out of the park!
So good to see you back and look forward to your next video.
Hey Bob - many thanks my friend. Ill get back to the point i was at a couple of years ago in a couple of vids i hope! Thanks for reaching out! Ewan
I was wondering just last week what happened to you, it's so great to see you back love your videos & photos you've been missed. Welcome back & and welcome to Oz. Cheers 🍻
HI there.. Many thanks indeed. Sorry I was away for so long! Back now though! Used to live in Melbourne, but has been years since i was over there properly. Tassie is actually quite beautiful! Regards, Ewan
@EwanDunsmuirImages hi mate sorry for the late reply I've been sick for 2 weeks. You said you lived in Melbourne but I've not seen any photos from Victoria do you have any from GOR or 12 Apostles, The Grampians, etc? Also Tassie is beautiful I was there in January. Cheers
Hey@@herx2429 . Thats all good. I used to ive in the fothils of the dandenongs n the north east suburbs, but alas - that was when i was shooting commercial contractual work and back in the day with 35mm film. Whilst i have old actual photos, none of them digitised im afraid. The light down at the 12 apostles though, is just stunning! Thanks for your interaction . Hope you are feeling better. Regards, Ewan
@@EwanDunsmuirImages Yeah feeling much better thank you. It would be great to see you photograph the 12 Apostles and surrounding area one day, for now looking forward to your next video. Cheers
It’s been far too long waiting to see you back Ewan, but worth it 😉 gorgeous images and you explaining what you are trying to achieve before showing the results, it’s a skill that takes years but as you say it’s like riding a bike, once you have it it tends to stay with you forever 🤞I’m not there yet but getting better. I can’t go anywhere without looking for an image, however mundane the surroundings and if ever there was a good bit of advice it would be “always look behind you” 👍
Hey Garry.
Great having you back Ewan! Another very interesting and helpful video, thanks. Was interesting to see that you just did a two shot panno, no focus stacking on the rocks etc and just kept it really simple, exactly the way i like taking photos. White border around your images at the end also made them pop more so i'm going to try giving that a bash too. Got a trip to Wales coming up soon so will seek out some waterfalls to give it a try. Looking forward to your next video.
Thanks very much Chris. Ill do a vid on my work flow at some point but the white canvas is a trademark of having 'finished' with the image and to desist me form wanting to go back and mess around more with it. Sometimes... simple is best!
Regards, Ewan
@@EwanDunsmuirImages excellent, I’d find that really useful to see. I feel I’m guilty of being too lazy in my edits, quickly do something in Lightroom adjustments in a minute or two, export, post, done, rather than spending quality time. Already thinking about just re-importing everything into a nee catalogue and starting to go through them very slowly and pull out some images to work on.
Nice to meet u Ewan😊
I'm Jay!24:01
Nice video ❤❤
Ahhh, Jay and Wen - NIce to meet you to. Would love to see the images you got on the X2D! Would lpve to see a file. You could send to ewan@ewandunsmuirimages.com
That would be awesome!. Regards, Ewan
Welcome back! Bush sounds at the very beginning got me confused: "Hey, that sounds like Australia, not NZ!"
haaaa... LOL - it would have confused indeed. Much different to nz huh!? Ewan
Welcome back
Thank you very much! Ewan
Great Video Ewan, (welcome back), I hate wet subjects, it doesn't matter how weather sealed my gear is i hate it! I question sharing RAW images, i tend to think RAW images as negatives in the old dark room mantra! both are brilliant images, not surprises there 28:27 almost monochromatic 28:50 fantastic, it's interesting I have been wondering where the photographers i have followed in the past have gone (including you) now i know we are all struggling with TH-cam and this media, thanks for sharing
Hey Tony - thanks for your patience and continued support. I dont like shooting in dampness either as i am not good at the aftercare! Many thanks on your feedback re the images, and i dont mind sharing the RAW files as this is a 1080P 8 bit of the original file, and i do this with the Pentax files (which i simply love) to show just how flat they are and to show how well they can be manipulated. I know what you mean though. (Id struggle to send a RAW file electronically) Kindest regards, Ewan
Just beautiful. Thank you. Has it really been 18 months since the last video?! I hope you're ok
Hello there. Thanks . Yes... i think it avtually has. Time flies unfortunately. Im all good. My best wishes to you too!
Hello so glad you're back . keep up all the good work you do

Great to see you back👍
Thanks very much. Good to be back! = ) Ewan
