That was a beautiful sumigaeshi executed by Swain for entry into newaza. Swain is one the best, a technically excellent judo player.

Nice too see judo with newaza and without so many damn penalties...also letting the fighters fight and defend without stopping the action to call a penalty..was it really necessary to change this type of judo into what we have now..tbh judo of 2021 is getting better than what judo was 10+yrs ago

I think guys like Swain and Pedro will take Judo to the next level in the US. Maybe they'll train the first American gold medalist. At the very least the first one will be influence by their techniques and theories.
Two talented Judoka in Mike Swain and Jimmy Pedro.

I did not know that we had a champion like this. It is unfortunate that we have no depth in Judo. We need a rich businessman to create a foundation to pay for our US Kodokan where we can train Judoka from an early age, then we will win some gold.

2:45 should have been ippon, but i'm glad it wasn't because i got to see some nice newaza. too bad refs don't allow that much time for newaza anymore.

@JohnRaymondWilliams We live in a celebrity culture and the audience want to see the big gun throws. Newaza is subtle and complex and is often hidden. The Brazilians may change this. Also the Japanese think that concentrating on newaza reduces speed by a few 1/100ths of a second for throwing techniques. Who knows?
