It is lovely Pat. I used to catch tadpoles where I lived in Suffolk UK, in the pond next door to us. I am 59 now, but I was about 7/8 then. Kids don't do that now do they.
Having left Ireland as a child many decades ago, for the poverty and Slums of Birmingham, this lovely piece of work brought back many happy memories. Whether it be the Old neighbourhoods of Dublin or the bpmb sites and back to back houses of Birmingham, it was a wonderland for us kids. Few had a TV even if it had any kids shows. Computers existed only in Sci Fi comics. The streets were our playground and our imagination alone supplied what equipment we needed. I feel sorry fir kids now
i loved the poem and the music brought back my happy childhood memories my grandparents took me to dublin every year for my holidays then we travel to mayo happy days
I did chase the horse and car when the jam jar man came to collect and my Mam would get a cup and soucer. I can still remember the smile on the jam jar man's face. He loved it and would laugh with the children. That cup and soucer was gold for us.
They were more inasinte times ,there was all the time in the world, it goes so quick now ,I took loads of photos in my teenage years with me mates the girls ,I love looking back on every few years ,an the old family ones the da took ,there so precious ,we didn't have much growing up ,but don't matter , playing out on the road was all we needed , an today's kids have to have everything so different . Love the video . brilliant.
im only 33 and wasent born tll 1979,but i remember we wud hang around builden sites and swing of the scaffols, and say scetch heres the gotchy hahaha got shivers when i heard that, and we used to bunk into the pictures and the baths just to get a free swim,i did all these things around clondalkin years ago, brillant place to live with decend people, but as usay dublin has changed, clondalkin to..brill video loved it
Bingo it takes me back....this one is a memory tapper...where did the pics come from ... well put in order with the story. with more of this we'll never forget whatsisname
I really love this poem and I think it deserves its own music, which is nothing other than the Dublin accent. I love Raglan Road aswell and the tune. In my childhood my heroes were the paper boys in Dublin, I always wanted to be one - they were sometimes younger than myself but they looked so strong and self-assured. The Dublin without central heating but with coal fires was indeed a very different and in many ways much kinder place than today. Thank you for this wonderful video.
great poem...montreal isnt too bad listening to this.will be checking in to see us bate cork in the football and hurling, and to make sure Bohs stay up.My town eh miss ya!!!
@TheSnugPub Thanks for the comment on the poem , glad you loved it can relate to it...nearly everyone of a particular age group can because it was what we did..... all good clean innocent fun and adventure ...I was reared on the outer limits of the liberties just off Camden St behind the De Luxe Cinema ....AHHH sure them were the days ....All the best , Pat
Ollie Bulger from Kildare Road sitting on his horse and cart at the beginning of the video. Pat McCann my old school him and I were in the same class 66 years ago.
Well done Bingo. Brings me back a bit. Mind ye some of it is before my time. Your lucky Lampy is not around or you WOULD get a swipe behind the ear. For talking about being surrounded be all dat luv.
This is a long shot... But does anyone have any information on a mechanics that was open on Camden street in the 1950's or 1960's? My grandad worked there after he came back from Canada, he has mentioned it a few times... Would love to show him a photo of it, it would mean the world to him.
Hi Dublin Boy sorry for the delay in replying but I only got to check the comments today...You mention a lot of the stuff that for me all those years ago were part of my childhood and I'm talking about 30 years before you were born ..thank you for your comment and I'm glad you enjoyed it ....Bingo
Opening shot is the late Ollie bulger with his poor horse n cart its said his was worth millions but sometimes begged he lived in crumlin and owned a lot of property but in his last few years he charged tourists for photos outside the guinness hopstore so the moral of the story is live your life as Ollie never married never had a holiday when you die as a miser someone else spends your money
