I respect a man who said he got slam on the table. Most men won't tell that part so I belive what he is saying is true
Real t
I met Shawn in Melbourne Australia 04 I believe? and asked him "what happened to Mike" Shawn answered my question with great respect to Mike and said "Mike is where he wants to be and has left the group but will always remain a part of Boyz ii men"
I'm paraphrasing a bit but after hearing what happened for real from Shawn in this video I have even more respect for him as my question would have still probably been somewhat raw with them.
Such a gentleman and honour to have met him all those years ago.
Respect
I am a HUGE Boyz II Men fan and ALWAYS will be. I miss Michael "Bass" Mc Cary, but Shawn makes a valid point. You can NOT be bigger than the group and show up when you want to. As a brother, as a member of the group it is your responsibility to talk with them and let the guys know what is going on with you. If you don't work, you don't eat. I pray in the near future ALL four members will be back on stage together as they should be.
Given that now we know Mike had MS, everything makes a lot more sense now. Mike was probably going HM through a lot, and keeping it a secret, so of course from the band's perspective it just looks like he being lazy or didn't care etc.
exactly. not to mention the legal aspect to it, when a person contracts the group and only gets 3 members that puts the band in a bad situation... you cant be a part of a group and falter on your obligations
He was sick... Not acting bigger than the group, being diagnosed with MS, you can't do a lot, and I'm pretty sure he was going through a lot of pain.
I like the way Shawn used to tell that story... "Mike proceeded to whip my @$$"😂
Scoliosis and MS is crazy, he must have been in so much pain and depressed af
Nobody can replace Mike.
Mike replaced Mike with "NO MIKE" on his mic.
This was a business decision. He messed up his own money.
Can't tolerate in a business situation what you would never tolerate in a family situation.
PERIOD!!!
That’s why they didn’t
Nonsense. Mike was the least essential member. He was not a main vocalist and never led any of their songs. All he did was talk and sing the bottom note in harmonies. They could have easily brought in someone else to fill that slot. Boyz II Men is a four-man group and they should have kept it that way. A trio just doesn't look right. They need all the members to keep the balance.
After all these years I finally heard the reasons behind Mike's departure, I never knew this, all the best to him and the group
@@luv4ever101 nope, never watched her show
@@luv4ever101 wow, I need to find that interview
He has MS, not scoliosis. That’s why he couldn’t do it
The lack of communication is obviously a problem, but I just don’t think he understands how chronic pain changes a person - it makes you depressed, irritable, unfocused, possibly hooked on painkillers (not saying he is/was), etc., and you may not act rationally or be considerate of other people. You would think that with maturity, they would become more understanding and look at it from his perspective…but I would also think that he’d realize that hairstyle was ridiculous, so I guess not.
This was a business decision. He messed his up his own money.
Can't tolerate in business what you would let go of in a family situation.
If Mike could talk to his Doctors, then he should have talked to his brothers.
Ain't that much understanding in the world. Mike's grown.
People no matter how understanding cannot force you to talk.
While Mike's not talking, B2M has a business to run. They have families that are depending on them, as well as fans that they have to be loyal to.
They can't afford to mess up their money because of what Mike did.
Mike allowed his mental, emotional, and personal situation get in the way of business and his family.
Mike got what he deserved!
If he could show up for the "payday", then he should've been able to answer phone calls.
@@tyronewitherssr.5828 I will admit that I would have probably made the same decision B2M did for my emotional state of mind trying to run a business and support a family. However, your comments about Mike being grown, messing up his own money, and deserving what he got is unwarranted. Chronic pain can be debilitating and change a person as @Brynne Holt mentioned. Hopefully, you or a close friend will never have to experience that situation.
Personal experience changes perspectives and brings humility.
@@0xTRellyx0 Mike had a lot of money to get as much help as he could possibly get. Plus he had this the support of his professional Brothers who were his friends and brothers before they made it big.
My statement stands and it is warranted. Perspectives are dime a dozen and they change every day. Prospective so not the authority to change the principle.
I've been through a similar situation and I will say frankly and unapologetically no one has the right regardless of their situation to make decisions and to act in a manner to destroy the livelihood of other people. Mike's decisions greatly affected the lives of the people that he work with.
He messed up his money you can't show up to work when you want to and then come back hoping that from a business standpoint your partners are going to stand for that. That's not the real world. The real world doesn't care about your perspective when they have to take care of business.
Coming to work only when he can see that there's a big payday when the days and weeks prior to he was a no-show, in the real world you would have got fired already.
Mike is lucky that they didn't get rid of him prior to. And the fact of the matter is that Shawn from the group made it clear that Mike decided to get physical and put his hands on his own brother so Mike deserved what he got.
Get your affairs in order and communicate like you're supposed to and maybe the outcome would be different.
PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!
@@0xTRellyx0 one more point, Mike at a certain point dismissed the whole idea of humility. If he had humility he would have thought about that considering the support that he had even before they decided to fire him from the group.
Humility takes 100% accountability for what you are guilty of. If you don't want to do that that you don't deserve the blessings that you get.
Grateful to hear this conversation. Good they respected him by not bashing him. But they did understand that this can't be about 1 person in a group.
Mike has Multiple Sclerosis ( not Scoliosis) which can impair one's mobility and mental state with brain fog. The back problems are common because many Multiple Sclerosis patients experience extremely painful Sciatica and Pantar Fascitis. As a matter of fact, many patients are misdiagnosed because doctors never look for Multiple Sclerosis which can be more deadly in men than in women.
He actually had both
NO PROBLEM at all...but considering all this info, this is why he needed to say something to them so that his condition could have been considered. so that when the time came they would know how to accommodate him. it's a clear case of no communication
To be fair to Mike, his condition was much worse than he told the group. But also he never told them that. So he is at fault for not explaining and working it out.
I Agree
He didn't tell his then wife either 😔😔 hopefully, He understands their n his wife position.
I think it was entirely too painful for him to open up.
I read people with his condition are mentally damaged.
Both sides are wrong in how they handled things.
I just wish they would make peace with each other even if doesn’t involve
Michael coming back to the group.
@@jaylene.turner6524 in making peace tho, Mike has to understand that he can't just come back and get a ¼ of the pie. And that's why he didn't come back for the 20th anniversary. He wanted a ¼, the fellas said no(as they should have)...so he decided not to. It basically boiled down to, they did all the work when it came to writing songs and writing his parts for him and him wanting equal money. Nate basically wrote all of his parts and showed him how he wanted it sang. I think he only wrote one song(which he sang one of the lead parts) and that was all. The song "You Know" on the II album.

People often confuse the term "no love lost." It does not mean you love someone and you still love them. It actually means two people dislike eah other and since there was never any love to begin with, then there is no love lost.
Many blessings to Boys-II-Men!!! We love you Shawn and thank you for providing clarification on the matter.
He was sick.. but communication is key
He didn't disclose how he sick he was..... COMMUNICATION IS KEY
You can see and feel the loss of Mike affected the group to this day. They just wasn't the same. They started out with five. Marc Nelson of AZ YET was part of Boyz II Men also.
Marc joins them on occasion, I took my girl to see them in Vegas and he was a surprise performer
That's absolutely not true. Mike never wrote any music so his contribution was not that significant. Boyz 2 Men just like any other RnB act(s) were affected by the rise of Hiphop.
@@ndujamzAnd that their egos started getting in the way and pissed off a lot of people. People like Baby Face, Kim Burris, etc.
5:22 Speaking of a 4th member WOULDN'T it make sense to reinstate MARC NELSON since he was an actual original & founding member.
well as a lupus patient who lives in constant pain at some point the mental pain surpasses the physical pain and you become mean and angry especially to those who are closest to you, ik im dealing with that and no matter how i swear to my self that my children and my husband did not wish this disease upon me and in that respect for as supportive as they are they don't deserve my nastiness. i'm not sure if Mike was dealing with that and took it out on his "brothers "
I think not adding someone else was a good moove. It kept it real, authentic, even if we all miss his voice in the harmonies.
I watched the whispers documentary and was amazed at how they took care of certain members financially even when they were not able to perform. There the only group i ever heard do that... Saying he's my brother and treating him like a brother is two different things.
I saw the Whisper unsung as well, and was amazed how they continue to take care of each other after missing shows, even after one did time in jail. That’s what you called brothers! I totally agree with you. Shawn saying one thing but not doing nothing for his brother. Always two sides, I would like to hear Mike side.
How are you supposed to support someone who doesn’t pick up the phone? Zero communication. Cashapp and Zelle didn’t exist those days

I appreciate this conversation. There was a time where I was mad because the four was no more, but this conversation sheds more light...wish the group and Mike the best
@@luv4ever101 I am aware of all of this that is why I was mad. there is even a post where I called them out on it a few years back in m comments. I appreciate this dialogue because it is the most honest in light of Mike's condition....I still wish it was the 4 but I also understand brand and business and Mike's unique situation too and I saw the Iyanla interview that shed additional light...This is the 1st time I am content with the way things are as a fan
Having a heavy voice myself, Mike was the alpha in the group to me. Anything in life starts with a foundation, and he was that...he was the glue that held the harmony down...especially when Nate sang lead! I'm glad they didn't replace him. It would've been the equivalent of trying to replace a Melvin Franklin, you just can't do it!!

I'm probably the biggest BIIM fan ever and Mike is missed and it is kinda hard to replace a true bass (he wasn't just a bass singer he also talks with deep bass) at the same time Mike brought it on himself by being dishonest and not being straight up about his condition. For years we all thought it was scoliosis and to have to find out it is Multiple Sclerosis after his appearance on Iyanla Fix My Life about 6 years ago was shocking. But as Shawn said he will forever be a part of the Boyz II Men fraternity and I actually hope in due time in some kind of way he rejoins the fellas at least for recording new material even if he can't perform. As a fan I would even settle for that.
While I do understand Shawn's stance I think it's pretty assholish of him that he keeps dismissing Mike's illness as a simple back problem knowing he has a Whole autoimmune disease.
Michael, however is at fault for not communicating with the guys about his illness. Then again i know how it is to battle depression aswell and how it can cause you to withdraw yourself and just suffer in silence but still and all communication is key especially considering he had stopped coming to rehearsals and shows that's bad for business so i don't fault them for making the business decision to let him go
I do holdout hope that they'll all make amends with each other and reunite even if it's just for one performance
I never get tired of hearing Fuzzy say "his back wasn't hurting that day ' LOL
I was laughing my ass off, like
"Well shit, I guess you ain't in too much pain if you did that!"
I went to your concert, if Michael is there I would pay extra to have him there
I would’ve like to hear more people that was considered to be asked into the group. He said Brian, if he’s talking about Brian McKnight that would’ve been awesome especially for the shows
I love Boyz 2 Men....sorry to hear about Mike, but I'm a forever fan and I'm cool with the 3 of y'all!!!🥰💙
I don’t think there is any group ever who could sing better than Boyz 2 Men. Each of them had their strengths and their harmonies would sound so good it’s crazy.
After 7 would give them a run for their money though. 😁
New Edition, come on
Temptations… 4 Tops … The Spinners.. the list goes on and on
Accapella is completely different than accompanied musicians.
I wish Mike could have seen the bigger picture and did what he needed to do to stay in the group and get money. I can imagine it's hard to admit something is wrong but do what you gotta do to keep the income 😂.

They’re working on it.

Most definitely....said that when new edition movie came out.

So glad he broke it down like this.
I didn't care much for their music growing up, but it was such a part of growing up in the 90s that when I hear them now, a million forgotten memories come back to me. And Ir ealize, LIke them or not, they arer a huge part of my life.
Was it to pop for you
I agree that most people would not like to see am original member replaced...ESPECIALLY after creating so many hits together. However, you cannot maintain the same sound (vocal harmony) without that bass. With that said, I would have loved for B2M to give themselves a chance to maintain that sound by recruiting Kenny Terry from Az Yet. That dude has range from tenor to bass! Again...no guarantees...just a chance.
THAT part right there! I always bought their cd’s BUT after Mike left they’re music wasn’t the same. I always thought it was because of song choice. I never really thought about how the balance if voice’s wasn’t the same.
Kenny Terry is absolutely a strong pick but may not want to play Mike's roll in the group. Kenny was probably #1B in AZ Yet. Being uuuuh ahhh in B2M as #4 may have been a tough pill.
Nath has been playing Mike's role ever since he left especially in studio recording but one can notice on-stage performance, and it sure doesn't sound the same, I mean the 4 vocal sound which B2M is known for, however, so far he's doing a nice job, they ones performed with Marc Nelson of Az yet one of the original members.
I second this! Kenny Terry would be perfect!
the band clearly lacks a fourth member taking care of the bass voice. That’s just my opinion but it rounds off the sound.
I can agree. Nate has a good bass but he's not as good as Mike.
Interesante
I agree They should feature Mike's vocals in concert or recruit another bass singer
I am happy that people are understanding that sometimes your antics is not good for the group and the fans want the best. This is what Otis Williams of the Temptations had to deal with. He often said, "no one person is bigger than the group." That is why today it is still The Temptations and not The Temptations featuring..... Where Otis was dragged and hated, I like that people are understanding why Michael had to go. His heart wasn't in it anyway.
I would definitely welcome a 4th member! Their music is definitely better with someone singing bass, especially for the a cappella stuff.
How do you invite Shawn Stockman on your show and not know Mike is a bass?
And this is why Boys 2 men can sell out a staduim today. 1. They care about their fans 2. They stayed true to who they are and the music. They understood there is always a lane for good music.
Why did Michael McCrary not want to tell the members of the group that he had MS? I just saw Iyanla’s Fix My Life. Multiple Schlerosis is a devastating disease.
I just want them to shock the world, hook up back together for the Culture Tour 2 with Jodeci, Charlie Wilson and New Edition and take over for 2023 or 2024! Peace!
He said Mike back wasn't hurt that day😂😂😂😂

It seemed like people were losing interest in boys II men long before Mike left. I know I was one of them. The talent never went away, they just didn’t seem very interesting anymore, starting with that Evolution album. The content in their music didn’t hold up to what was on the radio going into the 2000s. Not that there is anything wrong with their music, their core audience just moved on after that second album.
Their 4th album is dope

I don’t like hear them talking about each other in front of outsiders🤷🏽♀️
After hearing some of the stories about how the other guys in the group really were behind the scenes, I don't totally trust Shawn's recollection of events. It's a version of the truth situation. The actual truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
But I did see Mike and Wanya met up at a show recently, so if Shawn and Mike are still beefing and not speaking, Wanya and Mike seem to be cool.
Its true what shawn said," brothers fight" but the only thing he didnt say "that brothers always try to keep the family together, know matter what, life is to short, Shawn should know that him self "forgive and forget"
Healing takes times.
But brothers dont always try to keep the family together...that wouldnt've been a true statement

I gotta say big salute to Boyz II Men for even consulting the fans. And the fans made the right choice. I’ve always said Boyz II Men were the closest thing to the Temptations. Only difference is Boyz II Men stayed brothers the whole time, Temptations was more business than anything. Otherwise I’m sure fans back then would’ve preferred to keep the classic 5 Temptations than making several changes to the group over the years.

But having headaches like I used to have I was thinking it's out of your control when you feel sick you don't have the Zeal to do anything when you're feeling good you can do it they got to think about sickness part ...when you're sick do you want anybody bothering you..... or do you just want to feel better😢
He kept it real that Mike was putting that hand work on him
One of my favorite r and b groups next to ( 112, jagged edge, Jodeci, dru hill, )
Boyz to Men just brought Mike up on stage at their Las Vegas show. Last week it was also the 30th Anniversary of their second album. Mike came up on stage he hugged Nathan. In that moment you could see the hurt and brokenness that was in Nate's face. Now although he showed some emotions their. Here's the truth behind that Nathan, Shawn, Wanya were all just caught up into the moment. They have not spoken to Mike in years. They have done interviews just like this one. Putting Mike down saying all kinds of things about him. Yet they love to hollering about he's their brother. Well I am going to be totally honest siblings do have disagreements and even fall out. However whatever they may go through. They shouldn't bring it to the public's attention. If its something that has transpired it should have been kept between all of them. Instead of involving everyone in their business. Each time since Mike has been brought up and questions have been thrown out there. They should have respectfully said that we are not discussing that. Or it's not up for discussion at all. Move on along in the interview. Instead they chose the wrong move due to their anger and hurt. They chose to speak about it. When they should have just waited to the right time to discuss and handle things behind close doors. The right time would have come along eventually. No they have choose to go this route. Now it's causing more problems. Especially Shawn stating things the way he did at the show. As for Nathan he has a mountain of pain hurt rejections. That he has never dealt with he does his best to be happy but its hurt and buried in grief from the losses he's suffered over the years. From their manager Khalil Roundtree, to his mother, father and so much more. Wanya hides behind laughs and jokes. He has so much that he's dealing with. That the only way he can make it through it. Is by singing dance and clowning on stage. Shawn just doesn't know what to say or do. He jumps to the plate to address things. Because Nathan does not want to deal with it. All because he's constantly trying to be seen as the quiet one. He's also the slick one in the group. The one who knows how to throw the rocks and come back hiding his hands. Mike has known for years who these guys are. That's why he's played it smart and kept his mouth shut. Now time is really telling on them. They aren't genuine and real. If they were they would have never done interviews. They would have been quashed all of this. See they are still boyz trying to figure out what the hell men are. They are not there yet and here's the saddest part they are in their 50s still trying to figure this out. Not have the right voice and guidance in their lives. As they have further their career is now showing big time. They really should have stayed up under Kenny Babyface, Jim Jam and Terry Lewis to let them teach them more about how to become men. But they felt as though they had it. Just like they all do now which is why it keeps producing chaos and hell.
Mike also put out an interview, so his side has been heard.... I just feel it should not e spoken about unless all of them are together to address each other.
Facts!! Stop the separate interviews and hash this out.
Sad to hear about how it all went down! Although I’m happy to see them continue on, I can’t help but hear the void in their harmonies but they still kill it everytime. Mike is very missed but the show must go on.
We heard the story of how they disrespected Babyface too. He made them. This story is BS. They don't care about anything but themselves.....
Yet babyface is still cool with them I don't think they disrespect they just didn't wan't to do the song I'll make love to you because it sounded similar to end of the road
So since Mike was DONE, WHEEEENNNN y'all gonna get a NEW BASS SINGER?!?!? Despite this, that bass was the icing in the harmonic CAKE!!! PLEEEEEEEAAASSEE?!?! In hindsight, y'all wanna add the bass. Even if the people disagree, if that brother fits in the group, DO IT!!
I will be a fan of Boyz II Men Forever!!!! I believe Shawn. I am praying that one day they all can do a reunion performance together.
I was relating this fascinating story to my wife and she pointed out that it sounds a bit suspicious. Why? Because scolioscis doesn't prevent you from answering phone calls. Is it possible Mike had some other issues?
I think Shawn explained what one of the issues was, Mike never enjoyed performing/singing at his core. It appears to have been more about the money for him🤷🏿♂️.

I understand their position but at the same time, Mike's medical diagnosis & condition is a serious one and it affects a person just as harshly, mentally as it does physically.
I could see, why he hid his condition, as dirty as the music industry is, he would have been replaced quickly and his condition would most definitely have been used against him.
Still, I understand both perspectives.
Im glad they never replaced him.

@@NorthPhilly-zr7xc just talked to him on the phone for about 10mins! Was just taking a message for G but we got to talking! Real cool cat! I wouldn’t say I know him but have talked before!
Sorry, he missed his group, he has trauma, I would hate to be ignored that way. But that the cutely of life, people just move on, and your sick, ( I’ve was sick for years and years), I n understand. But as the sick person, not fair. Fair for you boys ( I love boys 2 men) but now older and wiser
Tbh I feel that way too....if it ain't Mike up there as the 4th horseman, then that AINT Boyz II Men period. I'd rather it be 3.
I get that because I hate when groups be swapping members in and out. It's not the same! It happened to work for Destiny's Child, but me....even that was a huge adjustment period. It didn't feel right knowing the voices from the original group and hearing the difference in the sound with the new members. It was just so different. But I commend him for clearing the air, regarding this matter.
EnVogue is another group it didn’t work for. The ladies can sing but it’s not the same
To be fair, you would still have 3 the main singers. The bass doesn’t do many solos so it wouldn’t be a huge change in sound.
@@KM1980Music I disagree...the sound changed significantly; imo. He may not have had solos; however, his voice did give the group a distinctive sound.
Wow.
Mike beat him down.
🤣
But it’s sad how it ended.
They don’t sound the same without him.
New Edition put aside their differences.
I hope they can do the same even if it doesn’t involve Michael coming back to the group.
04:08 - 04:12 got me rolling 😂
Shawn admitted Mike beat him up, this was the reason he kicked him out, he beat the leader up, but no doubt they always admitted that is their brother, respect for never replacing the Legend
The low wide shot needs to change to a higher angled downward shot. A different shot would be more appealing.
this is giving me Temptations vibes although not the same it reminded me of this immediately
Kenny Terry would have been vocally dope
Business is business. You got to keep. Going
Mike was the sex symbol in that group. He was the main attraction. After he left Boyz II Men they lost that appeal. Their sales record shows they lost that appeal.
Once Mike comes their appeal and album sales would improve.
Not true
@@veniswoodley5786 So tell me what the truth is? Michael's Bass and Swag stood Boys II Men from other Male R&B Boy Bands in the '90's. He had an appeal that elevated the Group both aesthetically and vocally. The ladies drooled for Mike. The other 3 Members lack such appeal. For trial, let them announce his comeback and see what would happen to their ticket sales, album sales and feature demands.
if their sales were affected, it wasn't so much because of some loss of sex appeal. If they were affected by the loss of a member, it is much like a child or children seeing a marriage go through separation and divorce and then trying to process, function, and have some normalcy in their lives in the aftermath. It's not the same. The remaining members emulate maturity to keep it together as they move on.
At that time in the 90s all of the members had their own unique appeal.
Boys 2 Men don't need a fourth member. That would affect their unique sound.
Michael Jackspon did very well without Jermaine and Tito. I am sure of it.
Boys 2 Men have stood the test of time and did what a lot of black groups, and people don't do.
They did what was best for everyone instead of sabotaging themselves for the foolish loyalty over one member who failed them time and time again, after they tried to accommodate him.
Forgiveness does not mean that you have to reconcile the relationship. PERIOD!
I beg to differ...
Sex symbol? Shawn and Wanya was the sexiest of the group, especially Shawn. Ain't no way Mike was a sex symbol of the group, what!
Business is business and is never personal.
Injection fellas
Lol 😆 🤣 😂 Stop it lol
@@macadon041 Mike "bass" mccary.he rarely sang as part of the group but he had a unique bass voice.i think he just wanted to leave the group.
Ohhhhh Ahhhh!
@@loveydovey1105 haha...yeah, uhh ahh
His bass lines in that song was dope
Yasssssss! Oooh ahhh...🎶
One of the things that Nate stated about Mike's situations is that he never wrote any music.....which eventually messed up his paper.
Did something happen during the interview that got the floor all dirty?
I pray That mike is ok
I think they should have brought in marc nelson since he was in boyz ii men in the beginning, no he is not a bass but he was a founding member
Marc Nelson left to be solo and eventually joined Az Yet later and left them too to go solo again. A cousin of mine replaced him in Az Yet. He eventually got back with Az Yet. I don't know his relationship with Boyz II Men though.
Marc Nelson gets around. He was recently on tour with Terron Brookes from the temptations movie(he played Eddie Kendricks) and a few others.
Nope.
He was too impatient.
Shawn should have never told anybody about what went down with him & Mike.... Smh now it makes me look at him differently.... Smh
Some great wisdom✊
