The change in Foy's demeanor as she realizes he's made some really good points... very well done.
Lord Altrincham (John Grigg)'s famous criticisms of the Queen and the Monarchy in 1957 remain well-known. This is a good depiction. The Queen asked to see him and in fact some changes then followed
* presentation of debutantes ceased after 1958
* the monarch's annual Christmas address was televised the next year (it had been on radio since 1930)
* the queen did 'open up' and get out to see 'ordinary people' - very successfully from the 1960s onwards (royal walkabouts, though KIng GeorgeVI and Queen Elizabeth did them in Canada in 1939 and in Britain during WW2)
It probably helped that he was a member of the House of Lords - a hereditary peer.
What about the divorce thing? Did she act upon that before 3/4 of her kids divorced?
Lord Altrincham gave ip his title in 1963 (when it officially vested). He continued his journalism career and at the end of life had written the first four volumes of a bio of David Lloyd George (that was critically and popularly celebrated). He died in 2001 before finishing the series.
@lordalessan It'd be more difficult to do anything about that because of being head of the Church of England, whose protocols and processes make Parliament look straightforward.
This clip caused me to think of the scene in a later season where the Queen is battling with Thatcher over South Africa. I thought that this Elizabeth in 1957 was not the Elizabeth of the 1980s, who proposed to a Thatcher wrapped up in racism and classism that African monarchs are as royal as her own Queen.
The title reads incorrectly. It should say deference, not difference.
Obviously this is true and yet somehow I can’t help but hear this comment in the queen’s voice.
I’ve grown accustomed to the butchering of the English language throughout TH-cam and beyond. It is shocking but no longer surprising.

The Crown at its ABSOLUTE best. I love that they didn't give into any temptation to make this critic of the Queen look bad. And Claire portrays "wounded ego" beautifully. She's a dream to watch.

They were very careful to make her look good while going out of their way to trash the rest of the royal family, knowing her high approval rating among the general public. When you understand that The Crown is republican (in the British sense) propaganda you understand the choices they made.
Lighting in this scene is phenomenal. Light fully on his face, hers is half shadow and half-lit. So symbolic of their discussion of moving with the tines.
I can just imagine her grandmother Queen Mary blowing smoke in this man's face and bluntly saying, "What utter rubbish." 😆

It's because of people like him that the British monarchy could survive the 20th century. Even when other crown heads fell left, right and center.

She doesn’t want to accept the age of deference is ending, and I’m like “One day the newspaper is going to run a transcript of a phone conversation in which your son told his mistress that he wished he could be one of her tampons. Why? Because the media will eventually figure out stories about Royal scandals sell more papers than stories about royals cutting ribbons”
But that tampon story is why that mistress is now Queen as the public saw it was true love whatever that is.

I never understood the anti-divorce issue, the Anglican church was founded by Henry VIII because the catholic church would not allow divorce...the church of England was founded on divorce.
Annulment. He has his marriage annulled. Divorce was a bridge too far then.
Accept it was based on Catherine's marrige to Henry VIII older brother who died before their marrige was consummated. So her second marrige was vaild and was a divorce imo. @@NoOne-gc5ot

Under Catholicism he was still a married man so on marrying Anne he was technically a bigamist. Not far from the truth that the church in England was founded on the back of marriage breakdown. Annulment or divorce, call it what you will.

Marriage, in this sense, does not belong to the Catholic Church, nor the Anglican one, nor any other religious group or belief system. God Himself owns and holds marriage accountable. For a british king to have a farse of an annulment is still a divorce.
Wow. This scene could start so much discussion and debate and with valid arguments on both sides. I recently read a book called "The Needs of Strangers" by Michael Ignatieff (1984) in which the author talks about the importance of differences in society, finding identity in what people don't have in common while still having people's needs met, along with discussion about what is need and who determines that. A very challenging book with much else in it, but well worth the time and effort to read it.

Claire Foy is absolutely brilliant as young Elizabeth. She is riveting in the role.
I like that the tension coming from the queen and her hostility to his ideas do not faze him at all. He passionately believes in what he is saying. This once, the Queen forgets to ring the bell for the guest to be escorted outside. She has lost her composure.

John Heffernan is such a talented actor and so underrated. He did a great job here as Lord Altrincham!

My guess is the guy who uploaded this had an auto-correct error or didn't know they are different words. I've met plenty of people in life that are not good spellers or their vocabulary is limited. They may not realize that there is a word, deference, as they have always used the wrong word and for whatever reason, be it a lack of caring on their own part, or a lack of correction by parents, teachers, or peers, they have continued to use the wrong word.
As always terrific acting here and from both performers. Claire Foy with just a look conveyed so much. To use some older American slang, the Queen looked she was going to "blow a gasket", but kept herself under control. Nothing was said or done in anger, but the anger comes through. --- One criticism I have for this scene is the use of the word "transparent". I don't recall "transparent" being used in that context until around the time President Obama was in office here in the U.S. Still this scene is outstanding.

I think the undercurrent regarding Foy's clipped pronunciation of "Next" was that it was intended to convey a sort of shield for the Queen. It served as a blend of authority and unspoken acknowledgement that, in the face of Altrincham's cogent critiques, that verbal cover was all she had in the moment.

Of all the fabulous Crown episodes, this is my favorite. The actor that played Altrincham was wonderful and Claire Foy was perfect. I love the way the Crown summed up the story with real photos at the end of the episode such as this one and the exposure of Edward Vlll as a Nazi sympathizer. Its very emotional to see history recreated.

Everything he recommended to start was followed by the queen in real life and now some people want to abolish monarchy.
The main reason why some people want to abolish monarchy is lack respect because the monarchs became more accessible, open and their private life are always on TV.
In private work sector managers and supervisors should never EVER treat their subordinates as friends/peers because those same people will lose respect on you as you get closer personally.

Young Elizabeth wasn't much on accepting an advice 😂 and the funny is that was very reasonable his statements!! She practically call him out for his failures but what he said was correct and adaptable!!
It was commendable that he didn't take the bait when she called him out. If he had he would have completely lost her ear. Because he didn't, it maybe helped her see that he as being genuine and rather than bearing her ill will, he had good intentions.

The popularization, or decrease in deference displayed by the monarchy has been blamed for the intrusion into the lives of the monarchy by the press, and the death of Princess Diana at the hands of the Paparazzi.

If they do not often use the two words, they will not. Consider “disinterested” vs. “uninterested”, how many people not considering umpires or referees jobs would care. Excluding NBA referees, who have been known to shave points, of course.
Foy is a phenomenal actress, but I think her attempt to project contempt in this scene went over the top. She had a look on her face and responded with such passive aggression that you'd think she was ready to summon a squad of guards to take him out back to be hung drawn and quartered.
History tells us the queen was open to many of the ideas he presented and implementing them did help bring the monarchy into the post war era.
Not really agreeing. She's demonstrating a lot of suppressed anger here, true. But Foy is also subtly projecting hurt ego. It's more complex than it seems. What's notable is that the Queen was open and sensible enough to eventually take some of his advice and make changes.
That the church of England doesn't eknowledge divorced people... is quite the irony, given why this church was created in the first place.
The disconnect between the monarchy and its "subjects" is that, it never let go of its founding idea - that the role was a calling from God himself, that the English Monarch, in many ways, was akin to the Pope; the Almighty's Representative on Earth, and therefore, beyond reproach, beyond approach, and by definition - inaccessible. That those who were not of this calling were to stand in fear and reverence.
Society moved on, things became more equal, the Monarchy did not.

The idea that we all have equal moral worth; that our interests ought to count for the same, and that we possess the same bundle of basic rights. When a Head-of-State believes and enforces separation between Herself and certain of Her subjects, how can there be equality of moral worth? "Separate but equal" is inherently unequal.

By allowing so-called 'normal' and 'ordinary' people in to her home and family is why 'the British Imperial House of Windsor' has these familial issues. Royals marrying outside their God-ordained rank, wedding commoners, has brought nothing but trouble and ongoing feuding. And, look! Most of those unions ended in divorce! Royals and commoners must be kept apart! This is not about royals thinking we are better than any one else. This is about preserving 'the seed of David' and 'the divine right of kings.' The mantle of being legitimately begotten 'of the blood royal' is a heavy weight that no one wants, the calling brings perpetual fatigue. The weight is made worse when our subjects interject their feelings, emotions, and opinions in to matters they know nothing about. Royal matters-of-state are NOT and shall never be the concern of the general public, the common populace. Let matters-of-state to those called and chosen by The Most High and go about your lives like the sheep ye all continue proving you all are and always will be. Obey 'the Ten Commandments' and live honourably.

The queen did end the "debutantes" being presented to the monarch, she ended that in 1958. She did allow the televising of the Christmas speech in 1957. Other than that, the queen remained closed off. The arrogance of monarchy to think they know best.

That being said, things are vastly more different than even Diana's time.

With the kindest intent, Princess Diana has been gone for over a quarter of a century. Nobody knows what she would have done if she had lived or if she’d have done anything. She might have married Dodi (poor her if so) and gone to live in California or Egypt. She wasn’t a saint and she’d probably be embarrassed the way some people refer to her as if she was.
Diana did a lot of good but Diana liked her position, lets not pretend she'd have wanted an end to the monarchy

Diana tried to tear the monarchy down from the inside and maybe that's why the Brits liked her - a recent poll shows that the British want a republic and democracy not a constitutional monarchy. This has no reflection on Charles and Camilla - they just want this family to stop milking them! Waity Katie is already itching to get the title of queen....
