Many of you are pointing out that the Genesis Mini doesn't have Streets of Rage. For those of you unfamiliar with the Genesis Mini, it's not one of the games that comes on the unit out of the box. The comment was meant to be taken as "it's easily put on the Genesis Mini". I should have said "you can play it on the Genesis Mini". Sorry for the confusion.

You can thank Europe and South Amerca's heavy adoption of the Master System for this. From memory, you could still just about get new Master System games on shop shelves in the UK up to the mid-90s!

Master System was a powerhouse player overseas. It was more popular than the NES in many countries. Brazilian company Tectoy famously adopted it as a mainstay product in Brazil producing variants of the hardware for 20 years after it was officially discontinued by Sega and selling hundreds of thousands of units on a yearly basis technically making it the longest-lived video game console.

Its good until you read the comments on the game and its mostly people complaining how there's no "DLC" and how the online multiplayer is "dead." Im assuming these are mostly kids who are used to how it works in modern games . I dont think the genre can make a comeback if people cant accept them for what they are and are trying to apply modern standards to them.

@@Chaz4543 I have to believe that the complaint about lack of DLC stems from a lack of content in the base game. Otherwise it's just consumerist insanity.
The multiplayer one though might hold water if it somehow less functional then it should be. But either way, the volume of complaints matter as much as the nature of them, so I wouldn't give them much stock if they're not as prominent.
Single player games still have a lot of wind behind them, so that's definitely not an impediment to any genre that never depended solely on multiplayer to begin with.

It's a weird game for me. I can fight my way through Streets of Rage 2 on Mania on solo and have a good time. Doing so on Streets of Rage 4 was a really annoying experience that got me saying quite a few unkind words, it is definitely a game that is balanced for co-op play.

Great overview my friend! As a fan of the original game on the GENESIS (me and my bro got it at TOYS ‘R US when it was brand new for like $60 bucks!) it was cool seeing how the MASTER SYSTEM did in terms of quality. I actually remember renting the GAME GEAR version waaaaay back in the day too! That handheld was noble in its attempt at bringing full color titles to a portable but it was too early in the gaming world for it to actually work. I’d say it wouldn’t be until the GAME BOY : ADVANCED SP that we truly got a well made, full color, portable gaming system.

As a kid, my parents couldn't afford a Megadrive, but I was super hyped everytime a popular Megadrive game got a Master System port. Streets of Rage on the Master System is excellent and surprisingly close, my only complaint at the time was the lack of 2 player co op. I was never aware that the Game Gear version was different until I tried it many years later, and it feels SO much worse to me. The ironic thing is that I actually got given the Master System version as a gift to take on holiday, so for my first 2 weeks of owning the game, I played it on my Game Gear with a Master Gear convertor. So, while I owned the MS version, it always "feels" like a Game Gear title to me, because thats where I first experienced it.

The SMS version looks excellent; it's always nice to see when games produced for an aging and secondary console are still given TLC during development. Would have loved to have a beat-em-up of this quality for the SMS in 1988 when the system was in its prime, and at the same time trying to carve out any kind of a market share against the NES. It definitely would have been a show off title back then.

It also avoids sprite flicker, which was rare for an 8-bit brawler.

Something I think a lot of people forget is the limitation of portable console game screens. At the same time, those screens are conducive to different kind of graphics. So it's a bit unfair to compare the Sega Master System's Streets of Rage's graphics to the Game Gear's straight-up. But I see doing it for the purposes of this video.
I remember working at Gametrailers, and a young editor complaining about a PSP game's graphics (using a janky TV adaptor). I brought my actual PSP, let him play the game on it, and he noticed how it was night and day.
Also, the non-shoulder-throw grapple move is more a German suplex - at least from the character you show.

I'm 38. Got a master system 2 for my tenth birthday. Loved it. But the 8 bit versions of the 16 bit versions were lacking too much. I wanted a mega drive so bad.

Just been playing both of thease for the first time. Quite enjoyable taking fools to Suplex city on the game gear 😂

I'd say the issue with GG graphics in that game is that the backgrounds are high-contrast with lots of details; and on a resolution so small, it ends up looking like visual noise.
Pixel artists know that characters and objects should have high contrast, whereas backgrounds should have low contrast.

Imagine if Sega didn't care about backward compatibility with the SG1000 and released the Master System with 68008 processor and a Yamaha OPL1 FM soundchip. It could have had a very faithful port of Streets of Rage.

I had the SMS version as a kid, I loved it, however I do think that the devs could have done a little more, there ought to be more than two enemies on the screen at once. Double Dragon managed it with a two player mode.
