I kept saying I wanted to accompany him when he was handling business and I know other girlfriends of the self employed were with their boyfriends during these activities. I’ll never forget what he told me, it’s too dangerous, and I was the only pure thing in his life. He did not want me exposed or to change. I feel so bad about that family you reported on.

I’m currently living here, Birmingham is definitely a warzone in many areas
Born in Birmingham, grew up in Mobile .
Thanks for discussing this. I live in Birmingham, but am an outsider and I had no idea the gang issue was so bad here. I grew up in Albuquerque, NM and they have a real bad crime and gang problem as well. It’s funny because I always thought Birmingham felt safer than Albuquerque, but that is probably just because I am aware of the hidden problems in my hometown and not in Birmingham.
I consider myself lucky because I originally moved to Birmingham for work and at the time there was a real problem with finding vacant apartments to rent in the “nice areas” of the city. So I ended up spending 5 months living in the East side until I was able to find a nicer apartment to move into. I always heard rumors that it was very dangerous, but thankfully the people in my neighborhood left me alone. I’m sure I looked really out of place because I am a white-skinned Mexican who isn’t really afraid of bad neighborhoods. I would just go for walks and people would stare at me lol!
I’d be interested in hearing more information and stories you have about Birmingham. Many thanks and blessings to you!

Mexican is a Mexican we don’t see color buddy and I’m from tha east side of Birmingham
@@richhamp8964 Generally speaking, that is not true. There really is a split between brown Mexicans and White Mexicans. And this even applies to the Latino community as a whole world-wide.
If you have the time, go watch some Mexican television news or Mexican movies. You will find that most of the people on TV are White Latinos. There are not a lot of Brown Latinos on TV. I personally think there is some sort of unspoken beauty rule where people want to be more “white.”
As to how this has effected me, I have never have and never will fit in with the Brown Mexicans because some of them truly are racist and don’t view me as being a part of their community. I understand it to some extent, but it is really sad. I think some are jealous because I am generally treated as a White person in a social context, instead of a minority. This is doubly true now that I live in Alabama where I think everyone just assumes I’m White.
I personally don’t like it, and I wish we Hispanics could just all be one community and get along. But what I am saying is the uncomfortable truth, and this has been my lived experience.
As a side note, I spent a summer living in Costa Rica when I was younger, and I was shocked to see the open racism they have toward Mexicans, Nicaraguans, and other perceived “lower” Latino people. It is a myth that US politicians spread that all Latino people are united. That is not even close to being the case.

Despite racism, when the Black community and family were unified, they were a force. Please research comparing 1940-2024. Pay attention to the loss of the nuclear family, abortion rates, loss of spirituality, and government subsidies. Black culture was so strong in the 1940s and early 1950s, that they were on their way to becoming a socioeconomic powerhouse. Their neighborhoods looked nice, clean, and safe. Then it changed when the community and family culture changed. What enticed the change?
