Uptil 10th grade I used to score almost 100% but never really got happy and losing even one mark made me feel disappointed. And no my family members had no problem if I lost a few marks. They were happy with 90%. But I always felt I didn't give enough. But there were times when I couldn't understand certain questions and had to struggle before writing the answer. Think a lot, trying to remember page and stuff and if I accidentally get a 1 mark for that unlearned answer, I got a weird sense of happiness even if I only got 15/20 in that subject. No one understands how toppers feel while losing that one mark. It's not overreacting. We really feel we should have put more effort and regret is what comes out as tears. But yes I still don't know what I want and still answered jee and messed it up. In India if you score well, you get social pressure to become Doctor, engineer or CA. No one has asked me what I want to do except my parents. All just assume I will be doctor. Another thing is as a topper until 10th I never felt threatened when other toppers scored more than me, I was happy for them. but if a lot of average students did at the same time, then it made me feel insecure. This happened only once during board Eng prelims though. For some reason I score only 60 out of 80 while others got 70+. Still topped 10th boards with 94%.
Indian job market and education sector is fiercely competitive. The bars are REALLY high, and just a graduation is absolutely not enough if one is looking for a decent job offer. We study a lot. Yeah there are now plenty of opportunities for creative students who are good at graphics, design, etc. but that market is competitive too. India has a huge population with an average age less than 30. So the pressure is on since school and in many ways, rightly so. But one should follow their passion and hearts calling. Money or titles aren’t everything in life. Enjoying the work you do is extremely important!
Time on creativity and parents letting you to discover your creative side??? NO NO NO. We don't do that here in India LOL. It's straight up a Doctor or an Engineer or you are bound to hear them nag about their difficult financial status all your life and be guilty. You never see a broad minded society here. There might be parents like that which you rarely find. My father was such. But, not my mother and my school was hell. But, there is a clear reason for it. Parents here are basically the middle class who are striving everyday for money. For children who have seen their family in such a situation will obviously want a very rewarding and secure future. And in a way, I am proud of my brothers and sister who have pushed themselves into reaching great heights.
As a student who generally does well in classes, most of my friends are average - when they ask me how I got so much marks - especially in English - they assume I spend all the time studying - when I say I don't even study as much as them, they get triggered - which is understandable, but I'm telling the truth! So yeah, I'm on the opposite side on this video, but it is hilarious...
