Its intresting comparing the Outlander & Game Of Thrones in this way. 1 designer is trying to find a balance of period authenticity & creative licence & The other has so much more freedom to play with time periods & cultural inspiration. Another great & researched video!!!!

STANDING OVATION! I totally agree about Angus and Rupert, they could've at least thrown the green or a darker brown or gray in there instead of so uniformly brown. Throughout history the comic relief had always been the most colorful (just looks at commedia dell'arte's Arlecchino), so it was a little disappointing setting those 2 so monochromatic.
Have you ever considered doing videos on the costumes of Lord of the Rings? I just saw an interview with the costume designer and thought it'd be a great source of research for you.

Costume CO Yeah, no kidding. In the video, they show the warehouse with over 9,000 COSTUMES!!!! 🤤🤤🤤🤤
I WON'T LIE, IT LEFT ME A BIT TRAUMATIZED. But the details you don't see onscreen were fascinating, like how Sariman's robe, while beautiful, was frayed at the edges and worn.

      I haven't, are they good?

    • @angellover02171
      @angellover02171 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Both are pretty good but more soap opera-y than GoT. Poldark set in Cornwall during the Regency period and it's about a former Amry Captain that returns home from war to find his father has died, his girl is engaged to his cousin and he is deeply indebted. It's coming back a for a 4th season. Versailles is about King Louix the 14th's transformation of Versailles from a hunting lodge to a grand castle. The costumes look amazing.
Should also mention the show Harlots a period drama set in 1763 in London. It's about rival madams one is upper class and the other lower class. It's on hulu and should be coming back for a second season sometime this yea.

Poldark is on Masterpiece Theater, so not one of the more popular channels. There are actually two versions of it: one from the 1960s, and one from 2015 (I think).

Allowing one's jacket to remain frayed does not seem very "period" to me. Clothes and cloth were terribly expensive, and think almost everyone would take steps to prevent their coat from becoming rags any faster than it had to.

    Could someone tell me
    1) Why people started wearing exaggerated cuffs? Did they have any purpose or was it show like super-long belts in the middle ages? In contrast to the belts e.g a sash did serve a purpose: it did add some protection to the belly.
    2) Can anyone recommend something to read about tricorns? I've heard many things about them and wonder what of it is true. Moreover, I've seen plenty of different variants, many probably just poor reproductions, thus I wonder how they were supposed to really look. Here some statements I've heard about them:
    a) they originate from the broad brimmed hats, where the right side was pinned up in order to prevent the hat getting sparks from the musket.
    b) folding three sides up made them very aerodynamic so that they are some of the best hats to not fly off in the wind.
    c) The length of the brim and how it was folded was determined by its functionality. The brim should be long enough on the front to protect the eyes from rain and should extend on the back such that the rain would be guided behind the shoulders and drain from the open corners. This in combination with b) would require the hat to be worn in a very specific angle and the brim should not be folded too far inwards.
Edit: actually long belts did serve a purpose too, however it evolved only after they got so long: they were used to fixate sword scabbards.

Hi Edi, Brenna, who is my historian consultant on this piece could probably speak more to this than I can. My understanding of the length or width of something is that it was determined by the English court. France at the time was a major trend setter and that would have been carried over. The French exaggerated many of the silhouettes with the width of the court gowns being so ridiculous that women would have to turn sideways to get through the doors. As far as the cuffs are concerned, there might be a reason for an extreme width. I'd be interested to know this as well. 😁

I can't speak for the history of the tricorn, but the squished shape of the Western "cowboy hat" is said to be a holdover from the tricorn hat in how it's shaped. The tip at the front can help reduce glare of a low hanging sun while "riding into the sunset", in an age when sunglasses were likely not yet invented. It does protect against the rain. I mostly wear wool (said cowboy hat and sweater, sometimes windproof top coat or vest) in our rainy winter, but a good oilcloth riding jacket can come in handy cowboying around, so it's on my shopping list...
