In the debate about the continued existence of the traffic light coalition, SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert is demanding a clear signal from the FDP. "It would be important for us that the FDP leadership then also gives a clear statement about where we stand," said Kühnert in the ARD "Morgenmagazin".
It is the task of a party's leadership bodies to provide clarification. "And then we will see today whether these are isolated voices or whether there are more rumblings." FDP Vice-President Wolfgang Kubicki said on election night on Welt TV that either the traffic light coalition "will succeed in finding a reasonable common denominator in the next few weeks or it will no longer make sense for the Free Democrats to continue to participate in this coalition."
Kühnert said he "assumes that cooperation in the traffic light coalition will continue." There are still important decisions to be made, such as on the budget, the collective bargaining agreement law or the pension package. The general secretary stressed that everyone in the SPD knows that they have a long way to go in the next twelve months. The federal election is coming up next September.
In the state elections in Brandenburg, the SPD narrowly beat the AfD. Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke's Social Democrats became the strongest party in Sunday's election after catching up, but their previous coalition partners, the CDU and the Greens, suffered significant losses. The FDP received less than one percent of the vote.
