For almost 10 years I’ve had an electronic device implanted in my left hip area. It electronically blocks sciatic nerve pain. I recharge wirelessly on a daily basis and it has been life changing after 3 years of barely walking or standing. If Neuralink can be medically applied for those limited physically by illness or injury, I support this.

Your body is a technology. Pain is your body’s way of communicating something you’re consistently doing isn’t in your best interest. By simply blocking the pain and nothing more, you essentially are giving a free pass to wear and tear that will most likely cause more issues down the road. I challenge you to become aware of the root cause of your sciatic pain (muscle imbalance from tight hip flexors/weak glutes usually from sitting too much) and tackle that head on. You are the captain of your body. Your body is a self healing mechanism if you stop doing the things that throw it off balance. Your gadget can help assist your mobility temporarily until you’re on a better routine and in better health, but better health will only come from your awareness of what is and efforts to change what hasn’t worked. While this worries me alot due to just way too many issues and problems this kind of thing may bring up, it does sort of excite me to think that this type of technology could maybe help people with locked in syndrome and many other people being affected by brain or body disabilites.
We need laws NOW that prohibit the involuntary implantation of devices into any person, under any circumstances. Not for punishment. Not for monitoring. To everyone who is saying that its scary since Neuralink can be hacked, ponder on this for a minute. Imagine you are someone who, like the people requesting to be used for these first experiments, lacks the ability to walk or have basic motor function because of a neurologic issue. In 100 years, you could potentially see these very same people walking perfectly fine and even using the stairs, or running. As someone with full body arthritis, I can vaugly imagine what these people go through on a day to day basis not being able to perform basic human tasks that many of us completely take for granted. It is easy to say that this could be a future apocalypse, but it is very important to look at the positives that this will most definitely provide for people far less fortunate than yourselves. Also, Elon Musk is one of the largest people, if not the largest person in the tech industry right now, and he has recently spoken on his concerns of AI technology. He wants there to be a lot more work done on protection from future AI and he is a large advocate for slowing down their progress so that we can implement safety limitations. To think that someone who has already shown himself to be a man who is very concerned with this type of issue would carelessly work on a project like Neuralink without doing an extensive amount of work on protection against hackers, or misuse of the product is ridiculous. I personally think that this company and the products that they issue will do far more good than bad in the future and I know for a fact that they will improve the lives of people who are legally disabled by orders of magnitude. To deprive someone suffering from a brain issue of this sort of treatment on the basis of specuation alone is more cruel than waiting patiently and seeing where the future of this technology will take us.

Yes, this sounds scary, especially given that we know very little about the brain, how it sends signals and how to decode them. I believe that we are at the very beginning of a long track, at the end of which we will be able to help people with different diseases. But of course, another problem is that authorities will most likely eventually use it to enhance our mental capabilities, to make more productive and work longer and harder. Maybe, they will even find a way to control people. So this topic is quite ambiguous: at this point it can help a lot, but later it can bring a lot of harm (thanks to mean nature of people in power).

There was an episode of Stargate SG-1, Season 7 Episode 5 called Revisions. It had to do with a society that was linked via a device to a central computer. Well, their society was in a forcefield dome with toxic air outside it. The dome was slowly collapsing in and the computer took over people's bodies and walked them to their deaths to ensure the survival of the rest of the people. However, the reason why no one noticed the computer was doing it was because the computer removed any memories related to the disappeared people. With the moral of this story, I will never allow my brain to be compromised by a neuralink. Think of the ethics of this. Just because we can do it, the question of "should we do it" needs to be asked.

I'm sure there will be some people that will be willing to use it. Just don't use it if you don't want, people will be able to benefit from it if they need it. Stuff like this could be life changing for paralyzed or paraplegic people and could make them physically able again. Like Elon said at some point, it could theoretically make the blind able to see again. That's the type of stuff some people would be willing to risk their lives for, and I think giving them an opportunity to have eyesight or making them able to walk or have arms is worth it. This won't cause problems for anyone who doesn't get a BCI, so you and I both shouldn't necessarily be against something like this if we aren't even the ones who would be getting them

It's just that I don't trust the mega-corporations with their lax quality control and profit-orientated mindset to handle that properly. Trying to be optimistic about this. A few years ago, my dad had a bad fall, which ultimately led him to lose his ability to communicate, and A LOT of difficult decisions for me and my brother to make. At one point, I was attempting to come up with an E-Trans board (similar to what Hawking used), to try to understand what he was trying to say. He was desperately trying to communicate but could only mumble incoherently, and didn't have strength to write. It was all way too crazy as he was a bright and very able man beforehand. Knowing him, he would have volunteered for something like this. The doctors were writing him off and expected he would pass within a day or two. But with his stubborn will, he made it another two years. It still breaks my heart when thinking about it, because he ultimately was stuck in bed for those two years and never regained his full cognitive ability, and died a year ago.

When you see some of the food and stuff authorized in the US, it's hard to have much trust in their approval. Anyways, I'm guessing this isn't "safe" but if people are willing to take the risk for a better future and the FDA is authorizing it, then lets wait and see (obviously the people taking part in this should get a full risk presentation).

The thing that concerns me about these kind of thing is the long term effects. We don’t know how our body will react to this. And if it’s connected to the internet, couldn’t it just be hacked? And somebody would just have control over your entire body.
I agree. But then again, what use would it have, controlling the body of an average Joe? Luckily not many people will know how to code this. It's probably so complicated and wildly different from normal computers even hackers won't really know what to do with it unless they had an incentive to learn, which would take weeks or months, costing them a lot of time and money. Unless the person with the implant is very rich or powerful, OR the hacker just hates their guts to the point of willing to miss out on weeks/months of income, the hackers are probably going to choose a lot easier ways to make money. When I was at college, I had the opportunity to test a BCI peripheral. It was amazing. If you focused and wanted to spell the name prompted, you could achieve it at high efficiency. I have mixed feelings. On one end the medical possibilities are astounding. Being able to reverse crippling conditions is an amazing feat. But also these chips appear to remotely communicate with the computer, unless the monkey is plugged in somehow and I missed it. So in theory they could be remotely connected to in public. Even with top notch security, someone would eventually figure out a way to compromise it and cause problems with peoples brains and body’s. Im curious if instead of allowing people to use technology with their mind, they instead simply focused on reversing crippling conditions. Could they make a closed system where you regained movement and function but couldn’t connect to anything? That would be impossible to hack unless someone directly plugged into you.

To everyone who is saying that its scary since Neuralink can be hacked, ponder on this for a minute. Imagine you are someone who, like the people requesting to be used for these first experiments, lacks the ability to walk or have basic motor function because of a neurologic issue. In 100 years, you could potentially see these very same people walking perfectly fine and even using the stairs, or running. As someone with full body arthritis, I can vaugly imagine what these people go through on a day to day basis not being able to perform basic human tasks that many of us completely take for granted. It is easy to say that this could be a future apocalypse, but it is very important to look at the positives that this will most definitely provide for people far less fortunate than yourselves. Also, Elon Musk is one of the largest people, if not the largest person in the tech industry right now, and he has recently spoken on his concerns of AI technology. He wants there to be a lot more work done on protection from future AI and he is a large advocate for slowing down their progress so that we can implement safety limitations. To think that someone who has already shown himself to be a man who is very concerned with this type of issue would carelessly work on a project like Neuralink without doing an extensive amount of work on protection against hackers, or misuse of the product is ridiculous. I personally think that this company and the products that they issue will do far more good than bad in the future and I know for a fact that they will improve the lives of people who are legally disabled by orders of magnitude. To deprive someone suffering from a brain issue of this sort of treatment on the basis of specuation alone is more cruel than waiting patiently and seeing where the future of this technology will take us.

Im all for help with medical issues. Sadly it has become increasingly obvious that far to many people in the position to allow or disallow other uses have no moral compass. I also am glad I won’t be alive long enough to witness the damage it will cause.
Yes, this sounds scary, especially given that we know very little about the brain, how it sends signals and how to decode them. I believe that we are at the very beginning of a long track, at the end of which we will be able to help people with different diseases. But of course, another problem is that authorities will most likely eventually use it to enhance our mental capabilities, to make more productive and work longer and harder. Maybe, they will even find a way to control people. So this topic is quite ambiguous: at this point it can help a lot, but later it can bring a lot of harm (thanks to mean nature of people in power).

There was an episode of Stargate SG-1, Season 7 Episode 5 called Revisions. It had to do with a society that was linked via a device to a central computer. Well, their society was in a forcefield dome with toxic air outside it. The dome was slowly collapsing in and the computer took over people's bodies and walked them to their deaths to ensure the survival of the rest of the people. However, the reason why no one noticed the computer was doing it was because the computer removed any memories related to the disappeared people.
With the moral of this story, I will never allow my brain to be compromised by a neuralink.
Think of the ethics of this. Just because we can do it, the question of "should we do it" needs to be asked.

This will be a bad move for Elon. I've had a traumatic brain injury, and there is no way that I would get something like this. This all goes to the fact that of what's going on now. The control of society..
I'm sure there will be some people that will be willing to use it. Just don't use it if you don't want, people will be able to benefit from it if they need it. Stuff like this could be life changing for paralyzed or paraplegic people and could make them physically able again. Like Elon said at some point, it could theoretically make the blind able to see again. That's the type of stuff some people would be willing to risk their lives for, and I think giving them an opportunity to have eyesight or making them able to walk or have arms is worth it. This won't cause problems for anyone who doesn't get a BCI, so you and I both shouldn't necessarily be against something like this if we aren't even the ones who would be getting them

Trying to be optimistic about this. A few years ago, my dad had a bad fall, which ultimately led him to lose his ability to communicate, and A LOT of difficult decisions for me and my brother to make. At one point, I was attempting to come up with an E-Trans board (similar to what Hawking used), to try to understand what he was trying to say. He was desperately trying to communicate but could only mumble incoherently, and didn't have strength to write. It was all way too crazy as he was a bright and very able man beforehand. Knowing him, he would have volunteered for something like this. The doctors were writing him off and expected he would pass within a day or two. But with his stubborn will, he made it another two years. It still breaks my heart when thinking about it, because he ultimately was stuck in bed for those two years and never regained his full cognitive ability, and died a year ago.

The thing that concerns me about these kind of thing is the long term effects. We don’t know how our body will react to this. And if it’s connected to the internet, couldn’t it just be hacked? And somebody would just have control over your entire body.
I agree. But then again, what use would it have, controlling the body of an average Joe? Luckily not many people will know how to code this. It's probably so complicated and wildly different from normal computers even hackers won't really know what to do with it unless they had an incentive to learn, which would take weeks or months, costing them a lot of time and money. Unless the person with the implant is very rich or powerful, OR the hacker just hates their guts to the point of willing to miss out on weeks/months of income, the hackers are probably going to choose a lot easier ways to make money. That is if the code is really that complicated. Unfortunately I don't know. I just try to be hopeful lol. I'm sure they're taking safety measures
When I was at college, I had the opportunity to test a BCI peripheral. It was amazing. If you focused and wanted to spell the name prompted, you could achieve it at high efficiency. But as soon as you became distracted or bored it became less accurate. Fascinating to see this technology develop further.

I have mixed feelings. On one end the medical possibilities are astounding. Being able to reverse crippling conditions is an amazing feat.
But also these chips appear to remotely communicate with the computer, unless the monkey is plugged in somehow and I missed it. So in theory they could be remotely connected to in public. Even with top notch security, someone would eventually figure out a way to compromise it and cause problems with peoples brains and body’s.

I don't think they care that much about crippling conditions and people's health in general. Klaus Schwab (the founder of the World Economic Forum) in one interview in 2016 explained that human beings will soon receive a chip in order to merge with the digital world.
I think they will release multiple versions of it,probably shit like deluxe,techno etc. Hopefully they can release versions with only specific benefits,just like what you said
