I've been listening to these boys since late goodbye was being chopped to shitt by the janitor in Max Payne 2. And then the piano version and then the actual song during the end credits. And I was hooked I needed to know who the hell these guys were. I've had a lot of ups and downs in my life. Three tours in Afghanistan. I've seen a lot of people died. I had a heinous drug addiction when I came back and found out I had no family to come home to. And the music of poets of the Fall has been there for a little under half of my life. And I'm not too much of a man to tell anybody that a lot of their music has had me in tears. Nobody sounds like these guys do. Nobody. Keeping up with his tone vocally is very difficult. Now regarding this song... I believe the album version of this aka the original.. is a song of victory. This one however.. is not. This is a song of defeat. It's the differences in the music and how he speaks the words. Humor me and listen to both of them. You'll see what I mean.

Everyone's talking about Marko (and rightfully so), but I think that Olli deserves some recognition on this one too. Dude was nailing it. It didn't even feel like there were any instruments missing from this song.
I know this comment is probably late as hell, and nobody's probably going to see it. I've never played the Allen Wake games. But I can still relate to this song in some way. I've been fighting schizophrenia and mental illness for the last 10 years. And I've been convinced I've been fighting alone, but every time my mind tells me that I'm alone I am reminded by my friends and family that they are right beside me. I bought that game because of this song. Still haven't been able to get through it mind you, but the point is this song was good enough on its own to make me buy a game.
Dynamics! An important resource Olli and Marko use in this version that most musicians neglect nowadays. From 3:31 to 4:08 they soften tehir playing/singing and bring the volume down, specially Olli. Then at 4:08 they hit the notes very hard to fulfill the space that the band and drums do in the original version, to bring this "crescendo" atmosphere. The details make SO much diference in music, most musicians are so used to just hit the notes in a constant level and forget about output dynamics which, for me, is the most beautiful resource in musical execution.

Oh hell yes! I first heard poets of the Fall when Max Payne 2 was released. Heard the janitor humming and singing it and then later in the game blew the head off of a guy playing the song on a piano and then at the end of the game during the credits we got to hear the song they're very first studio recording called late goodbye. I've been listening to these guys since the beginning. And I believe that if you ever want to recommend these guys to anybody just refer them to the Alexander theater sessions album. It's kind of like a greatest hits album filmed live well not live necessarily only rephrase that... Filmed in a very old theater in Helsinki Finland. They are on the stage it is beautifully done 100% acoustical and there's nobody in the crowd. And from beginning to end it tells a story if you're really paying attention and you know the history of the band. Very powerful very powerful. Alan Wake was fucking amazing! Just like all the DLC that came out after it. What a mind fuck of a game. I literally had dreams about that game when I started playing it. And that one part when the song war comes on in that old garage I mean goddamn! What an epic fight scene! Check this out All right so the song known as war the studio album version the version that's in the video game Alan Wake that is a song about victory it's about success and conquering and acknowledging somebody else being there with you. Now go listen to the Alexander theater sessions version of it. It is no longer a song of conquering or success. Oh hell no. That version is a song of defeat. It's the same lyrics but it is sound much differently. If you have never seen it or heard it humor me listen to the album version and then go right to the Alexander theater session version. You'll see what I mean. Music is a universal language and it is incredibly powerful. It really is. I've been listening to these guys since the beginning. I have been in a few bands we have played all over New England and we do a lot of poets of the fall songs. I'm not tone deaf I'm a pretty good vocalist while I'm playing a guitar I mean I'm not the best by any means and I certainly am not nearly as good as Marko. But by God I try.

Thank you so much for your music, it's so pure, relaxing and just make you feel in a different context, it's one of those things that makes you feel happy. Your sound is amazing, amazing atmosphere in your presentations, all the instruments sound amazing, and my most sincere respects to Marko, one of the most controlled voices that I have ever listened to, and I love a lot of other great singers, but you are so great, for me at least. 2 or 3 months ago I did not know you, now your are probably my favorite band and one of my dreams is to see you live! First time I hear this amazing song, was in Alan Wake. Now it's like another time and place. The place is the same, but the time feels like much, much more than ten years ago... Like events in 2009 was closer today. Still, I miss that time for other reasons too. But the past is the past. And years later after Alan Wake, I got my first album of Poets Of The Fall (once again, as I never heard of them before, until this song), and so far I have all the albums today. Ah memories😅
Marko's voice is a pure jewel on this melody, feeling such a warm melancholy, I love it so much, thanks, best birthday gift for me… (one day in advance) and Olli's guitar is so present so alive, thanks to you guys

This is the song that got me into this band. Heard it on the little radio in Alan wake. Went back and stood there and listened a couple more times then looked them up. Old gods of asguard baby!

Oh hell yes! I first heard poets of the Fall when Max Payne 2 was released. Heard the janitor humming and singing it and then later in the game blew the head off of a guy playing the song on a piano and then at the end of the game during the credits we got to hear the song they're very first studio recording called late goodbye. I've been listening to these guys since the beginning.
And I believe that if you ever want to recommend these guys to anybody just refer them to the Alexander theater sessions album. It's kind of like a greatest hits album filmed live well not live necessarily only rephrase that... Filmed in a very old theater in Helsinki Finland. They are on the stage it is beautifully done 100% acoustical and there's nobody in the crowd.
And from beginning to end it tells a story if you're really paying attention and you know the history of the band.

Alan Wake was fucking amazing! Just like all the DLC that came out after it. What a mind fuck of a game. I literally had dreams about that game when I started playing it. And that one part when the song war comes on in that old garage I mean goddamn! What an epic fight scene!
Check this out All right so the song known as war the studio album version the version that's in the video game Alan Wake that is a song about victory it's about success and conquering and acknowledging somebody else being there with you.
Now go listen to the Alexander theater sessions version of it. It is no longer a song of conquering or success. Oh hell no. That version is a song of defeat.
It's the same lyrics but it is sound much differently. If you have never seen it or heard it humor me listen to the album version and then go right to the Alexander theater session version. You'll see what I mean.
Music is a universal language and it is incredibly powerful. It really is.
I've been listening to these guys since the beginning. I have been in a few bands we have played all over New England and we do a lot of poets of the fall songs. I'm not tone deaf I'm a pretty good vocalist while I'm playing a guitar I mean I'm not the best by any means and I certainly am not nearly as good as Marko.
But by God I try.

Hello guys, to be honest I don't know how I met you at all, but sincerely it's the best thing that have happened to me so far in this year and in a long time.
Thank you so much for your music, it's so pure, relaxing and just make you feel in a different context, it's one of those things that makes you feel happy.
Your sound is amazing, amazing atmosphere in your presentations, all the instruments sound amazing, and my most sincere respects to Marko, one of the most controlled voices that I have ever listened to, and I love a lot of other great singers, but you are so great, for me at least.
2 or 3 months ago I did not know you, now your are probably my favorite band and one of my dreams is to see you live! Keep doing what you are doing and touching so many hearts in this world that lacks of real love, thing that doesn't happen with your music.

First time I hear this amazing song, was in Alan Wake. Now it's like another time and place. The place is the same, but the time feels like much, much more than ten years ago... Like events in 2009 was closer today.
Still, I miss that time for other reasons too. But the past is the past. And years later after Alan Wake, I got my first album of Poets Of The Fall (once again, as I never heard of them before, until this song), and so far I have all the albums today. Ah memories😅
