  • Tuesday, March 9th 1976.
Footage of the first match of the final pool between the national teams of Guinea and Nigeria at the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations tournament held in Ethiopia.
The Guineans, nicknamed "Syli Nationale" (The "National Elephants") were favourites over Nigeria's "Green Eagles"; the dominance at club level of Hafia F.C. of Conakry whose players formed a significant component of the Syli Nationale, playing a huge part in this assessment. Hafia had defeated Nigeria's Enugu Rangers in the previous year's African Cup of Champions Club tournament final.
However, Nigeria took the lead through their mid-fielder Muda Lawal, whose team IICC Shooting Stars would win the African Cup Winners Cup later in the year.
    According to the Reuters report:
"Nigeria held on grimly to their advantage...Both teams started extremely slowly and seemed to have lost a lot of aggression after the two-day lay-off since the first round finished last Saturday (6 March). They played cautiously and seemed more concerned not to let in goals than to score them. Guinea's forwards, who seemed the most dangerous of all the teams in last week's matches, made many mistakes and appeared to have lost the imagination and flair which distinguished them in earlier games."
Nabylaye Camara equalised for Guinea in the final minute of the match.
After each team played two further matches, Morocco pipped Guinea to win the tournament for the first time. Guinea's runners up position remains their best performance in the tournament to date.

Merci mon ami. That day my friend, l was glued to rfi in Paris until the last minute when the late papa Camara score the equalizer. In the end, this draw cost Guinea the African cup of nations in 1976. They also tied with Morocco in final 1:1 in Addis Ababa. Merci beaucoup mon ami. Bless you.

Do you know who scored for Nigeria that day. I am not sure if it was either Kunle Awesu or Thompson Usiyan. That game was probably Christian Chukwu best international’s game. Goodness me, le reporteur de radio France international ne parlait que de lui. I still remember ( il descend, il descend toujours, Christian Chukwu). Merci encore une fois.

As mentioned in the description box, it was Muda (Mudashiru) Lawal, the mid-field maestro of IICC Shooting Stars of Ibadan, who put Nigeria ahead. Very elegant and resouceful player, who would win the Africa Cup Winners Cup with Shooting Stars in 1976 and then the Africa Nations Cup with Nigeria in 1980 (he scored one goal in the 3-0 win over Algeria in the final). Alas, he died in 1991 at the age of 37.

@@olamavincent4413 l don’t think Odegbami played that day. It was the legendary Kunle Awesu who played left wing that day. That entire team was the dream team of Nigeria. Une excellente équipe de football.

That team ( green Eagle) would have done well at the Montreal Olympic if not that we boycotted in protest of the Apatheid regime in South Africa
