I wouldn’t get too worried about the balance of what you are reviewing as long as the flow of ukuleles continue-and you have always kept an eye out for new models making a splash. I feel as if there is a little bit of a recession in the ukulele market, and the only brands bringing out models with a “splash” are Kanile’a (innovation) and Flight. I sometimes wish that I lived somewhere closer to top-notch dealers so I could review some of those models! The only negative for this model, for me, is the “standard” Kanile’a tuners. I have a suspicion they are made for Kanile’a by Grover, and are excellent-but at the price point (list price of $2695), I would think that Gotoh UPTs would be included. I would bet that you could order one direct from Kanile’a with those. As always, excellent review, and what a wonderful example of what maple can do for a ukulele!
Yeah, know what you mean - but it'd add Kala and Ohana in the mix. The Kala Contours and Revelators are a bit of a splash, and the Ohana custom shop has been a nice addition (see review next week.... shhhhhh!)
i was eager to hear you play it; Kanile'a never disappoints when it comes to tone. It must certainly check your "woody/warm tenor uke" box. I expected it to be a bit pricey, but it came in cheaper than I expected. Kanile'a produced several videos in the past couple of years on these technical innovations that the current models have. While line is outside my price range, I value Kanile'a's R&D and product development. It must be the most advanced producer of modern ukuleles, and that makes an excellent review subject. Excellent review.
I just adore flame maple. The back and sides remind me of a high end 🎻 violin. And the tone, it’s delightful. But those stain colors…..nope, it’s gaudy. I couldn’t play it onstage. Had it been stained a “normal” color, it’d make me drool. Happy World Ukulele Day, Baz.
I guess choices are good - they do a flamed maple in ghost grey, and the custom shop have done plain maple and seafoam green too. I get not everyone will like this though, but you can get others.
Shame they don't make a baritone in this model.....😮Doh! Comes very well deservedly recommended by you and of course Alex Beds. If id not already bought my klos is be on this like a ton of bricks, or if I can manage to sell some of my smaller ukes I may still be tempted. Thanks for another great review my friend ❤
Great review as always. Beautiful look and great sound. Unfortunately I am not a fan of sound ports - I guess I could plug it if they make a cover for it.
I have already evaluated Kanilea for myself. Good to know how it sounds with low G. But, if then for me in concert size and in solid wood. Koa for instance. Thanks for the interesting review.
Hi Baz, that sounds absolutely gorgeous. I love a low G Tenor and that sound is simply sublime. Regarding the colour, I don't mind it at all. It would definitely stand out in a crowd that's for sure. I kinda wish it wasn't glossed though and was satin. As you would say, that is subjective. What a lovely, lovely instrument. Way out of my league price wise but hats off to anybody who can! Thanks for another great review. Can tell you loved doing that one.
Oooh, love the staining, such a warm summery feeling. Then you played it and it is, as expected, clearly a pinnacle of Ukulele innovation and quality, which shone through. Nice Uke, I would just need 6 numbers to come in and my playing to be far better. Great review and thanks for the run through, have a great week.
Thank you for the great review! I bought one last year, not because of the looks, but because of the amazing sound samples I kept hearing. It didn’t disappoint. It’s sounds absolutely incredible. I’m still neutral on the looks, but, for me, the it’s sound is what matters and that is killer. I saw Alex from SUS with a beautiful green one lately. I know there is another less colorful version as well, if you love the sound but not the coloring (and can afford the steep price tag). Thanks!
Not been tempted by this model before (and I love a bit of uke-bling) but your review model seems to have a wider range of colouring than the ones I have seen, going through to that deep cherry red. Lovely!
Gorgeous uke! I don’t hate the colours but my personal preference would be a solid blue uke if I’m going for a colour. Lucky you to be able to play it and review! I bet you’ll be sad to send it back.
For aesthetics it's hard to beat maple. I suspect one of these in their traditional color would look fantastic also, maybe better? Out of curiosity I hope they do one.
I play an Illikai Part of me regrets buying it for how much I spent! But the biggest part of me has never been happier about playing a Uke! It’s beautiful isn’t it?
I used to have a Flight 10th Anniversary maple and eventually gave it away because it was too bright. The Kanilea maple is much warmer but i still prefer their koa versions. I wish i could have gotten a mango uke when they were making them. I think i saw that Alex at SUS got some Olis. I have one and love it- hope maybe that's yoyr review for next week.??
I had the Flight Anniversary Maple but sold it; didn't really care for the sound. This sounds much warmer, closer to my L.Luther Le koa. Probably even better live.
Haha, "regular human territory"! Knowing the horizon thing re the colors is pretty cool. Sounds great! Happy National Ukulele Day, everyone! Buy yourself another uke.
A pleasure to look at and listen to. It must also be a pleasure to play. Well out of my league of course, but it’s nice to know such things exist. Thanks for the review and for giving me something to gawp at.
It sounds beautiful that's sustained thanks for letting me know the next one will be expensive I won't watch that one I'm sure it will be a brilliant review all the best
Without question a very beautyful ukulele with a stunning sound, but for that prize range I expect a car, a house and a bottle of xo brandy in the goodie bag...
Wish they had saved money by choosing a single color. And while flaming adds bling, a uniform and tightly grained top is generally preferable in terms of tone. That said, this sounds nicely resonant. Matters not; I am out of ukulele money for the foreseeable future!
Another enjoyable and informative review. To me though this multicolored Kanile'a uke sounds lovely but unfortunately it looks like a child's toy guitar and not a serious instrument. 🤷
When I was a youngster I had it drummed into me the importance of getting the best tools you could afford. Any discrepancies are then down to you and thus must be improved upon by you, the craftsman. Every time I play my Kanile'a Concerts I think exactly what you said, they deserve better than me, because they are superb. I've said before that I don't like artificial colours on an Ukulele and on a masterbuilt instrument like this it's a travesty. It's tantamount to ridiculing the instrument and we get enough of that from detractors as it is. I know it's subjective, I know some will crave it but NO , I don't even like sol id body Guitar copy Ukes. Sounds beautiful though. Ohh and if I hadn't bought my first one as a pristine but pre owned K1C I wouldn't have been able to afford two, not on my pension and at my standard of proficiency I certainly don't warrant this standard of instrument. I do have the Tee shirt that states that I play it because I like it, not because I'm good at it though. If they ever make one in Honey colour Maple i will covet it though. 🤔🙄
"I don't deserve to play this": yeah you do, shut that imposter syndrome down, Baz! This one does sound gorgeous, it's way beyond may pay grade. Happy that something like this exists in the world.
I'm getting the hint you may like the colour, Barry? Yep, it's definitely an excellent instrument but that colour scheme has given me a migraine. Not my cup of tea. Sorry.
I absolutely love it 😍 Massively out of my price range, but who cares, it was a joy to watch you review it.
Thanks for watching!
I think it’s a beautiful uke. I love different and high craftsmanship. This has it in spades. I’d be proud to own and play this one.
Me too!

Yep - very clever builder always looking at innovations - and they sound great!
The word that came to mind was "musical". It responded with clarity, warmth and great accuracy throughout so yes, one for the professionals.
It's certainly that!

Good choice Mark!
Kanile'a called me. They said, Thank Baz for the review and tell him he can keep that one. 😁
Ha ha!
(I mean... Kahiau... if you are watching..... )
Not for me due to colors and price. But a nice tenor. The multi color thing is often found on low budget ukes. Just an odd marketing choice tbh.
I love it
Absolute quality Barry many thanks for reviewing
My pleasure!
@@GotAUkulelebet it will be hard to send back Barry
@@richardsnow7299 Tell me about it! Worst part of doing these!!
Not been tempted by this model before (and I love a bit of uke-bling) but your review model seems to have a wider range of colouring than the ones I have seen, going through to that deep cherry red. Lovely!
Yeah - the variation on this is splendid!
Best Maple I've heard!
I'd agree!

The worst part of doing this is the sending back!
I picked the concert up from the SUS stand in Cheltenham last year and when I held it against me and strummed, the universe thrummed through me.
Amazing aren't they?
Wow.That is beautiful.
For aesthetics it's hard to beat maple. I suspect one of these in their traditional color would look fantastic also, maybe better? Out of curiosity I hope they do one.
There is a black / grey one, and Alex at SUS came back from Hawaii with a seafoam green one (a custom I think)
What a thing of beauty.... Both in looks & sound. Well beyond my means and playing ability, though. Thanks for another great review.
My pleasure!
I didn't go for it until you pointed out the "sunset" imagery. It''s cute! Not for me, ultimately, but nice.
Yeah, nice theme to it
Dream😍
indeed!
I play an Illikai

Certainly the territory my bank balance is in!
Wow, the sound is so round, crisp, and beautiful. I'm impressed with the look too... but less amazed by the price. 😅
Lot of work in this!
Do sunglasses come in the gig bag 😂😂😂
At 2 and a half grand them sunglasses better be Oakleys 😂😂😂
Is this the same one as Phil from SUS owns? Sounds gorgeous.
I believe so

Thanks for the review and for giving me something to gawp at.

@ PS, Southern Ukulele Store, if you’re reading this, please give Baz a Kanile’a Oha to review.
Actually not a bad looking uke. It looks like it was designed around the Warming Stripes. 😄
That's right you did say you where going to look at cheaper instruments and perhaps a little less colourful would be nice (tacky)
I didn't say i'd look ONLY at cheaper ukes, just that i'd try and redress the balance

They are doing a range Tom - some in single colours - choices...
Nothing wrong with the tone here though!
When you're strumming., they'll see you coming. 😀

The maple is nice. The color scheme is not my thing. The sound says it all. Kanile'a quality. Perhaps Kanile'a will expand the color scheme's?
I believe that is exactly what they are doing
