Growth opportunity, visibility, career trajectory are limited in London offices. US folks have an advantage of more facetime and faster promo processes. This might not be true for Meta which has a bit different culture for promo process but it is true for other FAANG companies.
This tradeoff is true for Meta as well. In general, the most important projects are always closer to the leadership which is in the headquarters. There might be exceptions where the leadership of a product invests in a different location. It’s always worth considering this while joining a team in remote offices like UK or even in India.
Nice interview! Himanshu nayyar was my C-programming TA back when I was in 1st year at IIIT-H in 2012. He and Shipra Malhotra taught me C-Programming. Thanks for interviewing him. Will subscribe to your channel.
I want to add that the $3K range for rent that Himanshu mentions for Bay Area applies mostly to San Francisco City. In the extended Bay Area like Sunnyvale and suburbs, rent can be significantly lower.
Another factor to consider is Recession. UK and other countries in Europe have officially declared recession, but US has not yet done it. With recession, price of everyday commodities would increase, which in-turn would reduce the Savings!
Thanks a lot for the insightful interview, it would be great if you could make more videos about Software Engineering opportunities in the UK especially in big tech, hedge funds and HFT firms, thank you.
Hi, thanks for such insightful video on different aspects of LDN life. I am also planning to come there in early Aug 2024, from India for work purpose, & your guidance/suggestion would be invaluable for me in terms of finding a good Accommodation etc..
Let's say you are already in FAANG company at London. How difficult is to switch to other FAANG's. Do you get any edge for already being part of FAANG? Is the job market more competitive/difficult than India?
You definitely have an edge if you are already in FAANG as your talent and level is calibrated. The job market in UK is bit low currently, so there aren’t many openings even in FAANGs. I don’t have a comparison between UK and India. Between UK and US, it’s similarly competitive. It’s just that UK will have a lot less options than US
How to join your team? I need a manager who can ask me about my growth :) I am a Azure Data Engineer in case you're interested to hire me in your team? hehehe
Thanks for the comprehensive video Mehak! Looking forward for more UK vs US nuances and episodes 👍

It looks like, if you are looking for money then go for USA or if you are looking for work life balance then UK is best option
Yes, in general, the biggest opportunities for software engineers remain in the US currently
UK is Bekaar Now ...

Yes, this is a good topic. We’ll make one. Thanks for the suggestion

That 8-9 months extension for h1b job loss is for compelling circumstances and that is not easy to prove
Yep, correct!
I don't usually comment but this discussion was actually insightful and fun to listen.
Thank you! This made my day ☺️

Hehe, unfortunately, I am only a SWE manager and my company isn’t hiring at the moment. Good luck on finding a good manager!
