The situation you described you said it was fictional, however happened to me twice in my career and my actions were exactly the same, so I guess there’s just no other correct and professional way of addressing the situation, it’s just a common sense 😅 Typically those individuals they know they are tough to work with, and they feel people don’t like them. So the least thing you want to do is to show your disrespect. Ideally, as you said, try to establish a personal connection with this person to melt the ice while at the same time staying professional and performing your duties well and boom everything will be just fine
