    Now y'all understand all the thumb jokes Brandon and Donut make (Getting "Scotted" has become synonymous with a gun blowing up in the Gun community now). Scott being their friend, and being good humored about it, loves playing into those jokes.
    In fact, during the Gun Meme Review Brandon did after the accident, Brandon actually started feeling a little bad doing the memes and jokes and called Scott in the middle of the recording session to ask if it was okay to keep doing the jokes; to which Scott said, "Absolutely. Been loving these memes and they've been helping keep my spirits up" (To paraphrase).

    If I recall correctly, Scott gave a much lower number than the real critical pressure of the RN-50. Mark Serbu said on his YT channel that the pressure that it would take to destroy that rifle like that is in excess of 150k PSI, and Scott did another video in a much safer manner, testing the critical failure level of the rifle, confirming that number from Serbu.
    The SLAP round that nearly killed him might as well have been a stick of dynamite.

    • @legendaryjimbob7685
      @legendaryjimbob7685 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yeah he did give quite bit lower one, considering the bullet that he had made for recreating it(ofc safely, knowing it might explode) was created to cause over 190k PSI, so yeah most likely just forgot to say 1 at the start there as in 185k PSI. I doubt he would have made like over 50k PSI stronger round for it. Edit: In his video where he recreated the incident, he says the he said that it took about 180k PSI to blow the gun the way it did, so most likely forgot the 1 from the start, which is fine, atleast it would only serve as warning for people to not use ammo that can create over 100k PSI

  • @gfr237
    @gfr237 ปีที่แล้ว +293

    He said in a later video that he believes that the rounds were loaded with the wrong type of powder and probably way too freaking much too. The lesson here is be careful with old/reloaded ammo, especially with something as powerful as .50bmg. Scott's a good guy, glad he made it, his accident is still one of the crazier things I've seen on youtube

    • @Razgriz85

      @@Razgriz85 First thought: Why round big? Use bettur powder, make cartridge smoller
      Second thought: Different powder mixes probably have different results. With the diameter bore you've got, you'll want to fill the tube, not just whack the round like with a smaller tube.
      Now to find a metaphor... Viscosity! Like trying to drive a train through a tunnel filled with water instead of air. Crunch goes the metal can.

    • @ShaggyRogers1
      @ShaggyRogers1 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@JoshSweetvale The big difference between handgun rated gunpowder and rifle grade is that rifles are meant to have longer barrels. Rifle gunpowder is meant to be able to burn more slowly over the length of the barrel for the more consistent burn. Handgun powder is meant to burn up within the short handgun barrel, so it is a fast burning powder. It makes sense that if you are going to get a pressure issue like that, it would be from way too much handgun powder.

    You should react to the follow on video where Scott destroys another RN-50 on purpose to see just how much over pressure it had to be to explode the way it did. Video title: "My 50 Cal Exploded...Again"
    Mark Serbu, the manufacturer, did a series explaining his investigation and attempts to replicate it, if I remember correctly he was estimating the chamber pressure to be something like 300-350K psi, as mentioned regular operating pressure for .50BMG would be more like 55K psi.

    The legitimate medical reason he lived , even jamming a thumb and his dad driving like a bat out of hell, it really was just because he is a massive muscular man and just had more blood he could lose. Any lesser man would have actually just bled out.

    • @The_Keeper
      @The_Keeper ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Indeed.
      Hell, a man his size but with lesser cardio health would probably have bled out too.
      Honestly, I think what really pushed him over the edge to survival, was keeping his heart-rate as low as possible.
      And even still, with that amount of bloodloss, he should have passed out according to medical knowledge. I mean those "5-6 units of blood" he mentions seem to be directly taken from Metric.
      An adult male contains 4-6 liters of blood, and if you lose 2 liters, your ass is almost guaranteed to be on the floor. He lost 4.

    Scott actually sent that very rifle back to the manufacturer and they completely rebuilt it for him. He's still shooting the gun that almost killed him to this very day, and on top of that occasionally still puts somewhat sketchy rounds through it, albeit in a lead sled because he's never risking that mess happening again. I think that just goes to show his character and how, despite very nearly being the instrument of his demise, he's never once blamed the weapon or its designer for what was a freak accident due to a bad round.

  • @BearInThaWoods

    He did another video after he was all healed up where he intentionally blew up another Serbu .50 under safer, controlled conditions. He used the last of the slap ammo and found out that almost all of it was loaded way too hot but none of them caused the rifle to catastrophically fail, then he loaded a .50 BMG round that he had intentionally made waaaaaaay too hot and it exploded almost exactly the same way.
    That spawned a bunch of videos where he would intentionally explode various guns by loading rounds that were way too hot. He had a running gag where when he would load the round and unsafe the gun, he'd splice in a clip of an explosion from a movie.

    • @ShaggyRogers1
      @ShaggyRogers1 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It was reloaded ammo, which was the problem. The person who loaded the rounds loaded it with a very very large amount of handgun rated gunpowder. Handgun powder burns much faster than rifle powder, so the pressure became an issue in the gun. This is what happens when you purchase ammo that you don't actually know the history of. Only use reloaded ammunition that comes from a known trusted reloader. Old ammo and gun show "surplus" ammo has the chance of being a sketchy reload, so be wary.
      Shooting new manufactured ammunition is safe. Shooting ammunition from a known trusted reloader can be safe, assuming said reloader doesn't make a mistake like using the wrong powder....

    • @charlesmayberry2825
      @charlesmayberry2825 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ShaggyRogers1 These kind of mistakes usually are the result of a reloader that is doing multiple calibers and has multiple powders open on the bench. This is why you always only have one on the bench, when you're done with those rounds you put it back. then set up, get the powder for the next. it could have also been someone that didn't know better. I've reloaded ammo my whole life, my father and grandfather taught us to keep things very tidy and very procedural to prevent exactly that kind of mix up.

    The investigation by Scott and Serbu found that the rounds were likely counterfeit or tampered using pistol powders instead of rifle powders. Pistol powders burn extremely hot and have a lot more pressure, basically the last round turned the rifle into a bomb

    My dad once had a gun blow up in his arms. He still has shrapnel in him but it’s harmless now, thankfully it wasn’t a .50 bmg it was just a garand unfortunately it was a nice rifle and it happened on April first so when he called home my grandmother answered and thought he was joking until he sent a picture of his bloody arms and chest he made a full recovery but I can’t even imagine what it would be like if it was any bigger a round.

    The crap Mark Serbu got over this from less-intelligent people who "know" something about guns was ridiculous. The gun is a solid, simple design and had been well-tested. This was a round that was tampered with and fantastically beyond normal pressures. Scott went on to test a replacement gun with the remaining rounds he had purchased and all but two of them showed signs of excessive pressures, though none of them enough to blow the gun up. He finally fired off a round that had a known calculated excessive pressure, suspected of being close to what nearly killed him. The gun blew up in almost the same exact way.
    Bad ammo, plain and simple. He's rebounded with more enthusiasm than before and has broken past that lingering fear he had from it.

    The pressure that this .50 fires at is around 50k psi, the MAX it could theoretically withstand is around 80.
    The estimated psi of the faulty round that was fired was around 185k psi.

    As bad as this whole situation was, at least Scott made it out and he's still making vids + the memes that came from this were pretty damn good.
    Brandon Herrera (the AK Guy and Scott's good friend) made an "Emergency Gun Meme Review" on this and the memes, and he talked a bit more on what could have caused it, etc.
    I highly recommend you watch that too cause that's one of the best Gun Meme Reviews so far imo.

    I was watching this late at night it made me start to feel queasy, I try to make my my down stairs and I faint for a second or two almost just tumbling down the stairs, and my parents heard me thud against the floor. They had to drag me downstairs cover me in ice packs to call me down. Because at this point I can barely stand I feel like I’ll pass out and I’m cold sweating up a storm. After this they have to put me in a cold shower cause I just wasn’t getting better then after nearly an hour of just sitting in the shower I start to get better, I’m all fine now.
    TLDR the video made me sick I almost passed out down the stairs and had generally awful time.

    A few months ago, Mark Serbu himself confirmed that the reason why this happened was the wrong type of powder. During testing with other RN-50's at the Serbu plant, they managed to replicate the effects by putting pistol powder into a .50 BMG casing.
