I used a free simple CAD program used to draw electronic schematics. Its available from ExpressPCB. I layed out the mounting holes for the switches than using the programs text editor added the labels. Printed it out on adhesive backed label paper. Applied this to the aluminum panel and sprayed a few light coats of clear acrylic paint for protection.
@@gunnerjohnson4103 Because Whelen called it the 12Q, and the Q siren is a copyright of Federal Signal. Federal has been making the Q siren ever since the 1960's, so that's why they won the lawsuit over Whelen, forcing them to stop production of the 12Q siren.
I have the Alpha 12M and I've wired up a bunch of the WSHF295's, Whelen strobe and led systems but I'm having trouble grasping the control wiring schematics included in the installation instructions. It's assuming you'll be using the Alpha series Whelen switches. I like your setup and was wondering if you have a video of you making and wiring the control box. If not I'd be interested in seeing one or even information on how you wired everything. To me you power the P2 switch circuit Red +12v wire then supply +12 volts to one of the 4 control wires but I'd like to make sure, so I don't fry the unit. I've noticed very little is mentioned online about the 12Q or 12M. Thanks for any replies.
You are correct, the power rocker switch supplies +12 volts to the amplifier unit and the common lug of the rotary switch and to one side of the air horn and manual pushbuttons. All functions are enabled when +12 volts is applied to the correct control wires.
I guess where I was fubared was on the P2 9 pin plug. You have the P2-1 Red +12v wire that I assumed was an input but upon your reply and reading more this is actually a +12v output to supply voltage to the 4 different control wires. Is this correct? Also do you have a source, part # etc. for the rotary switch you used? Thanks again.
That is correct. The rotary switch is a 2 pole 6 position rotary switch. I used a Radio Shack part # 275-1386. This is a inexpensive "open" switch which is fine for demo purposes. For emergency vehicle installations I would replace with a quality "enclosed dust proof" switch.
Alpha 12Q's are getting rare, The story goes that Federal threatened Whelen with a lawsuit because it sounded like a Q siren and Whelen even used "Q" in the model name.It was discontinued and replaced with the Alpha 12M which sounds very different. They are out there but hard to find, watch Ebay and Craigslist. Expect to pay $200.00-300.00 for one.
Hi friend. This mermaid is very spectacular. How can I do to get the diagram of that electronic diagram? I would be eternally grateful to you. I want to make a mermaid of my son with that wonder. Greetings from Chile.
The first wail reminded me of the older sirens. Very nice.
Why?!
@@staspastukh2005 It has the kind of note and whirl sound.

Very cool indeed. No idea that the 12Q had power call tones too. I will have to start the search ;)
How much i love dem classic sirens!
This Whelen Q sounds much better than those simulated mechanicals!
reverse thrust I can't believe Federal Signal sued Whelen just making a siren like this
Gunner Johnson well what if you came up with a siren but then someone you hate took it?

Hey man where did you get that from or how did you make it? I'd like to take my siren out of my pov now and put this in

I’ve always loved the whelen whoop, I hate there normal powercall tho
What did you use to make the labels on the panel?
He doesn't know!

NICE!
How did you wire it for a siren brake??
+Daniel Demarest Its been a while and I no longer have the 12Q but I believe you apply +12 volts to the white/green wire to activate the brake.
Is this for sale
Thanks alot!
ISO: a Whelen alpha 12q. I have an in good condition federal signal Omega 90 siren with 5000 controller for trade.

Yeah. Trademarked actually. I wish I could use them in my videos but I can’t😢
That’s no powercall
