    Hawkers have to submit monthly rental bids during NEA’s monthly tender exercises to secure a stall there, Stalls are awarded to the highest bidder.

    Mr Seetoh criticised the practice of bidding for hawkers to secure a stall in the hawker centre, arguing that the government should do away with it and offer fair rentals and give it to the most deserving hawkers. My opinion exactly get rid of the bidding system

    “Some of the stalls listed moved here from coffee shops. They believe that hawker centre vendors enjoy government subsidies during the epidemic, so it is more secure to set up stalls in hawker centres. ”

    Healthy means eating whole natural foods, not all those highly processed junk that the body doesn't know how to handle and instead storing them as fat.

    It was only in the 80s, where we had a larger population with greater spending power, that hawker food seemed in comparison to be cheaper. Dining was concentrated amongst hawker food due to the lack of full-service restaurants.

    Get rid of the bidding process la, ” said Makansutra founder Kf Seetoh, in response to the recent news report on vacant stalls in the bustling Amoy Street Food Centre.

    Thank you very much for this insightful installment. Healthy options seem to be a bit different and less healthy from what I recall of hawker stalls way back in the 80's 90's an early 2000's, and more like what you would find in food-courts in America, were fresh and healthy food options seem to be systematically forced out my high-profit, low quality mono-choice options that offer lot's of artificial tastes, , ingredients such as synthetic sugars, MSG and toxic additives to maximize consumption and trigger hunger after consuming.
    Americans are have become so psychologically conditioned, to believe what is killing them is "Healthy", and hope Singagopre is not reached that point now, but I noticed in your video many people appear over-weight and less healthy and energetic than I remember of Singaporeans.
    Frying meats vegetables and whole grains inflammatory processed seed oils, then smothering it in more inflammatory seed oils, sugar, trans-fats and salt is of-course the opposite of eating healthy, and I applaud you for opening the door to public awareness and hope you will do more to open the eyes of Singaporeans and and the world as to the extent local and the Global Industrial Food Complex are damaging our health, and helping us to feel good about it.

      You are asking for trouble if you eat American style food. If Singapore are smart, she will limit such foreign influence on our food.

      @@narnooshho8296 My point was that the Singaporean Hawker food in substance and effect, seems little different than American style food. I.E.: "Fried meats, vegetables and whole grains in inflammatory processed seed oils (and possibly Palm oil?), then smothering it in more inflammatory seed oils, sugar, trans-fats and salt". And while the hawker food 'Style' may appear different, is it any different, than the fried foods people in the American "Heart Attack and Cancer belt" of Southern America States eat?

      I agree and it's why diabetes and heart disease will likely become a major health issue in the near-future, not just in Singapore but across Asia.

    • @narnooshho8296
      @narnooshho8296 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @jackoneil3933 Exactly. It's getting closer and closer to American style food as businesses struggle to cut costs to stay afloat.

      @@narnooshho8296 Are food prices increasing Singapore do to actual cost, devaluation of the currency or shift in how and what people are eating, and/or an American style growing monopolization and globalization by an industrial food complex?
      When I lived in Japan, Malaysia and Singapore back in the last Century, In Japan like most Japanese most of my meals were at home, and when I did eat out options were pretty healthy, and in Japan I felt more healthy and energetic than I ever did in the U.S.
      However, in Malaysia (In Penang at least), as well as Singapore it seemed many or most people dined out much or most of the time as it was cheaper and easier than cooking. However, for me, eating all the fried foods, salt, oils and spices started nearly every day, I began to feel the effects. Today if hawker and restaurant food is less healthy, it's not hard to imagine why people's health is going the way of American's health.
      What I'm observing and documenting in the U.S. is local producers being bought out or forced out and with that, a decline in choices, huge increases in prices, and no matter where you shop Health food stores or Walmart, it's the same processed poison, and even in the Northwest of the U.S. where we used to be the nation's #1 producer of vegetables and fruits, last spring to fall, it was nearly impossible to find locally produced produce, with most coming from Mexico or thousands of miles away, that was of almost inedible quality and 3X the price of what locally produced. as it had to trucked stored and distributed over a period of weeks. Dairy and eggs are often produced states away weeks or even months previously at much higher cost.
      With Singapore having to import most of it's food could something like what is at play in America also becoming a factor in Singapore?

    Eating healthy is expensive. If you look worldwide, Singapore included, most obese people eat the cheaper food options available, which most of the times contain a lot of carbs, sodium and fat.

    Many of these young hawkers closed their stalls after a few months, due to a high starting rent and being unable to generate enough income to make ends meet.

    We cannot blindly support this gov like some of these people are telling us to

  • @martinmisty866
    @martinmisty866 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Another reason for the exit of these hawkers is that many former coffee shop vendors overbid on their rental prices and were unable to sustain their stalls in the long run.

    Expectations of cheap hawker food both by consumers and the State is nothing new. What is new, however, is the doubling down that our current government is doing into our hopelessly flawed and unsustainable model of providing affordability of food.

    Thanks for this video Straits Times, because it reflects how hard it is for consumers who want to eat healthy (or for those who are unwell) and stay focused on that journey. Its understandable that F&B businesses sell more meats, fried and enticing foods to attract the general customers and generate good income. But I think the mindset somewhere has to change. Healthy food options can still be very tasty and attractive. Having fully "healthy-themed" coffeeshops and food courts (outside of medical institutions) might be the way to go....its just logical to do so if we wanna go down this road. We can have all the health ads encouraging us to take action, but honestly, look around, its not that practical. How about we start a new lifestyle trend :)
