Unusual 'chain' lock

  • Tim came across this unusual cylinder lock and key at a recent puzzle party, and was pleased to be able to buy one for his collection.
    The lock does not seem particularly unusual, at least externally, but the key is definitely different - it does not look like a key at all. In fact, the straight section of metal has the key hiding inside, and it is - unusually - a totally flexible key. By itself it is too flexible to be inserted into the lock. But if you insert it into the lock, contained within the metal outer casing, you can then slide the plastic handle forwards, and the flexible key will be inserted into the lock.
    The flexible key does have a traditional key shape to it, and there must be the traditional pins inside the lock for it to engage with. But because the key is flexible it means that the path that it takes as it is inserted into the lock is not straight. Presumably this increases the security of the lock.

    Key goes in at an "S" shape, almost, to prevent someone from picking the lock. Seen some videos of professional lock pickers unable to pick it. Pretty neat invention for sure :)

    Apparently this simple looking lock will defeat most locksmiths as the key doesnt go in straight and so it is difficult to line the pins and tumblers up at the far end of the lock without the specialised 'bendy' key.
    Indeed some locksmiths are even reluctant to dismantle the whole thing as it is full of springs which are difficult to reassemble by hand.

    Grand Illusions The gear lever lock on one of my cars back in 1993 used this type of key. It's not unheard of. The advantage is it makes key duplicating very challenging due to the difficulty in holding the key still. Our tumbler wasn't wiggly, just straight; therefore this doesn't circumvent lock picking, only key copying.

    I have a very peculiar key, and I don't know how it works. It's a small metal bar, and when you push it against the side of the lock with a groove (no moving parts, all solid), you can pull the lock open!

    Why would this be any different than picking any other normal lock? The way a normal lock is picked is by rubbing the pins inside the mechanism hence why a key has rugged edges, to stimulate the pins. This key/lock doesn't take that factor away what so ever so the process remains unchanged.

      +Kudo the chamber is zig-zag shaped

    • @GatheringGuru
      @GatheringGuru 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jade because the actual pins are arranged in a left-right zig zag within; a straight key (or lockpick) wouldn't actually be able to fit all the way to the back. To reiterate, the zig zag is left right, not up down; if it were up-down it could certainly be picked by a normal lockpick

  • @Keekoook

    The idea of the key is to hide the profile on the teeth. As this gives lockpicks a good idea of the type of lock they will need to pick.

    • @ShonkyLegs

      The issue is the keyhole bends like an S on the inside, keeping the rear pins away from your pick.

    • @kmlkmljkl

      ShonkyLegs
      And then someone makes an S-pick. Boom.

    • @ShonkyLegs
      @ShonkyLegs 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      kmlkmljkl While I am sure you can pick this lock with enough effort, as you can with nearly any; I'm not sure I can imagine this S pick you're describing. I'm pretty sure that you can't insert an S into another S.
      If it was a single curve, that would be easier to get around, but without a flexible pick (Which would basically be useless for applying tension on the pins) I don't see how you could get to the back of an S.
      I've never seen any picks or rakes that are this shape, but if you could show me one, that would be cool. I can't imagine it though.

    • @MexieMex
      @MexieMex 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ShonkyLegs I've never had the chance to examine one of these locks, so can't claim anything other than assumption, but the the curve looks very shallow (by how bendy the key is) so getting to the back of the 'S' shouldn't be a major problem. Would love to have a play with one.

  • @squirrelbong
    @squirrelbong 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    seems kind of like a novelty, I don't see this making the lock anymore secure. I guess it could be helpful in keeping the key's cut a secret...so it couldn't be 'stolen' just by looking at the cut on the key and reproducing it...but that sort of sheath could be added to any normal key.

    • @TarisRedwing
      @TarisRedwing 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +squirrelbong The key is wiggly like that for a reason. It's not because it's just a novelty thing the key barrel were the key is inserted is actually not straight and is zig-zagged left and right inside the lock. So a normal straight key can't actually fit in it. it makes this lock almost impossible to pick by any normal means.
