  • Even today, Tuberculosis remains to be the second leading infectious killer after Covid-19 (Source: WHO), and ending this epidemic by 2030 is one of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. In 2021, TB killed 1.6 million people, making it the 13th leading cause of death worldwide. These alarming statistics are despite the fact that TB is both preventable and curable.
The Infectious Diseases Group at Amrita School of Nanosciences and Molecular Medicine conducts extensive research on finding an effective curative solution against TB through the development of advanced drug delivery systems. In today’s podcast, Dr. Vivek, who is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Group at ASNSMM, talks about his research on the ‘Development of Targeted Drug Delivery Systems to enhance the efficacy of Tuberculosis’. One of the highlights of the research was that the team were able to reduce the side-effects of the anti-Tuberculosis drugs through a Targeted drug delivery directly into the TB affected macrophages with the help of protein coated nano particles loaded with the anti-TB drugs.
