I love the story tbh. Takumi became an instructor after doing his racing stint and trained a talented rookie that went back to Japan to find his pops but then somersaulted his way into a wildcard entry in MFG after qualifying in a mates GT86 for lol's. Avex Pictures must have learned a lot from Spriggan to land this anime. Good for them. They do great work and this is well beyond anything they have ever tried before.
To those who are unfamiliar - yes, this is EXACTLY what it looks like. It's essentially _Initial D_ (and is by the same author) with new characters, and modern cars - a spiritual successor.

Now on MFG, we have porsches, audis, ferraris, audis, bmws and also new gtrs, zs, they are top sports/super cars of THE WORLD! And our main character has a humble gt86. It's a modern initial d sequal, GET ON WITH IT!
Becuase this trailer already includes some of the elements that made Initial D great. Eurobeat, similar protagonists to Takumi and Itsuki, japanese mountain roads. And they maanged to keep a similar style but modernize it nontheless, looks awesome!!!
Initial D was something really special. I read mf ghost and it just doesn't capture the same feeling. ID was relatable. Guys hanging out after school and work talking about cars, trying to get girlfriends, street racing forming teams etc. It also was loosely based on real life events and a car/racing culture that actually existed. This new one is set in the future with fantasy elements. I'd be fine with that if the story and characters were actually interesting. I'll still watch it but I think they missed an opportunity to continue Takumi's story as he advanced to legit racing and eventually rally racing, progressing through that world. I'd much rather watch that story.

As an owner of the first gen 86/FRS, I’m happy for this because the FRS was always overshadowed by its competitors and now definitely overshadowed by its successor, the GR86. This anime finally shines a light for us. We needed this.

Edit: Nvm it was Ryosuke Keisuke’s voice would of sounded a bit more aggressive. Now I want Mako to appear in MF Ghost now dang it since at the end of Initial D her and Keisuke ended up in the same Professional racing league. And her Sli80 and Keisuke’s FD were right next to each other in the starting grid.
I hope this show's able to stand with its own two legs without the need to nostalgia bait Initial D fans every chance they get. Seeing the Tofu Boi™ again would be kinda cool though - maybe they'd make him own/drive Bunta's Subaru?
Honestly, my favorite driving music has always been initial D eurobeat as well as anime openings. I love Initial D and am glad someone is making a new car anime!
My driving playlist finally gets some new tracks after all those years. Even the 2 minute sample with the voice overlay gets me hyped for the new tracks.
They really took an all-star cast of voice actors, plus it really brings back the vibe of Initial D, let’s hope it will be just as good and do its predecessor justice

I feel you. There's something about Initial D that feels much more realistic and relatable to me than any slice of life anime out there, and that would be the lives of the characters. Takumi, Itsuki, Iketani and Kenji working or just hanging out (especially in Kenji's case) at the gas station, Bunta's tranquil life as a retired racing legend, Takumi and Mogi's VERY realistic relationship... it all feels weirdly cozy and down to earth to me. Something about that anime always kinda made me feel at home.

Takumi is dead in MF Ghost. In the story he became an international driver and a suspension piece or tire failed(can't remember which, been a few years since I read it) which killed him. The author didn't want to constantly be bringing him back into his new story for fan service or pressured into it by the publisher. So he made it absolutely certain he was dead within the first couple chapters. No way Fujiwara could have lived. The new character was taught by Fujiwara before he died.

I remember SDCC in 2001 or 02, there was a booth in the far back selling "Initial d" volume 1 and 2 dvds it looked Bootleg AF, and i bought vol.1.. and it only covered i think 12 episodes.. but i was HOOKED! Been watching ever since. Been 21 yrs WOW. 💙

Craziest thing about this is that guys with GT86’s will think they can out-drive anything after watching this even though they’re barely getting 190bhp to the rears 😂 It was one thing comparing and racing a tuned AE86 against 180SXs and Skylines as performance was quite similar amongst them… but a GT86 against Porsches? R35 GT-Rs? Ferraris? You’ve got to be joking. It’s basically pushing the underdog trope too far.

I honestly don't know how to feel about this... The fanboy in me really wanted to see Takumi after Project D. That being said I do understand why they wanted to start on a whole new story line.

Initial D is what got me into cars and have a goal is to own my dream/first car a Toyota GT86. Flash foward after two years of ownership, the 86 is a fun car and never disappoints me. So never give up!

Everyone having their cards lined up on top of the machine, waiting for their turn. I still have all the DVDs that I collected during the early to mid2000s. Got most of them from Suncoast Video (RIP).

i grew up with inital d, own a mk3 supra and a 2012 corolla. the supra is just a bigger and heavier 86 while my corolla is a grip machine.

Craziest thing about this is that guys with GT86’s will think they can out-drive anything after watching this even though they’re barely getting 190bhp to the rears 😂
It was one thing comparing and racing a tuned AE86 against 180SXs and Skylines as performance was quite similar amongst them… but a GT86 against Porsches? R35 GT-Rs? Ferraris? You’ve got to be joking. It’s basically pushing the underdog trope too far.

I honestly don't know how to feel about this... The fanboy in me really wanted to see Takumi after Project D. That being said I do understand why they wanted to start on a whole new story line.
Maybe to showcase a newcomer but will eventually be beat by non other than Takumi or something like it, i mean is called the ghost for a reason. Maybe idk

Initial D is what got me into cars and have a goal is to own my dream/first car a Toyota GT86. Flash foward after two years of ownership, the 86 is a fun car and never disappoints me.

How many of you played Initial D at the arcades during its prime in the early 2000s? Wasn't that vibe the absolute best? Seeing a line at the Initial D machines. Everyone having their cards lined up on top of the machine, waiting for their turn. I still have all the DVDs that I collected during the early to mid2000s. Got most of them from Suncoast Video (RIP).
The prices on the GR86 and BRZ are gonna go crazy once this hits mainstream
