    Did not realise the crew carried out this level of maintenance. As an ex merchant Sailor myself, we did all the ongoing stuff but when it came to yard time, we left it all to the yard and had some well earned shore leave.

    This may be the best TH-cam channel I have ever found. Now I can sit here in my office in Salt Lake City Utah and dream about being where you guys are everyday! Honestly, this is awesome, love all of the vids even these ones out of season to see what you guys are doing. Keep these up please... especially as we get closer to the snow flying out here in the Rockies! :-)

    You description says the boat comes out at the end of every season, so that was a years worth of algae, and did they buy a new chain because the old chain was ugly?
    Have you done any video's of the engine room, and all the systems that support the ship, if you haven't, that would be a good video.
    I'm liking your video's, I just watched four.

  • @dazoomcat
    @dazoomcat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Man she looks brand new! Like the day she was launched. How long does a anchor chain last? For you to have to get all new ones.

    • @TomJoeSHOW
      @TomJoeSHOW  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      These were replaced at 10 years, but your mileage will vary on how much use them. Typically you use the first 3 shackles more so to extend the overall life of the chain you can just swap the chain around and use the other end. Our chains are slightly beefed up for her size, so smaller chain might not of latest us 10 years. Now I think about it I would of liked to cut one of the links of the old chain to see how deep the corrosion had set in.

    Ahoy mate! Just wanted to say that your videos are friggin awesome and I hope you keep it up! Also, I was curious if I could pick your brain to see what your thoughts and opinions are on my next question. So I served in the United States Navy as Boatswains Mate which literally does all the exact same work that you and your Deckhands do. Without going into massive details of my experience as a sailor, do you think that I would be at an advantage if I were to get into the wonderful world of working on Yachts? I loved the job and without trying to brag, feel like I was pretty damn good at it, so I was interested to know what you thought. Look forward to hearing from you, when you have the time of course.

    • @TomJoeSHOW
      @TomJoeSHOW  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jason really happy to have you and your experience here. Given your background you would have so many different qualities that the average yachtie wouldn’t. My recommendation would be to talk to some crew agents they will point you in the right direction. The experience is 100% transferable but there will be some new skills most maintenance stuff to learn that you can very easily pick up on the job. October/November yachts in Florida will be crewing up for Caribbean season. Keep me updated.

    • @jforester7
      @jforester7 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome, thanks for the reply man. Yeah I figured that while my experience is definitely a plus, that there will obviously be some things that are different. I'm pretty quick to learn new stuff depending on what it is, so I should be good. Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to Florida this year, hopefully I can get the gears turning on this whole thing early next year. Thanks again for replying!

    Nice video. What was all done to the ship during this video? On a ship this size do you use copper coat for anti-foul? You also talked about a course you where taking. What course was that (new or a refresher)? Thanks for sharing.

    • @TomJoeSHOW
      @TomJoeSHOW  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Bill thanks for your comment, I'll have to check with he captain about the anti-fouling and coper coating, its not a part of the process I'm aware of. In this yard period we mostly had engineering maintenance carried out on generators, props and shafts.
      The yard stripped the hull right back to bare steel and built up to anti fouling.On the deck side of things took care of some of the minor corrosion in bilges was the biggest job for the crew. Besides that many blister repairs. We also installed a new S-band radar system and some other upgrades in the bridge.
      The course I did was my Navigation and Radar module towards my OOW, its my second from last module before I'm ready to take my oral.

    • @TomJoeSHOW
      @TomJoeSHOW  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      after checking with the captain, the antifoul is an International product called Micron Extra, which does contain Dicopper oxide and copper pyrithione.

      At night we tried to keep as low profile as possible. And the spot light messes with your night vision

    If you are spraying paint the mask is no good. You need and organic vapor acid gas mask only. Some paints are very toxic so be careful.

    • @TomJoeSHOW
      @TomJoeSHOW  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically when painting or mixing paints we wear the 3m vapour masks. Awl Grip paint is epoxy based and pretty nasty stuff.

    What is the cost of refitting a boat of this size and how often do you have to do it

    • @TomJoeSHOW
      @TomJoeSHOW  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This was an extended yard period, the maintenance varies year on year so the costs will always change depending on what you have done and where. Typically yachts go into yard at least once a year for a 4-6 week period. Longer refits or out of season boats could see yard periods extend to 3-6 months.

    Don't modern yachts have rust resistant technology like modern cars do?? I dont no how old these yachts are but for the last 10 years at least cars no longer rust!maybe its because of the salt that its inevitable!!??

    • @TomJoeSHOW
      @TomJoeSHOW  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not an engineer myself, but my dad is on another yacht. He started on smaller yachts and built up the contacts and experience to work his way up to much larger yachts. I will make a video on how to get into the industry.
