Hi Cassie, I groom from my home and have an aggresive shih tzu who comes to me for weekly maintenance baths and also grooming appointments. He is by far my most difficult dog as he was abused as a puppy. I have tried so many different approaches, and feel like this is the first video that has actually given me new ideas. Your demeanor with the tough babies is an inspiration.
@@stevennowak247 hi! Yes! I got him a muzzle and praised him a lot he doesn’t bite me anymore at all even when cutting his hair just took lots of patience love and treats!
This is THE BEST video I’ve seen of how to handle an aggressive dog while grooming!! You’re AMAZING and so patient!! I’ve been grooming 14 years and work with aggressive dogs ALOT and I know how difficult it can be! This was truly awesome thanks for the video!!
Thank you for being so gentle and kind to Buddy. I have watched other groomers on this platform who a rough and do not say a kind word. Great job, Buddy looks so cute.
Because they’re realistic. Why would you enable unnecessary behavior in dogs getting groomed. You don’t say “good boy” and talk sweet when they’re so far out of line.
This is AMAZING! I was spending hundreds every couple of months for my mixed breed (Lhasa apso/shih tzu) that bites. He's an old man that I adopted after his owner passed away. He's about 12 now. I finally bought the equipment to do it myself as his haircut costs more than mine! So informative, precise and logical. You're doing God's work. I can't thank you enough for the information. Wish us luck!
So glad I found your video. Our Lhasa was dropped by our groomer due to being aggressive.she has groomed him since 6 weeks. He is now 6 years and hates his feet and legs being touched. She can’t find workers and had to drop 80 dogs. We didn’t make the cut even though I assist her with his grooming to help calm him. I am nervous but have watched her for 2 years so I am buying stuff to do at home. I have spent over $500 on stuff so I am committed to doing this myself. You do an amazing job! Bless your patience.
Amazing training video! Your video helped me groom my little joy. He doesn’t like grooming, or anyone touching he’s leg or foot. I went by what you said, it’s all about what’s comfortable for them, and so I done what would’ve took me about a month to do into two days. I practice your method and it really works! Seriously! It worked! I am amazed that my two person project became to one person project and all I can say is we are all satisfied! Thank you! Thank you for giving me the courage and techniques to overcome this aggressive session for my little guy. He looks great! All thanks to you!
Thank you so much for sharing, I have 3 Shih tzu's and they are getting matted pretty bad between grooming so I would like to keep up at home between cuts. I'll definitely be using your tips and love how you keep the dogs calm with talking to them, I feel its key with my own at least. 💜💜💜
That’s so true about the dog having energy after a bath. I groom my dog, he’s well behaved because I got him use to everything bath related as a puppy. After his bath and blow dry he goes crazy with the zoomies lol. It’s a huge surge of energy he get. We always laugh and yell go Bentley go. He goes even faster. It’s hilarious 😂
I hope all groomers are like you, I have a teacup poodle and we’re always going too long without a cut and they she gets all matted. But when we take her to the groomer she isn’t the same dog for the next 3 days, she seems to have lost love. (She follows me around and is my literal baby beforehand) I just really hope behind closed doors all groomers are as patient and kind as you are. I see you had some problems on the paws and the dogs gonna do what the dogs gonna do, and you never got rough, or rude. Video made me tear up, keep up the amazing work ladies, you are the people who help this world ❤️
How old is your dog? Best advice is talk to your groomer of how often you should bring them. The MORE your bring them before matting occurs (6-8 weeks) the less your dog may become matted and also the happier they will be! If they are always matted at the groomers, they may have a negative experience bc it pulls on their skin, and their experience will always be negative.
@@GoneGrooming I'm learning my lesson on that. Although it is a little too late for me to start that now, being he is 12 and deaf, I certainly see the logic in this. So I really have to put the blame on myself.

Glad to see my Shih Tzu isn't the only one that doesn't like her paws messed with. I'm able to groom her but touching the paws are almost impossible. Took her to a groomer for the first time months ago just to get her nails clipped. Watching them instantly holding her down, her head behind someone's arm honestly made me scared they were going to hurt her. Clipped her nails very fast and the poor thing nails were bleeding. Recently gave her a shave and touching the paws are so much worse then before. Watching to hopefully get some tips and this video is very helpful! Awesome job!
Best advice I can give, is find the right groomer, and drop your dog off. Dogs work best w a groomer WITHOUT their owner. They have an attachment to you.

I've been grooming for 5 months and struggle with handling aggressive dogs. My shop accepts all dogs including aggressive dogs which is kind of daunting considering I really don't know how to handle them and I'm still learning the basic stuff. it's discouraging when you have to hand over a dog that's trying to bite you no matter what to a more experienced groomer to do them so this helps a lot.
You are amazing with dogs, what a great temperament you both have and courage, I take my hat to you. My bichon frisse is fearful and aggressive and now I can't find a groomer that can handle him. I wish you were here in Los Angeles, my dog is starting to look like a sheep and he's been rejected by the groomers twice and when I tried to groom him, he tried to bite me and put up a fight with such energy that was very upsetting for me. He is 14 years old and the vet is going to do tests to see if he can go under anesthesia to fix his teeth and get shaved. The cone is a great idea.
Really appreciate your patience w the dog. Thank you for your video. What are your thoughts about grooming loops causing trachea to collapse in small dogs? My Shorkie (shih tzu/ terrier mix) had Tracheal Collapse before we adopted her. TC is a degenerative condition where the dog eventually cannot breathe and must be put to sleep. Watching you lift the dog once with the loop and also seeing him pull against the loops made me cringe (no offense intended). My senior hates to be groomed, & I wonder if her TC might’ve begun during grooming visits long ago. Now we medicate her before grooming visits & insist that no grooming loop be used.
Trachea issues we deal with all the time. A lot of my videos, you'll see my "seat belt" version how we strap the dogs for grooming. With this video we did not. Other videos, we do!
Wonderful how you handle Buddy. My shih zhu has the same problems with aggression especially at groomers. Oliver has to keep the cone on so he doesnt get his face groomed. What type of mussel did you use and size. Thank you for doing this video, I known have a different prespective how to handle my sweet little boy.
Thank you so much. I have a shih tzu 6 yrs old and always groomed him myself but boy do i struggle. He is just like the little dog you did. I have learnt so much watching this vlog. One question is will cutting him before his bath not blunt my cutters?
I like you and I feel your struggle! It's so hard to groom your own! Cut before you can, but if they have dander, it can cause issue with your clippers. Bathe, FULLY dry will give you a better cut. If you have issues, msg me online- I get a lot of msgs, but ill try to help you!
A cone. Of course! Why didn't I think of it earlier? Thank you. My boy is not as reactive as this one, but even gently touching his feet in deep sleep has him waking and moving away. I don't have anyone to help so bought a muzzle, but it covers the ears too which I really need to pluck...
My 6 yr old Yorkie Stanley loves to be groomed ...my Lhasa apso was always so good .....now its I'm going up the stairs .... So I get worn out with the good boys ..HR later now let's do those feet 😂😂😂 exactly what I'm seeing here .looks just like my bailey.looks so handsome when he's done and I give them both so much praise... excellent job 👌❤️
Hi Cassie, while searching through the comments I finally saw you guys are based in NJ. My shih tzu and I live in Florida, he’s 12yo now and he’s having an incredibly difficult time with anyone getting close to his paws, particularly his front paws. He’s now being prescribed acepromazine sedative after the anti-anxiety trazadone didn’t face him it all. The acepromazine so far is also not facing him at all. He started off well before the drugs, letting me cut one nail at a time every few days. But as he gets older, not even the dog hanging harness or the swaddle work. My partner helps me try to get him calm enough to hold his paws for a little while at a time and he can do that okay. He tries to bite, but never puts enough pressure to cut through your skin. Anyway, seeing your video gave me hope after fearing being unable to find a solution that didn’t involve heavy dosing. I will drive anywhere to get him to find someone that could help solve the root of the problem or at least work with him. He’s an incredible fur baby and I just want him to be comfortable on his little paws again. Do you think there’s an opportunity for us to come to you and have him meet you guys? It would mean the absolute world to all of us.🙏💛 Edit: literally like 20 mins after posting this, my partner and I gathered all our strength, confidence, and faith, and tried one more time to cut Benji’s nails. After calming him again and again, but still continuing to get his nails trimmed for over an hour we SUCCEEDED. I don’t like that he still panicked a few times, but I’m happy, grateful, and incredibly relieved that they’re cut. We tried for SO long to get to this point, and tried so many different approaches. Thank you for posting this and sharing hope. Thank you so much.
Acepromazine is a bad idea, it's not so much a sedative as it just makes it so they can't react. They are still fully aware of what's going on and their fear of it is still there they just can't react. It also can lead to long term side effects. The reason it's still prescribed is most vets just don't know of anything else. Imagine being stuck in your head and unable to react to something you're afraid of or that you feel is threatening you.
@@SnewpTD absolutely, although it can help in emergency situations, thankfully we only gave it to him once, waited 1-2hrs, approached his paws, he growled, and we backed away haha he’s actually doing amazing now. he even lets us trim the paw hair with the clippers!
@@MsPurplegirl12 Also our boy doesn't like his nails trimmed so we figured out if we roll him on his back and the wife gives belly rubs while I use one of my wife nail files, the sand paper stick kind, he'll let me do all his toes. It takes a while to move the quik back so we do it a few times a week.
Very very good video, thank you for sharing your calm energy while showing us how to groom an aggressive dog. I've watched some where the poor dogs are held down and panting for breath (a knee to the neck came to mind) and I was horrified to see those. This video is a very positive way to groom and most importantly, a safe way for the dog and yourself. Thank you.
The best video thank you im in grooming school and this was perfect thank you . Please keep posting !! For us dog/grooming lovers ❤️❤️❤️❤️ #AllofUsMatter

I wish I had someone like you by me no o be would do my oliver he don’t like his feet touched at all but he also had a few bad experiences he wasn’t always this way
Great info and video for grooming a Shihtzu.. I have a Shihtzu and it's been very, very difficult to find a groomer. I'm thinking to sedate him at the vet for his grooming? Is the sedation recomendable for very aggressive dog??
My dog acts the exact same way, sometimes worse but I'll have to try giving him a long walk first. I groom him at home with my boyfriend (his cheerleader 😂). He's a rescue so I've never been sure what type of dog he is but he has the exact same body and color and demeanor of this shih tzu with a slightly longer muzzle so I'm thinking he's part shih tzu now! Makes sense because aside from grooming he's a little cuddle bug mush 🤗
I really need help with my shih tzu. He's 11 years old. He has always been terrified by grooming he bites, kicks and screams and puts up a fight. I used to be able to put myself through it since every groomer I went to declined us. The only person he trusts is me due to traumatic past. But he has been diagnosed with heart failure one year ago. He's on 3 types of medication and we have to avoid stressing him out and he's exercise intolerant now. He has a terrible cough because of fluid build up but he's a fighter and still kicking and always happy. He hasn't been groomed for 6 months and I am so scared to try. He has a lot of dirt around his eyes and he can barely see through his bangs. I asked my vet for help and even they told us that they can't do anything because of the stress factor. I really want him to feel comfortable. He overheats quickly because of his thick fur and medical conditions. Does ANYONE have tips or experience with sick dogs? Any help is welcome, I am desperate
My Senior Shih Tzu who has the same coloring and his name is BUDDY. My groomer never had a problem with him. We moved and have changed groomers. He is VERY uncooperative when it comes to his head and face. I am so worried of stressing him out at his age which is 15.
I wonder if she's in the minnesota area? Maybe in the twin cities area? But i know she's good, her calm demeanor and pointed directions kind of makes me want to be a groomer! 🤭😅
I think these groomers know their stuff. I have to say however that this is not an especially difficult dog. I've just spent 40 minutes trying to clip my daughter's shih Tzu's face. Made very little progress to be honest. I tried bribery, cajoling and food. It just wants to chew your arm off up to the elbow. I gave up eventually because doggo was becoming a bit distressed..... as was I! Have to go to the Vetinarys for a whiff of anaesthetic I think; £400.00 in the UK; marvellous!
I used to groom dogs like this one and even worse. Had a Saint Bernard almost give me a concussion. I’d rather spend hours hand scissoring a standard poodle than dealing with these types of dogs again. There are groomers who love the challenge and working with the difficult and aggressive, for me, it became too mentally exhausting. A lot of the time they also aren’t worth the price of the grooming.
You are so sweet! My mini poodle had a horrible experience at the groomers, and since then it's been so hard to get him to the groomers. By any chance where are you located?
You all seem so sweet! I've seen another groomer online that has a very strict, complaining, "NO!" attitude, and the dogs really don't seem to respond to that :/
Thanks for watching. Groomers vary with emotions. In my advice, the dog doesn't know what's going on during grooming. In my experience, dogs respond better with positivity with guidance and coaching during grooms.
@@GoneGrooming absolutely. Thank you for your reply :) I'm planning on becoming a veterinary nurse, so there's some grooming modules. These types of videos give me an idea of what to expect!
You ladies were wonderful with him! I have 4, 2 of which are much like this guy. I tried to watch a different video from another groomer before watching one, and I could not even make it through her video. I was upset for the dog in her video and would be heartbroken if anyone treated my little guys that way. Yours was the next video and a complete opposite of the other. This is how I would want my fur babies to be groomed. Can I ask where you are located? I would bring all 4 of mine to you.
Not a criticism in any way bit why didn't you clip the front of him to the Grooming arm? Like with a groomers helper? Honest question, as I've started grooming myself and am curious 🙂
my pom shihtzu wasnt groomed yesterday, it made me a bit annoyed that they didnt use any muzzle or cones and work on the dog, her furs really long and i cant groom her myself too, i will try this later, thank you!
Wow hands down, thank you so much for this video ( class) I’m a new groomer and today had my first shi tzu he was aggressive and I have to call the owner because I couldn’t handle it, never let me touch his face 😔 and since I’m new I’m still missing a lot of tools to work with So most of this breed are aggressive?
No, they are not aggressive. They are wonderful dogs. They attach to their people and can become nervous with strangers. If a shih tzu isn't familiar with you or doesn't feel comfortable, they won't feel safe. It's best to begin this with a regular groomers as a puppy or just groom them yourself. If that's not possible, finding a groomer they feel comfortable with, makes a huge difference. It's all about relationships and trust with them.
I'm here cause I wonder how our groomer grooms our cray cray dog 😭😂 when I can barely touch his paw without him biting me. My hand is literally filled with holes FKNFKDNDKDNKAGKSNA
Sorry to hear! Theres 2 diff types of sedatives. Those who are loopy and those who just lay. My advice is find a groomer that will talk with your vet about options!
My groomer is getting upwards of $65 after tip so I could save a lot by doing it myself. Unfortunately, I am alone and have no one to assist with grooming. My dog is actually a bichon-poodle mix but she acts like this dog. Except my dog doesn’t bite, she just tries to makes you think she will. Re tranquilizer: I wonder how many groomers sneak medication in.
My dog has to be knocked out and he is a shih tzu he doesn't like the groomer near his paws and ears. I have used some dog ear wipes on him and hes let me touch his ears the clean them. Why me and not the groomer

My boy is not as reactive as this one, but even gently touching his feet in deep sleep has him waking and moving away. I don't have anyone to help so bought a muzzle, but it covers the ears too which I really need to pluck...
You are absolutely amazing!!! Can you show how you pluck the ear hairs?
It would mean the absolute world to all of us.🙏💛
Edit: literally like 20 mins after posting this, my partner and I gathered all our strength, confidence, and faith, and tried one more time to cut Benji’s nails.
@@MsPurplegirl12 I'm glad. We only want the best for our babies so I try to help people stay informed.
@@SnewpTD that’s awesome! i love that i think I’ll give that a try as well-thanks for sharing the info, always good to stay informed!
Are you located in Florida/Orlando/Tampa area by any chance?
Very very good video, thank you for sharing your calm energy while showing us how to groom an aggressive dog. I've watched some where the poor dogs are held down and panting for breath (a knee to the neck came to mind) and I was horrified to see those. This video is a very positive way to groom and most importantly, a safe way for the dog and yourself. Thank you.
9:50... how/what are you grabbing...?
I wish she was in my area I would send my dog to her for sure! He’s another difficult shih mix.
Great job!!! He’s really pretty sweet.
The best video thank you im in grooming school and this was perfect thank you . Please keep posting !! For us dog/grooming lovers ❤️❤️❤️❤️ #AllofUsMatter
God bless you. This is so awesome
You are the Groom Whisperer! Your skill level and patience is phenomenal! I wish you were in the Atlanta area.🙂
I wish!
My Grady is a new rescue. I have had him 8 weeks now and he is overdue for a grooming. Groomers are in Very short supply where I live. Oh, boy I hope I can do it. Fingers crossed. Thank you Cassie for your advice on Keep Calm!
Thank you so much xxx
omg.. are you located in NJ!?
I have both shitzu n Yorkie. That Shitzu is very well behaved.😊😊 Seriously my Yorkie will be going nuts.
I wish I had someone like you by me no o be would do my oliver he don’t like his feet touched at all but he also had a few bad experiences he wasn’t always this way
Touch feet daily or all the time!!! with time they will get used to it
Cara vcs são profissionais top fizeram tudo sem o agredir sem machucar ele coisa que muitos não faz assim vcs são exemplos para mim show.
Great info and video for grooming a Shihtzu.. I have a Shihtzu and it's been very, very difficult to find a groomer. I'm thinking to sedate him at the vet for his grooming? Is the sedation recomendable for very aggressive dog??
If you had a groomer tell you your dog is aggressive, then talk to your vet.
@9:16 he looks so defeated lmaooo
What state is this groomer in? And what city?
I wonder if she's in the minnesota area? Maybe in the twin cities area? But i know she's good, her calm demeanor and pointed directions kind of makes me want to be a groomer! 🤭😅
I am Nj
Hi cassie I want to ask what kind or razor are you using?
I think these groomers know their stuff. I have to say however that this is not an especially difficult dog. I've just spent 40 minutes trying to clip my daughter's shih Tzu's face. Made very little progress to be honest. I tried bribery, cajoling and food. It just wants to chew your arm off up to the elbow. I gave up eventually because doggo was becoming a bit distressed.....
as was I! Have to go to the Vetinarys for a whiff of anaesthetic I think; £400.00 in the UK; marvellous!
Where are you located? 😭 you are such a pro! Most groomers do not have the patience or are willing to work with my pup.
Same here.
NJ Near Lakehurst Naval base
I used to groom dogs like this one and even worse. Had a Saint Bernard almost give me a concussion. I’d rather spend hours hand scissoring a standard poodle than dealing with these types of dogs again. There are groomers who love the challenge and working with the difficult and aggressive, for me, it became too mentally exhausting. A lot of the time they also aren’t worth the price of the grooming.
You are so sweet! My mini poodle had a horrible experience at the groomers, and since then it's been so hard to get him to the groomers. By any chance where are you located?
New Jersey
Ohmygosh what happened to your toy poodle?
You all seem so sweet! I've seen another groomer online that has a very strict, complaining, "NO!" attitude, and the dogs really don't seem to respond to that :/
Thanks for watching. Groomers vary with emotions. In my advice, the dog doesn't know what's going on during grooming. In my experience, dogs respond better with positivity with guidance and coaching during grooms.
@@GoneGrooming absolutely. Thank you for your reply :) I'm planning on becoming a veterinary nurse, so there's some grooming modules. These types of videos give me an idea of what to expect!
@@robynhab I think I know who you're talking about... I agree with Cassie
You’re amazing.
It's always the small ones 🤣
Hi cassie have you a video how to clip a shih tzu nails please x
You ladies were wonderful with him! I have 4, 2 of which are much like this guy. I tried to watch a different video from another groomer before watching one, and I could not even make it through her video. I was upset for the dog in her video and would be heartbroken if anyone treated my little guys that way. Yours was the next video and a complete opposite of the other. This is how I would want my fur babies to be groomed. Can I ask where you are located? I would bring all 4 of mine to you.
oh that shih tzu is identical to mine, what clippers are you using, oh my goodness my dog does the exact same thing
Amazing, you know exactly what youa re doing
Not a criticism in any way bit why didn't you clip the front of him to the Grooming arm? Like with a groomers helper? Honest question, as I've started grooming myself and am curious 🙂
Good job!
my pom shihtzu wasnt groomed yesterday, it made me a bit annoyed that they didnt use any muzzle or cones and work on the dog, her furs really long and i cant groom her myself too, i will try this later, thank you!
I need to learn patience. You are good 👍👍
Where are you located
Nj
Great job ladies
Where are you located?
Wow hands down, thank you so much for this video ( class) I’m a new groomer and today had my first shi tzu he was aggressive and I have to call the owner because I couldn’t handle it, never let me touch his face 😔 and since I’m new I’m still missing a lot of tools to work with
So most of this breed are aggressive?
No, they are not aggressive. They are wonderful dogs. They attach to their people and can become nervous with strangers. If a shih tzu isn't familiar with you or doesn't feel comfortable, they won't feel safe. It's best to begin this with a regular groomers as a puppy or just groom them yourself. If that's not possible, finding a groomer they feel comfortable with, makes a huge difference. It's all about relationships and trust with them.
Correct, they're not all aggressive. I will be doing an update video on BUDDY soon. He is a TOTALLY diff dog since he's had many sessions with me.
I'm here cause I wonder how our groomer grooms our cray cray dog 😭😂 when I can barely touch his paw without him biting me. My hand is literally filled with holes FKNFKDNDKDNKAGKSNA
The reason i here most of the pet shop/grooming decline my shih tzu 😞😞😞😩
Same issue with this adorable dog
Sorry to hear! Theres 2 diff types of sedatives. Those who are loopy and those who just lay. My advice is find a groomer that will talk with your vet about options!
I adopted mine from shelter at end of Dec. Trying to trim him is awful. He will growl and has snapped at us. Idk what to do
Take long walks daily, you should see an improvement in a few weeks.
What size muzzle did you use?
I honestly don't know the size. it's a huge pack of 6. The reason I don't know the size, is I try my best not to use muzzles in general.
Am getting mine but let’s hope it’s not aggressive
Do u charge more for these difficult grooms?
Yes
Nu i-ați smuls parul din urechiușe ?Si glandele curățate ?Cat a fost de neastâmpărat ,tot l ați făcut frumos!Salutari de la Olly,❤️mea!
I wonder if this dog has been hurt during grooming before.
Please tell me after his owner watched this video they doubled your tip!
How do you help a dogs who has callas on paws
Keep going. Paw butter works
Great groomer!
Thank you!
This is my dog & the reason I have to self groom…..I hate it 🥲
My groomer is getting upwards of $65 after tip so I could save a lot by doing it myself.
Omggg this looks exactly like my bella. She doesnt like her paws touch for sure..
U are awesome. Smooth. I cringe. Thinking. They w. Be. Cut. In the process. I was hoping. Buddy got to keep his longer hair on his face.
He’s an angel compared to mine. Mine needs-anesthesia. My groomer banned her from coming back 😢
My dog has to be knocked out and he is a shih tzu he doesn't like the groomer near his paws and ears. I have used some dog ear wipes on him and hes let me touch his ears the clean them. Why me and not the groomer
