Chukotka's Struggle To Preserve Its Whale-Hunting Livelihood

  • Arctic Survival (2004): Without whale meat, the people of Chukotka risk starvation. They're angry that the IWC will only let them hunt by traditional methods.
For downloads and more information visit www.journeyman....
The Russian region of Chukotka is one of the most isolated places in the world. In winter, the average temperature is --30ºc and people survive on less than $10 a month. They depend on whale meat as their main food source. "If they prohibit us from getting this meat, we will simply die out," states one local. But the International Whaling Commission will only allow them to hunt if they use traditional methods like hand thrown harpoons. And that's a ruling the hunters believe is placing them in danger. "The grey whale is dangerous and very aggressive when hunted," states official Valentin Ilyashenko. The walrus skin boats they're meant to use fall apart too easily and whales are too heavy to drag ashore by hand. Hunters are frustrated that people with no understanding of their lifestyle can have such a large impact on their lives.

It is so good to learn of other cultures, and not judge them. but learn what their history is about and how they have lived for ages.. They have a right to their way of life, just as any other group of peoples. it would be so nice to see these kinds of videos on regular tv instead of the trash that the corporate media decides to shove down our throats, So I have stopped watching tv. This video is fascinating and I truly appreciate the filming and posting of it. Its like meeting a new friend :-)

This is absolute BS, for someone who lives with food from every corner of there communities, as we do, don't even think about telling then that what they're doing is wrong. It's all of us who created commercial fishing, and over harvesting, not these people. Generations before them have lived this way to SURVIVE, and so should they. Sure its awful to see such an amazing and majestic animal being hunted, but I bet if you go into some of these Chukotka homes and see all the kids running around that are depended on the nutrients from these hunts to SURVIVE, you'd say they where even more important.

what will they do when there will be no whale anymore and in addition, if whales could not play their role in the biodiversity with Phytoplankton O2 (di-Oxygen producer) and so, at around 2050 life on Earth will begin to suffocate? we now observe that there are hypoxic zones (Oxygen deficiency in water..) because of extensive whaling... You should much better read the conclusions of scientists and wonder why I is crucial to have more whales, and why 89 Countries banned whaling since 1986. Oceans are dying, and now Oxygen coming from Oceans are more than 60% in the atmosphere as now Forests are shrinking...the end of time in this scheme will be at around 2050 ...

Its obvious that the IWC in restricting the manner in which the Whale is hunted to traditional means as a way of limiting the numbers caught each season. I think they are quite fearful that by allowing mechanized hunting they could decimate the whale population in that particular region.

People need to let them use more equipment, that is crazy, to just use old ways, besides they dont do it for the sames reasons as the Japanese, just to eat something expensive, they do it because otherwise they wont be able to feed their families

Cool story bro, but the Chukchi were enemies of the Inuit and Inupiak. They didn't defect because they had their own land. Inuit and Inupiak were kicked out of Russia by a rival tribe basically. This rivalry lasted a long time, check out alaskan reindeer project.

Yeah chukchi raided for captives the islands in the sea between alaska and probably raided the alaskan coast .. They were far more warlike than their cousins. You can see old 19th century inages of chukchi wearing full body armour from bone and hide armed with powerful recurve bows and other weapons. Their settlements were fortified and the russians put some effort into subduing them and restricing their raiding.. captives were kept as trophies.. Status symbols.. The chukchi had steel and iron although the probably only traded for it with the sakha and evenki who made it. Their warfare was much more skillful than the alaskan natives and russian accounts have described both the chukchi used slings bows and darts with bodyarnor and had several distibct sheild types some which attavhedvto their armor. It was not a passive culture or one of smaller settlements like the eskimo.. But one of fortified earthen forts more like the aleutians or the coastal canadian natives

Well, I live in Russia and really enjoyed this video. Even if it was shot in over part of Russia it really seems for me like another part of world, like if I was watching images of Australia. So fascinating. I really hope that those people's problems will get solved. Also, I was very impressed to see that local people still maintain their traditional way of life.

    • @manateestation5442
      @manateestation5442 2 ปีที่แล้ว

They don't consider themselves Russian. They separate themselves from Russia in every aspect of their lives. You can hear it in their statements about Russian meat. It's not "our meat" or "meat from elsewhere in the country", they say "Russian meat" then deliberately state "If you eat our frozen food" when referring to their own whale meat... They don't want to maintain their traditional way of life, they feel it's keeping them down. Did you even watch the video? They want industrial whaling fleets, that's the whole point of the video.

    • @manchagojohnsonmanchago6367

@@manateestation5442 naar they dont its not like canada or the us with extreme resentment.. They live with the russians side by side, yes unlike north america most still speak their native languages, they are give chances in russian society to manage affairs of their society.. Not as inferior children like north america but as equals.. Thats why they retained their language and customs better.. Also many russians in isolated places dont live much worse thsn these guys when this footage was taken. The big issue was these natives during the ussr transitioned to wage labour, government jobs, mining, fishing ect when the ussr fell everything evaporated, those people probably once had decent wages by soviet standards jobs.

Why does everyone point fingers at someone else? No one country is to blame more than anyone else! WE* are all to blame.
Instead, why not use our compassion for these and other people to UNITE us together.... Together, WE (* world entities) can do something about injustice all over the world!
If I can help in some way, please let me know.

also imprisoned in a financial trap.Any money that is earned a vast percentage of it goes straight into the government pockets never to be seen again. Not only is it a pain in the arse losing over 30% of wages before you get it,but anything you should buy with that money is subject to tax from 20%-4/500%.On top of all this you have to pay your local council vast amounts each year for the miniscule services they supply. It makes working a pointless exercise as you never get to enjoy your "income".
