I saw her perform in Dallas and she was fantastic! She has a beautiful voice and charisma. Thank you Stephen Colbert for featuring our Palestinian QUEEN.
I watched this "live" last night, and it brought me to tears. In the past seven months, for the first time in my life, I have seen Palestinian and other Arab-Americans proudly display aspects of their culture and not have it received as a joke by anyone except the right-wing, who hate anything that is "different" anyway. At one point she even ululates, and it wasn't laughed at. It was a beautiful moment. For most of my life, Arab culture (which is not a monolith) has either been played off for laughs, or depicted as something primordially evil, mysterious even. I grew up on action movies where the main villain was either a Russian communist, or an Arab terrorist. I watched "news" reports depicting the Arab "world" as monolithically bad. Calling those countries its own "world" served to Otherize them. "They" are not like "us", you see. My first Muslim friend was a Palestinian-American whose grandparents lost their homes to Israeli theft. He once told me to never bring up the topic of Israel to Arabs unless they were already talking about it, because it is a very sensitive subject. At the time, I thought that advice was a bit extreme, but after over 20 years of seeing what happens to Palestinians from the comfort of my own home in America, I "get it" to some degree. If even that is too much for me to handle, I can't imagine how it must feel to be in the situation myself, and have that be my entire life for decades. There are some people that I follow on Twitter who plead with their subscribers to "never stop talking about Palestine", and say that it's the least we can do. I respect that forwardness, which feels like another sea change, as the other side of the "terrorist coin" is the depiction and expectation of Arab subservience to Western power. These people are not begging for crumbs. Their voices will be heard no matter how much Israel and its allies try to snuff them out.
I never thought I would see the day where people were supporting Palestinians. It’s so fucking surreal. People proudly wearing the keffiyah in public, people using Arabic words, seeing non Arabs dancing dabke…. It all takes my breath away and moves me to tears sometimes.
