@@Fleetwootmack same, I love that song but I always see that exact thought/comment whenever this album gets brought up anywhere. I’m not saying people are lying but it does feel like a hive mind kinda thing
21:32 Bob, your initial thoughts were right. That is 100% a guitar riff you’re hearing in end credits. The sample is from a section of a song called Monomyth by Animals as Leaders. I’ve been playing guitar for about 15 years now, and have been listening to animals as leaders since high school. They’re a super technical progressive metal band who’s fanbase is mostly guitar nerds lol. Definitely a specific niche within the metal community. Anyways, I never expected to hear them on a hip hop record and I was FLOORED when I heard peggy sample them (the high school nerd in me was delighted ❤)
As a musician, Peggy is such an inspiration to me. His music oozes passion and creativity and you can tell there's absolutely no compromising his vision. I can go on and on, but this dude really deserves every ounce of praise he gets.
Peggy has honestly become one of my favourites after this album. Veteran, AMHAC and LP! are all masterpieces in my opinion and i think he is only getting better and better
everyone leaves black ben carson, communist slow jams and the 2nd amendment out the picture and like, come on, those are great albums too!! a little rough yes, but they have a really angsty, unfiltered and raw quality that just makes them special.
this album grew on me so much, i already liked it when i first listened but later it became one of my favorite albums ever, the production is just mind blowing, i had to listen to it a lot of times to get all the details on the beats and peggy's lyrics just matches it perfectly
this is easily peggy’s best in my opinion, top 10 favorite album of all time for me. came out at just the right time for me to enjoy and experience it and i’ve listened to it more than any other album ever, especially now that he’s put the offline songs on streaming. its a masterpiece !
This was his last album on an awful record deal. The label didn't even want to pay for the samples and pushed the popular singles from EP! into LP!, hence the two versions. Major props to him for not putting out whatever and just getting out of there.
this was my AOTY last year, such a fantastic album. The first time i heard end credits i played it on repeat 6 times before moving on to the rest of the album it just floored me. Love peggy
Love that you pointed out the DOOM line, I think I actually commented on the October set list video asking if you were gonna pick DOOM back up, maybe with Vaudeville Villain. Probably my second favorite DOOM behind Madvillainy, it really is incredible. Also happy that you reacted this amazing amazing album, my introduction to Peggy and actually one of the first full albums I listened to and loved.
I do hope for one day that Bob would get an interest into Armand Hammer regardless of the the beef that went down between the two, I'm glad the two of them handled it easily and let go of it.
yo speaking of the britney spears interpolation, he did an amazing call me maybe cover in like 2013, he somehow turned that song into a trippy track haha idk if its on tidal but its on his spotify/youtube for sure Bob
what an absolutely great album, rebound is probably my favorite still, and hazard duty pay, end credits (online version), og, and the ghost of ranking dread rounds out my top 5. hope you get to the EPs soon, they have some great songs on both of them, also interested to see if you're going to react to them in a normal Friday format on a monday since it's on the shorter side
No real decision on the EPs yet. Might do them over 2 Mondays, might do both on a Friday... at minimum, it'll be after October as I've fully booked this month
In Dikembe the 'millions of views not bad for a commie' is a reference to one of his first albums under the alias JPEGMAFIA named 'communist slow jams'. It's way more tame but I think it will be interesting for you to see how he started out and how it all evolved into the point we are at right now, you should also check out black ben carlson cause it's crazy.
Since you read the annotation about Armand Hammer, i'd heavily recommend listening to Aethiopes by Billy Woods, who's one of the members of the duo alongside Elucid, easily a contender for album of the year, very abstract, gruesome lyricism
One of my favorite albums ever and i think it’s an example of a perfect album. Are u happy is probably my favorite track, that Cardigans sample use and him rapping over Gangsta Boo’s rapping. Hazard Duty Pay is one of the best sample usages ever. The production has a lot of layers and at times is really relaxing. It’s beautiful and epic and the chaos is made into something with a really great form. I didn’t like the album at first but it has so much sonic depth that it just unveils itself more every listen, as art. To mention the Armand Hammer disses, i was disappointed that two of my favorite artists were beefing (billy woods of AH didn’t engage in it but Elucid of AH did), but happily they were quick to get back on good terms and clear things up and the beef is over. Armand Hammer, and billy woods solo work, are still musthear in your journey through hip hop, as is Tkay Maidza who you briefly heard featured
Man, love this album. I find it flows so well, pushes and pulls to keep me engaged during the entire runtime. Had a great Saturday morning with a (way too big) cup of coffee, just watching this and doing nothing else. Thanks :)
It's so crazy because I always listened to this album front to back and I barely now noticed that some songs don't end where I thought they did lol. Also I used to work in construction and pipeline so I would also get hazard pay because I worked with dangerous chemicals and dangerous environments. Still I love this album a lot and the only gripe I have with it is that one of my favorite songs End Credits is slightly sped up on the offline version compared to the online one and I prefer the online version, other than that its an amazing album. PS. I'm still pissed I wasn't able to buy the vinyl for this 😢.
I thought tired, nervous and broke and fire emoji were one song with this really cool interlude LOL. I still like to think of it as one song since the transition is so flawless.
saw peggy for the Lp! tour a couple weeks ago. one of the best night so my life it was fucking crazy. i got to dap him up too glad your listening to this, peggy the goat and this is my favorite album of his
I remember my first listen being so similar to yours in the sense i just couldn't stop laughing, like it's almost hilarious how insanely great this album is and the more you listen to it the more you appreciate what jpeg brings to the table
Love the review! I agree with your interpretation about the second part of tired nervous and broke. I think it might be the throughline for the album. Contradictions inherent to being an artist in hip hop, the stress and the excellence that come out of those contradictions, the dissonance and harshness of the lifestyle, etc. I think it's interesting that he says "I don't wanna be stressed out for PROFIT". When I listened to the album, I heard that as a deliberate word choice. Not all societies, art forms, artists rely on profit to fund their next projects. Hip hop is a uniquely capitalist genre, largely because of exploitative record labels. "I feel like hip hop put a hit on me", constraining his creativity and his true individuaity while being his main form of personal expression. This album is like a hip hop representation of of the contradictions inherent in day to day life in 2022 capitalism like most of his work imo but I find that this one, by lacking a clear throughline, by having extremely unconvential sounds and song structures, blending genres, gender roles, audio qualities, etc really convey something truthful about what it means to be alive right now. It's hard to find your footing in a world where you need to.work to survive but that changes drastically often, and that tries to box you into one type of artist, one specific profession in order to more easily exploit you and extract profit from your work, your talent and passion.
Bob you HAVE to listen to some Flying Lotus at some point. His music is fantastic and he has worked with guys like Kendrick, Denzel Curry, MF DOOM, Earl, etc. You will not be disappointed by Cosmogramma, Los Angeles, Until the Queit Comes, and You're Dead!
