You took the words out of my mind because that's exactly the experience i have with many of my favorite youtube creators . Future me has to rewatch this video
This explains a lot. Why I am always looking for new webcomics, why I'm sad when the artist gives up, or just disappears. It always feels odd when I find a comic, read it, reach the most recent page, and... Uploaded 5 years ago. Check what the artist last posted... 5. Years. Ago. Oh. Oh..... I dig. Seems this artist gave up because of unauthorized reposts on other sites with no credit given. This one just up and disappeared. Oh good, this one made a post recently saying they just lost their password, thank goodness. It just feels odd looking at a comic or account of someone who left long ago.
Another example is a series I've been reading is giving up and doing a full universe reset at the end of the current chapter, because they now hate the old story and don't enjoy making it like they used to years ago. Sad, but I get it.
Michael, you truly are a modern day philosopher. For a while there, I was concerned that your long-form videos were a relic of the past. An educative media-art form made financially inviable by society's proclivity for shallow, bite-sized content. While I am happy to enjoy your content in any shape--these long-form videos allow for deeper, more gratifying thought exploration. Your perspective of the world and your flair for fascinating analogical parallels have uniquely equipped you to communicate complex, abstract concepts in such an entertaining way. I am certain these videos are now in 'passion project' territory, but please know they have stoked within me an ever-burning curiosity of the intersection between philosophy, science, and the tragic beauty of the human condition.
Oh I feel the same exact way friend. I also admire your dedication to having a colorful lexicon. It made for an entertaining read to say the very least.
i was diagnosed with major depressive disorder about 4 years ago, and the thing that both upsets and intrigues me the most about my own behavior is the desire to simultaneously do something and do nothing at the same time there's an ever-present lust for something different yet not enough willpower or energy to follow through with any of that, like two magnets of the same polarity being pushed against each other, so i always end up with the path of least resistance i'm not any closer to an explanation as to why i feel so incongruous with myself in so many ways, but thanks for giving me something to contemplate
Life is a battle against entropy. It either gets you now or you fight it and stave it off so you can live as full a life as possible. It’s hard, but I think fighting and trying is worth it in the end.
One fix for the problem: when daydreaming or looking forward to new possibilities, simultaneously imagine the obstacles thatll get in your way before you can and prepare for those deeply. Helps motivations and stops demotivation easier
Your description of the tug-of-war between ambition and inhibition resonates with me. I hope you can derive comfort in knowing that you're not not alone in the struggle to find meaning, in addition to overcoming such a debilitating condition. I wish you all the best, Windmill Hills!
This is super relatable. I wonder if it's to do with the fact that we have access to enough stimulation in our pockets that our brain considers it "good enough" so we don't bother doing anything new
Bro I’ve been watching vsauce videos too, it was weird. I was really aching for some long form mind bending video like this. Everything has become so fast and boring lately
The Godfather of youtube videos that provide information. The production keeps you locked in, only becoming unfocused when you have to rewind to make sure you heard a mind-boggling fact correctly.. Bittersweet that we can't have vids like this drop more often!
I'm honored to be a speck of flour among all the others here today- to you reading the comments right now, hello! If this is the only time we will ever cross paths, I hope you have a nice life, whoever you are. You are loved, and you deserve to know that!
Michael, this video and the chair video both scared me so much. Ever since I was a kid I've been troubled by existential crises, like the problem of existing forever, or ceasing to exist. When I think about it, it fills my chest with a dark, viscous, orange dread that I can't help but try to run away from by just not thinking about it. Many times I feel the urge to click off of your videos but you somehow manage to pull me back in before I do. I think in a way you help me confront these feelings in small steps, and I want to thank you from the bottom of my soul for everything that you do.
Sorry to dump this onto a random comment... I too dread existing forever. The void, the nothingness that would come after everything I care for ends; after everything new that I could care for stops existing. Just the eternity of the empty universe that comes with the heat death of the universe and the fact that you'd have to live through it. This video however (along with your comment) finally lets me put a finger on the why of it. The real reason it's so scary is because you stop getting to experience new things. You can't go anywhere without ground to walk on, you can't converse without people to talk to... If we're stopping short of the very abstract and far future, and stick to humanity, it just stops being entertaining to be entertained. There's only so many times you can experience the same thing before it starts getting old. What if experiencing new things would stop being a new feeling too?
@@RandomBruhDon’t you worry, after you die (now I’m not a God, but if you’re not religious that’s the closest of the theory you’ll get) you just return to the state you were in before you were born, it’s nothingness, it’s not a void, a void is black and seeing colors or anything is still existing, nonexistence is nothing like that in the most literal sense possible.
@@RandomBruh I welcome it, it's comforting to know others share these feelings. If we were to have a part of ourselves in the way that we're familiar live on forever I could only hope that there would be ways to overcome these problems. I dread not existing but I think more than that I dread wanting to not exist.
@@RandomBruh My personal un-grounded in anything belief in death is that I will certainly cease to exist the way I know it. My memories and personality may be erased, but consciousness is a more abstract and fuzzy concept. Furthermore, forever is an unfathomably long time (of which I lose perception of after death) Thus, in our wild and chaotic universe, if there's any non-zero probability that the conditions will ever be met for my consciousness to take shape once more, then over the course of eternity it's guaranteed. And that point in time will be something I'll arrive at instantly from my perspective, as whatever shape that new "me" might be. So basically reincarnation, but based on probability, with that highly improbable point of reincarnation definitely being unfathomable amounts of time beyond the existence of earth
@@skinnymarauder333 I think you should look at it from a perspective of "I have a limited time to experience this one life i have to the fullest extent" Instead of constantly wasting your valuable time about what might happen after that valuable time runs out. Live your life, experience as many things as you can and want. You will not be able to experience everything or see all the possibilities in your mind, but you did your best. And that's all that matters.
I was at the Dollar Store the other day, and made a joke about the boomerangs on display. About a minute later, some kid walks in with his mom and also makes note of the boomerangs, but his mom told him he couldn't get one. I looked back at them and said "Let the kid have a boomerang!" The mom rolled her eyes and moved on, but later when I was checking out, they were right behind me again and the kid was talking about how excited he was that his new boomerang came in a three pack. My first thought was "I have changed the course of history." According to this video, I'm not wrong.
It’s not often when I watch a video multiple times back to back, but this is certainly one of those times. We’re always moving on to new things because they’re there, because we can, or because we are curious. We’re always moving on because what’s out there is simply… next. Fascinating.
This video genuinely had me pondering the meaning of life. What it IS to exist in this world, in this universe. What our actions will do, what does liking a video that already have thousands do. Thank you Michael.
Michael, you made me cry with this one. With meditation, I had realised I was running away from me into autopilot, and I chose to continue willingly because this was the way to not get mad, to be most productive, and yet being called out for it made me cry.
I've been watching you since i was 10. I am now 19 and just wanted to say that you have genuinely imbued me with a life long passion and desire to explore the relms of natural science, art and philosophy. Thank you for all you've done Michael- it's always a treat when you put something out.
You don't have a passion, you just got hooked on the ADHD-style pop science presentation that this person has down to a formula. Unless yu're taking notes and following the sources, you're not exploring anything.
@humanharddrive1 who are you to put limits and say what is and isnt a passion? Note taking isn't all that learning is. I don't have to know everything about a topic or have extensive essays prepared for them to say I'm passionate about it. Saying someone isn't actually passionate because of some arbitrary rule is ridiculous and the sort of gatekeeping that pushes so many people away from the sciences.
@@humanharddrive1 Imao chillax bro. I've always looked further into the citations in the description, prepping for an undergrad in neuroscience next year (although I've never been able to fully absorb 100% of an entire video, so I see your point!). But honestly, Michael's videos are a huge part of what sparked my interest in the first place, and I find his approach genuinely inspiring. That being said, even if I never really took the initiative, I'd rather have been exposed to self-experiential pop science than the equivalent of brain rot. I respect the intensity, though!
I literally felt my hearth go grazy when I saw this upluoad. I dont remember being this excited for a long time. Your channel actually changed my view of the world and I cant wait to wacth the video and tankyou for doing what you are doing!!!!
i struggle a lot with existential dread and the fear of death and what lies beyond and all that. this was a pretty hard watch, as it really set me off. but i think it was worth it. there's not much i can do escape life, death, and existence. i can't run from big questions forever. it really helps to have you here to help me think through them while having fun, michael. thank you!
When I saw the thumbnail I thought "Oh hey a new old video I haven't watched" which slightly confused me because I pretty much watched all of his videos. Then I saw when it was uploaded and freaked out
3 years later and Michael casually walks back into our lives like he never left. The same voice. The same perfect pacing. The same feeling of sitting down and suddenly questioning everything about existence. It’s not just a video it’s a reminder of why so many of us fell in love with learning in the first place. Welcome back, Michael. The internet feels right again.
Truly inspiring to see a video from you again and not just you-toks. The internets intellectual has returned to deliver another romp through thought provoking topics and enigmatic insights. It's brilliant to see you expanding the minds around you with thorough discussion once more.
Takes a break from long form content for two years, and starts the video telling me how wide a piece of refined flour is. And just like that, it feels like he never left. :)
You’re so right about us craving unsettledness, not knowing what’s going to happen next is something I really like and we all secretly or openly do. Maybe not for super important things like giant decisions that will impact our lives forever, or our health, but for a lot of things that might even be dangerous, it is fun.

11:35 this part is actually really deep and meaningful!
20:06 "The world is not our home, it's fuel for the fire up here where we really live"
That quote right there can change lives
It's so beautiful I might include it in a new poem

This is a perfect example of text that you can tell was written by a human and not AI despite its complex, high-level language.

I'm so happy to see you back bro 😁
i was diagnosed with major depressive disorder about 4 years ago, and the thing that both upsets and intrigues me the most about my own behavior is the desire to simultaneously do something and do nothing at the same time
there's an ever-present lust for something different yet not enough willpower or energy to follow through with any of that, like two magnets of the same polarity being pushed against each other, so i always end up with the path of least resistance
i'm not any closer to an explanation as to why i feel so incongruous with myself in so many ways, but thanks for giving me something to contemplate
Life is a battle against entropy. It either gets you now or you fight it and stave it off so you can live as full a life as possible. It’s hard, but I think fighting and trying is worth it in the end.
this.

This really triggered my sonder and I am happy that it came from a Vsauce video comment 😊
You too bro !!
right back at you!
Hi, thanks! you too buddy
Furthermore, forever is an unfathomably long time (of which I lose perception of after death)
Thus, in our wild and chaotic universe, if there's any non-zero probability that the conditions will ever be met for my consciousness to take shape once more, then over the course of eternity it's guaranteed.
And that's all that matters.
thought i'd never see one of these again in my lifetime

My month was improved 100x just because of this video. I’m not kidding. I’ve been waiting for years for this day.
I was at the Dollar Store the other day, and made a joke about the boomerangs on display. About a minute later, some kid walks in with his mom and also makes note of the boomerangs, but his mom told him he couldn't get one.
I looked back at them and said "Let the kid have a boomerang!"
The mom rolled her eyes and moved on, but later when I was checking out, they were right behind me again and the kid was talking about how excited he was that his new boomerang came in a three pack.
My first thought was "I have changed the course of history."
According to this video, I'm not wrong.

It’s not often when I watch a video multiple times back to back, but this is certainly one of those times. We’re always moving on to new things because they’re there, because we can, or because we are curious. We’re always moving on because what’s out there is simply… next. Fascinating.

SO back!
@@humanharddrive1You have to be a special kind of loser to type this comment.
literally same here
@humanharddrive1 who are you to put limits and say what is and isnt a passion?
I didn’t think this day would come. An old school full length Vsausce video 😭
