When I was 4, I had a best friend who lived down the street. She had one of those big, cheap tins with lots of watercolors (1950’s). We would go to her room and mix those paints for hours. Every time we had some weird gray mixture, we would intone, “Ah, the final touch!” and mix a bunch of some new color in. We never actually painted, but just spent hours mixing colors, which fascinated our 4-year-old selves. That’s how I learned how to mix colors.

Yes, please do the direct comparison! I have tubes of W&N gouache, but haven’t had the courage to dive in to gouache painting yet (one reason I love watching your videos!). I do have Schmincke pan watercolors, which are amazingly pigment dense. I would love to see your W&N vs. Schmincke gouache comparison 😁

Delft is a city in Holland famous for its (Delft) blue and white pottery. Also the where Vermeer worked and is buried. Worth a visit! Schminke are my favourite gouache.

I have Titanium Gold Ochre, English Red, and Helio Turquoise in the Schmincke watercolor. They look identical, but of course it's hard to tell. Would love to see the watercolor and gouache side by side! Delft Blue is PB 60, also known as Indanthrone blue (or Anthraquinone in M. Graham as you mentioned). Delft and Titanium Gold Ochre/Venetian Red are nice complimentary mixers!

You pronounced that "Delft" completely right, at least from a German standpoint 🥰 Though, the Dutches might disagree 😅 I got that Delft Blue on my watercolour palette, too, just like at least 4 or 5 other ones and I love them all, I just need to find the the time to actually use them and try them out some more. Love the colours themselves and all the mixes. They look awesome❣

I definitely want to see a video of both sets of guaches used together. As for replicating your current W&N colors in the Schminke for comparison, I personally would be more interested in something like a set that rounds out the Schminke ones you have to something like a set of warm/cool set of primaries that fit your style, plus maybe 2 more. Perhaps a maximum of about eight would really illustrate how much you (that is to say one) can do with that limited set in a good brand.

I have already invested a good bit in WN gouache, so won’t likely be buying any other high-end brand right now. But when I’m ready, I def want to try Schmincke gouache. Steve on The Mind of Watercolor rated it his number 1, not bc of performance or quality (compared to WN) but bc they have a bigger color range with more high lightfastness colors. 😊

After 10+ years of watercolor experience I got gouache from Schmincke, and love it. Delft blue (which is anthraquinone blue, btw) is very deep and has an almost petroleum opalescence. Their watercolor version is quite similar, but not that impressive.
Although gouache is fun, gouache technique still breaks my brains.

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I’m loving the schmincke gouache so much, except the white. And I was super surprised by the Shinhan gouache which I got at the same time. Both are permanent in my collection.

    Beautiful!
I've been thinking about the idea of being inspired by the colours on your palette lately. I've avoided my watercolours for a long time. I told myself that it was because I hadn't learned how to use them yet, but then I randomly bought a hot pink and suddenly fell in love with just playing. A few more "just cuz they're pretty" colours later and I'm playing with my watercoulours all the time and realizing that I hate the "recommended" palette I've been avoiding for nearly 5 years. I think you need a balance of colours you love and useful colours, but I'm having so much more fun with watercolours now that I'm starting with fun colours and slowly (very slowly) figuring out what colours I can add to get a good mix of colours for the type of paintings I'm currently enjoying.
Speaking of gorgeous colours, that helio turquoise is on my wish list!
And, yes, please do the direct comparison!

The good and the bad of Schmincke, They make wonderful products! They cost a LOT! High quality is expensive, that is just the way it is. Since this is from 2 years ago I assume you did buy more and decided that you would spend your money elsewhere? I am struggling with even the question do I need to go back down that rabbit hole ? Do I need any gouache paints at all?? I have plenty of watercolors and I am trying to get all of them into working palettes. I know that some like to work from tubes, but I just prefer to let them dry out! This is another question for the use of gouache. I learned to use paint from tubes, do I really want to learn how to again? Or paint gouache from dried pans? Gahhh! I should just go to bed! Thanks for sharing and leaving this video for all of us to watch. I will need to look for a follow-up video? G'Night Sarah.

I just got some Horadam gouache for Christmas and birthday recently as my schmincke akademie gouache supply is dwindling. I got that yellow you have and a cool yellow as well as the vermillion! Didn’t get a blue which makes things interesting. I could use an Akademie blue but decided to challenge myself. Luckily I have a ginger cat to paint!😂 Only other colours im letting myself use is W&N burnt umber and Akademie zinc white.
I must say though, I’ve been painting with gouache for over a year now and am still REALLY struggling!😮‍💨 like literally ZERO improvement. I started with watercolours over a decade ago and after I finished school and wasn’t forced to use acrylics for art class, I’ve completely ignored opaque mediums because acrylics dry too fast, oils dry too slow (and turps gives me headaches) and I didn’t know that gouache existed😅 so wrapping my brain around opacity in paints has been a difficult journey! A fun journey though, so I don’t plan on giving up! 💪
My mom does fur textures really well with her oils, definitely going to ask her to teach me to see if her techniques can translate into gouache because truly, the fur she paints is GODLY. I want to snuggle her paintings, that’s how good she is 😂

Yes, please! I would love to see a video comparing the W&N and Schmincke in that limited landscape palette you did earlier, with five colours plus white ( I am thinking about the one with a turquoise, a preussian blue, a cadmium free yellow, a perylene green and a red i sadly have forgotten the name on..but of course as it is your palette you know what I mean ;-) ).

    Hey Sarah :)
I was very curious about how you'd react to the Schmincke Horadam Gouache!
Till now I only own a few of them but a lemon-y yellow it very far up on my list of "neeeeeed it soon".
Loved seeing some colors I don't own being swatched! Also yes please to comparisons. :>

    Hi, Sarah!
Thank you for the videos…such gifts to us!
Just a little FYI, “Delft” blue may come from the “Delft” china/porcelain that has been so famous for decades, if not more. And it’s that color of blue & white. 😊
    I hope that helps!
    Blessings to you!
    Jacqui

I knew you would love Horadam Gouache. I haven't tried every single brand of gouache, but the minute I tried those out, I decided not to buy anything else. It would be interesting to see what you think when you compare them to W&N.

Great review ! Although Schminke gouache tubes are costly they keep really well in the tube for ages, unlike W & N which often set like rocks, so that makes the price worthwhile to me. Have you done a video on brushes for gouache? I keep a separate set for gouache that are more robust and less soft than my w/c brushes and would be interested in your views and recommendations.

I have not done a specific brush review..I tend to abuse my brushes and the names wear off quickly..I only know a couple of the names still!

Maybe you are being too hard on yourself. I believe gouache, like acrylic, is pretty tough on brushes compared to watercolour - hence my separate set. The more vigorous mixing and the nature of the pigment killed off some expensive favourites of mine before I became this nerdy. Keep up the good work and happy painting.

@@atelierthhun1165 I do have brushes that I only use for watercolor, nice ones I don't want to ruin. And my oil / acrylic brushes are on their own too. I use cheaper flat wash brushes for gouache (and sometimes my older less important watercolor brushes)

Glad to hear you're cherishing your best brushes. If you do run out of and can't get the inexpensive flat wash brushes we both seem to use I will happily share my stash with you.

You’ve blessed us with another video so soon! The painting was gorgeous, I loved the palette, too, but would have been intimidated not to have the ability to make a whole slew of greens! I’m the queen of convenience greens and mixed greens on top lol, can never have enough greens!
