Though still thought of as a job for mostly men, more and more women are choosing police work. The Austin Police Department (APD) currently has about 171 female officers serving in various ranks, which make up approximately 10 percent of the total police force of 1,700 sworn officers. APD serves a diverse community of more than 800,000 people. The department is looking to recruit women -- and men -- who can handle the rigorous physical and mental challenges of the eight-month long academy and being a police officer.
