    Been playing 20 years. Started as an adult and this video fixed 90% of my scale problems. No tension. Cannot believe it. Thanks Josh. Neither of my teachers helped me this much. You helped me in 5 minutes.

    My teacher taught me this method, it was no doubt the absolute best method I have learned to practice scales, and modes, and all forms of patterns and arpeggios.

      interesting points ,if anyone else trying to find out learning how to play piano quickly try Nadazma Simple Piano Helper ( search on google ) ? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my neighbor got amazing success with it.

    Hi Josh, one question: when you play (one beat x note, one beat x two notes, one beat x three notes and one beat x four notes) are you mentally counting ? Because I go out of synch when I play at higher speed...Thank you very much. Bye, Roberto.

    Are scales muscle memory or are you actively trying to play them?

      I would say you actively try to play them when you first learn them, but they naturally become muscle memory afterwards.

    pls help me i have a problem when i play with my both hands and once i recorded it playing c major scale..and when i slowed down the tempo it was sounding horrible like left hand first then right hand it doesnt sound together..and it happens to me every time i check it.pls suggest me what to do?

      Try this, start slowly then build up your speed (it becomes much more natural with a bit of time and patience), accent every two notes so play like this CdEfGaBcB...C (Capitals are accented) until that's comfortable, then do three: CdeFgaBcbA...c then 4: CdefGabcB...C and so on, i hope that helps :)

    When I play scales at a faster speed, I have a problem with the clarity of each note rather than speed. Sometimes I couldn't hear two notes separately, especially when it comes to third and fourth fingers of the right hand. Do you think this method can fix my issue?

      slow and continuous pactice of Liszts exercises book one will make each individual finger fast on its own and scales will increase as a result. its not the passing of the thumb thats the problem since that only happens twice per octave. sliding the hand as opposed to passing the thumb under and raising the wrist will also increase the speed. practice say in c major just landing your thumb on the c and f without passing under and without the notes in between. also just plain regular scales with displaced accents will clear up any clarity problems. example, putting the accent on the 2nd 3rd and 4th note of the sixteenth,(a bit like the last bars of the first 5 exercises of Liszts book 1. displaced accents is an excellent control drill you can use in your etudes also. rotate the accents each run. when you can control where the accents go perfectly, then your hand will never make any unwanted noise again.

      Timon Phong Tran ... practice with rhythm 1 & 2 on the beat. Will solve your problem on scales. Base on watching my childrens while they are practicing scales.
      Josh Wright has taught about practice with rhythm in many of his tutorial.

    I've just realized that this exercise also trains you to be able to play faster but also harder, because when you practice at 60bpm 1 note per click you play 120bpm at mf and 240bom at p, but by the time you'll reach 120bpm 1 note per click you'll play 120bpm at f and 240 at mf!
    That's amazing if you ask me

    Nice video Josh! Thank you. Another question for the people in the comments: When using a metronome, am i the only one that 'hates' the metronome sound with a very tonal sound instead of a percussive sound? For me the tone interferes with the music cos it will be off key most of times...

    Hi Josh. What’s the significance of numbers like 144 or 192 bpm? Reason I ask is because I go in increments of 5 like 85,90,95,100,105,110 bpm etc. and never thought the numbers in between are that important for scales practise (unless mentioned on music pieces). Is it because higher speeds are possible to increment by 1 bpm instead of 5?

    My problem is that I get a little bit out of sync with my left hand. I don't really know what to do about that, other than practice slowly, which I already did.

      play thinking with your left and let the right hand follow the left. make the left louder even. do that for a month.

      +babis dupakos The fingering depends on the scale you play. There are scales you want to start with the 2nd or 3rd finger. You can google "scales fingering for piano" and you will get some great results!

      For a C major scale you use:
      1 2 3 1 2 3 4 5
      c d e f g a b c
      If you want to do 2 or more consecutive scales:
      1 2 3 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 ...
      c d e f g a b c d e f g a b ... and so on! :]
