The VL1 was great, but the EX-5 took those sounds to a whole new level. Still nothing like it decades later. And where is the Wavestation? Another brilliant, unique instrument.
Great series of videos! I still own my JD-800, Nord Lead 1 and Korg Prophecy. Each of those synths are special. I like the fact that you covered a time when musicians were opening back up to the idea that "analog" (albeit virtual) cannot be beat. Also, those "virtual analogs" were very complex little machines...The Korg Prophecy is a very powerful little synth. And, of course, the JD-800 sounds crystal clear. I like my "real" analogs too. Thanks for this series!
No, and yes. Funny that the AI sounds on the M1 sounded fresh but the "improved" AI2 sounds on the X3 sound without dynamic expression. Combi mode though is much more flexible than any of the presented synths here. And midi implementation is better than on the M1.
Hey. Good that someone replied, even four years later. I have worked on an X3 for several years. I can also confirm what you said. However, I've always maintained that it's all up to the musician who can deal with the instrument itself so to work a good deal of a sound that's worth the effort. And to me the X3 provides a good range of resources that turn out helpful, very helpful. Thanks again for your feedback, dude. 🙂

I'll take the CLAVIA DMI Nord Lead / Roland JD-800 / KORG Prophecy / KAWAI K5000S / YAMAHA VL1 / YAMAHA SY99, and open to anything else ugly collecting dust, and especially looking for terrible sounding synths like the Kawai K4. I could definitely use another.

Yes but only a handfull of vp1 synths was ever produced. I just wish that it was mass produced.

The sounds chosen as examples for the Prophecy were the most boring and uncharacteristic ones you could find.
Yep. The Prophecy board in my Trinity Plus can come up with better preset sounds.

I disagree... But I do think the 90's was not the best decade for synthesizers. Yet, Roland and Nord Lead made a few terrific ones this decade.
