I’m now 72 years , when at 8 year old I am so clearly cognisant of my Uncle Jim McKenzie (Inverness)served with a Gurkha Regiment in Burma. His limited expressions of the very nasty conflict clearly clarified my mind from them and the loyalty and braveness.
They were the best , hardest and committed Jungle fighters. God bless them all.

My late father-in-Law fought alongside the Gurkhas during WW2. He said VERY little about the fighting, (& his capture), but he said he has never known Soldiers like them for bravery - they were wonderful soldiers.

Many who actually knew what they were talking about were horrified as it meant there was nothing in it for Nepal any more, so why would Nepal be happy to lose Gurkha pay and pensions that were previously going back to Nepal?
Nepal has already said it will end Gurkha recruiting as a result, and that shouldn't have surprised anyone.

@@daphnethurlow5388 They are, under the same immigration / visa rules as anyone else - one of the many reasons why recruiting Gurkhas is no longer beneficial to Nepal and their government have said they will end recruitment of Gurkhas.
The ghurka's are amazing fighters. My uncle served in Borneo in the second world war with them. They were called Wingates Chindits and my uncle said they were the fiercest and most loyal soldiers he's ever had the honour to fight alongside. GOD BLESS THE GHURKA REGIMENTS. ❤

Sorry, but that's badly wrong. Some Gurkha regiments and other Indian Army units were part of the Chindits, a brigade force that was half British Army and half Indian Army, commanded by Maj Gen Orde Wingate.

@@John-G Spelling police out again. It's not wrong at all. THEY WERE KNOWN AS 'WINGATES CHINDITS". I've listened to lots of stories about them when my uncle was alive. You are correct about there being Indian regiments fighting alongside too. I just assumed older people would know that. My mistake. It seems you like to nit pick.

The other units, British and Indian, weren't "fighting alongside" the Chindits, they were all IN the Chindits.

To anyone who's ever been in or knows the military, there's a VAST difference between being "alongside", being "with" and being "in".

I pity any fool who decides to attack it then. Gurkhas are the absolute creme de la creme. I hope they finally got paid their pensions etc properly. I visited it and loved touring it .
They've been paid the same pensions and on the same TACOS as Brits since 2007. As a result, since there's nothing in it for Nepal anymore and Britain broke the 1949 tri-partite agreement unilaterally, Nepal has unsurprisingly said that it will end Gurkha recruiting, although it hasn't yet said when.
That was smashing. Thank you! How smart and vigorous are the Gurkhas. My father admired and respected them so much having fought alongside them in WW2. It's great to have them here - especially at Windsor. Their music is lovely too!

I have a book on the Battle of Cassino which has a photo of Gurkhas charging downhill, silhouetted against the sun and flashing their kukris. Decades after I first read it, that image sticks in my mind. All I can say is, if that's what you're up against, you're only getting out of it dead or with soiled pants.

I've heard so much about the courage and the bravery of the King's Gurkhas. They are also recruited by the Singapore government, who values them now and from their service to the British in Singapore. They are respected, yet feared by the citizens. They are dedicated to those they serve.

We the British need these amazing fearless Soldiers, maybe more than we did in the battle against any enemy that have tried to kill or enslave us. Our silent cunning enemies have infiltrated every City, Town and village in Great Britain, and the Powers to be have allowed this to happen. I hope this is a sign, that one of the most feared Soldiers in the World have moved into this Fortress, and, have orders to be on hand, when the Enemies are more than ready to strike the British. Gurkhas haven't been in the British Army for 200 years - up until 1949 they were part of the British Indian Army.

@@patriciadavis2506 They've been part of the British Army since the Tripartite Agreement in 1949.
We've now broken that agreement, trashing it totally, so that Nepal is no longer benefiting from it or from Britain taking some of its brightest and best who now contribute nothing to Nepal and return nothing to Nepal.
Unsurprisingly the Nepalese government have said that they are going to stop Britain recruiting Gurkhas, just as they've already stopped the Indian Army doing so (for different reasons).
The only reason it hasn't already happened is because the Nepalese government is in disarray.
Mind-numbingly short-sighted by Britain and selfish by the Gurkhas who protested with no consideration for future generations or for Nepal.
The Gurkhas have done so much for this country and been so fiercely loyal. I think we should be doing more for the people of Nepal and the poverty they live in to repay them for giving us their sons for our defence.

Because of some in Derby I visited Nepal last year. And can now boast to have stayed with a retired Gurkha engineer in his home in Kathmandu and was well looked after by his wife’s family. I had an amazing and eye opening time, i visited the British army camp in Pokhara and have seen the mountain they go up as part of the tests.
Truly amazing country, they did love it when I was speaking Nepali telling them their food was tastier than UK food 😂😂😂
I was received so well, they were thanking me for coming and learning about Nepal! Of course i thanked them back for beating the British and joining our forces then to teach us white people about their country and accept me into a minority.

Nepal thinks so too, which is why they have said that since the UK has unilaterally broken the 1949 tri-partite agreement, so as Gurkhas are no longer sending their pay and pensions back to Nepal they're going to stop Gurkha recruiting, although they haven't yet said when.

My grandfather fought in the Korean war and he fought alongside many soldiers from different countries: Americans, Australians and the south Koreans however he always said that gurkhas are something else and he always spoke about them with the up most respect.

What a brilliant video the Gurkhas are brilliant fighting force one of my late uncles fought along side Gurkhas and always said how good they where and that they where feared by the Japanese
The Gurkhas are amazing. My dad served along side the Gurkhas in Burma against the Japanese my dad said they were the most loyal, brave, wonderful men & was very proud to have served with them.

I am proud to own a Ghurka's khukri, that was given to my grandfather after he served with them in Burma.
The quote from former Indian Army Chief of Staff Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw is actually ""If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or he is a Gurkha." which is rather different.
I suggest you read Birdie Smith's "Even the Brave Falter" if you want some insight, or Allinson's diaries.
FWIW, Anyone who says he is not afraid in battle is a liability and a danger to everyone around them.

FWIW, "Gurkhas' kukris" are available for sale in every unit PRI shop as they're mass produced in Dehradun, India, by the thousands and bought by the Army (#1 or#2, parade or service).
... and while some Nepalese still call them "khukuris", in the Bde they're always "kukris".

@@ZooZoo293 Nothing "contrary" about it. FWIW, I served in the Gurkhas, cap-badged Gurkhas, so it's just possible I may be slightly better informed about the Gurkhas than some here hence my disagreeing with some comments.
Every Gurkha regiment has / had it's own baun (pandit), or Hindu priest, just as every 'British' regiment has/had it's own Christian padre (padres / priests from other major religions are held at Army level rather than in units).
Literally every Gurkha in the regiment was a practising Hindu, although I know that at least one practising Christian has served in the regiment since, just as all the British officers, including myself, were Christian (some rather more than others).
It wasn't mandatory, it's just how it was.
FWIW, I became (and am) a Theravadan Buddhist while serving, and no-one batted an eyelid when I changed my religion on my docs - the unit I was in / cap-badged to at the time happened to be nearly all Buddhist, purely co-incidentally. We also trained the last four recruits for the British Army's last remaining all-Sikh unit, where being a Sikh was 100% mandatory (both units were disbanded just prior to 1997).
I also served on loan for a couple of years in one of the Gulf armies, cap-badged to them, where being a Moslem was very much mandatory (apart from for those on loan or contract) and an integral part, spelt out not only in the annual training directive I wrote but in every operational order given.
Your "lord" may be yours, and I don't have any problem at all with that, but that doesn't make them "ours".

The Ghurkas are very slick and super well trained..and a Silver band like our Marine Band...oh and Uniform is okay for them..they could change if they wanted to. They fight like ten men each..so who cares about uniform. Taking over Guard at Windsor which they have done often in the past, which even Kiwi Soldiers did in 1965 Or 1966..

The Nepalese guys I have spoken to reinforced the fact it is very difficult to become a Ghurka and it’s a real family honour. They are obedient, disciplined, aggressive, loyal, honourable, dependable and a force to be reckoned with. Why then does the government treat them like scum after they served in a honourable in the defence of the UK?I admire Joanna Lumley as their voice in allowing them to settle and retire in UK with full benefits. 😎🇬🇧😎🇬🇧

I have 2 bracelets made by the Gurkhas whilst living in Hong Kong. My husband was in the 16/5th Queens Royal Lancers. How brave are these men, and how smart! No half measures with them! "one army" - what army is that?
The Brigade of Gurkhas are under the same TACOS as the rest of the British Army - the only difference is that Nepal only allows men to be recruited, not women, but when all roles were opened to women the Brigade of Gurkhas was specifically included.
They are fierce fighters,but are very lovely, gentle and community minded people..I would say they are quite woke,as are most Buddhists.

My father was a member of Merrill's Marauders in WWII. He did not speak much about the war or his time in Burma. When he did speak of it, he spoke of the Gurkhas and how he held them to the highest regard. Still to this day, they are certainly some of the greatest soldiers in the world..

The dear Queen would always at investures alway have behind her a couple of GURKA guards. A Celeb! Said when he was being present with his medal he had a small trip up ,when he look up the GURKA behind the Queen had already taken a step forward and had his hand on his Kukri knife, he said his blood ran cold. 👍.
They weren't "GURKA guards". They're actually 'Queen's Gurkha Orderly Officers', now 'King's Gurkha Orderly Officers' - two a year, on a 12 month post.

I believe that during the Falklands war the poor Argentinian conscripts cried when they heard the Gurkhas were being deployed to fight there
A myth.
I heard Argentine regimental commanders surrendered before the Ghurkas got ashore and then got investigated for after the war.
@@kithill2811 You heard very badly wrong. Argentine invaded on 2 April; the first regimental surrender (12 and 25 IR) was at Goose Green on 29 May to 2 Para - Gurkhas had no involvement in it, and the first Gurkha troops (D Coy, 1/7th) landed on 1 June.
@John-G haven't you just confirmed what you replied to? The Argies surrendered before the Ghurkas arrived..
@@CitroenDS23 No and no - wrong on both counts.
There's a well known news report of the 1/7th Bn 2ic coming out of the ops tent on 14 June saying "there's a white flag over Stanley", so anyone who saw the news at the time would know that, even without checking any dates, they were obviously there at the time of the surrender.
What's not so well known is that it took three takes for him to get it right 😂.
They surrendered soon after Goose Green, when Chris Keeble had negotiated their surrender there. Any suggestion that the surrender there had anything to do with the news that "the Gurkhas are coming" is not only absurd and badly uninformed but an insult to those who died at Goose Green, on both sides.
Edit: FWIW the Falklands highlighted everything that was wrong with the Gurkhas at the time. Their lack of English and All Arms training / experience meant that they couldn't properly control fire support (both CAS and arty) - most radio comms was still in Gurkhali, not English. They couldn't use RAF or AAC air support as they opened fire at anything flying over / near them, as they had little or no air recognition training - so much so that the RAF avoided overflying their TAOR. They opened fire on patrols from the Scots Gds bn next to them, so that the Scots Gds had to leave a 1km wide strip between them unpatrolled.
All recorded in the official history of the war, so not bar room gossip.
TBF it wasn't their fault as their pre-deployment test exercises had shown that neither they nor the Welsh Gds were combat ready, and the plan was that they would be used to guard the prisoners, as is now confirmed open source as it was over twenty years ago so no longer classified.
Again, TBF, not their fault in any way as neither they nor the Welsh Gds were operationally ready due to their roles at the time.

I remember being sent to Netheravon on a medium Vickers course. On thar course where three Gurha corporals. Each had over Severn years service, and campaign medals. Here I was with year and a bit of service, with little knowledge, and even less skill. We had of number of night exercises, many of the course asked to demonstrate their skill. First Time in My life I know Gurkas. As argentina, when Malvinas war, we used to listen about them. We were afraid of them. By the way, nowadays we Say "...is a Gurka" when we mean someone is dangerous. I can see i'm this magnificent video they are about a very special oriental force, and, scotich too?. Disciplin and ritual are very oriental and I apreciate their timing, when they move guns. Well, I think -pardom me if I was fairy - they demonstrate when in fight, calm, opportunity and rationality are necessary for be gentlemen. I woud be pleased to know more about Gurkhas.
You couldn't have a more loyal friend than a Gurkha, or a worse enemy. Perfect Gentleman and Warrior combined into one person.
The Scottish connection is the Clan Douglas tartan from an association with the Cameronian Scottish Rifles and the Pipe Band goes back to the 1880's, again from a Scottish Army connection. You can learn all you need to know about the Gurkhas on Y-T videos from the early days to the present.

An interesting anecdote, I suspect it is true. In the Falklands conflict after the main forces of the UK (Paras, RM's and Gurkha) had taken the high ground. After continuous shelling the command issued a warning to the Argentinians below. That the Gurkhas would be sent down in the night. A few hours later the surrender was formalised. The Gurkhas were disappointed. A lot around this conflict has been made of the rivalry between the Paras and the Marines. The Gurkhas though are probably too humble to get involved in tit for tat.
I was disappointed to hear some young Nepalese were recruited by Putin's recruitment plan. Maybe the UK should do more to support opportunities in Nepal. They are Nobel people and worthy of our support.

They used to cry if they were refused gard duty other people didn't like it so,for the kit inspection before and after but for the Gurkhas it was a great honer and privilege.

The nation owes those who serve and have served in the Gurkha Regiment all respect and gratitude ; never has a nation had a better friend better comrades in arms and a more loyal and brave soldiers then the Gurkhas ; The nation has been blessed and should feel humbled that the Gurkhas are serving and protecting the nation !! The Gurkhas moto sums them up and their motto is , 'Kaphar hunnu bhanda marnu ramro' it means, 'It is better to die than to live like a coward.
Sir Ralph Turner, said it best when he was asked to describe the Gurkha Regiment ; “ They are the Bravest of the brave, most generous of the generous, never had country more faithful friends than you”.

Yes I have been to Windsor, in fact had dinner there with my wife. We were representatives of our company and supporting Royal Charities for this benefit event. Had the honor of dining with Prince Edward and Princess Sophie. Wonderful evening.

Why were the officers marching back and forth, and turning at the wall ? What does that mean ? Very sharp looking Gerka soldiers. 👍
It's called 'Pacing the minutes' & it's an old tradition but no one is quite sure why it started.
Most likely it's from when Officers on the battlefield were walking along troop formations checking everything was correct. It may have also helped morale as the men could see their Officers in front of them & felt reassured.
Pacing the minutes means the officers can move so they're less likely to faint - it started as a way of showing they were sober.
This is amazing getting the chance to see such a momentous and historical occasion.
About time this wonderful loyal nation has been handed this duty......
