The Mk1 Focus was a fantastically well engineered car. It was a response to Richard Parry Jones (head of Ford Europe) getting out of one of the later Escorts and straight into a Peugeot 306. He realised Ford were WAY off the pace and so set about making a class-leader. I have two BMWs, one is an E39 M5 and in some areas the Ford is better (steering feedback and feel).
When the Focus was first unveiled, Clarkson was impressed and astonished saying it had cornered the saloon and hatchback market in one swoop. Does anyone have that clip?
I've had a 10 year old Focus for nearly 2 years now, and I'm totally happy with it. The only things I've had to replace is a spring and a couple of light bulbs.
I love the Focus. It's roomy, inexpensive, reasonably fast, makes a nice sound and most important of all, drives like nothing else for the same money. Best family car ever.
Loved mine and never commented to someone 15 years later so hi 👋🏻. I’ve driven many cars through work and family but have only ever owned a Focus. Current is a mk4 I’m gutted they will no longer be making them.
Astonishing to think that cars didnt have seat belts in the rear, back in the 70s. I used to like standing on the transmission tunnel of my dads capri and looking out the sunroof while he was driving. Happy days, innocent times.
My 2003 Mk1 2.0 Trend/Sport Zetec is still going strong in 2020. Show me another car with such a superb handling, only 131 PS and going to real 100 km/h in 8.2 secs. Love mine !
I remember, as a child in the '50s, standing up in the front seat as my mother drove around. My "seat belt" was my mother's right arm, which would come out in front of me if she had to make a fast stop. Driving was more fun in those days. More dead and wounded, but more fun.
One of the greatest cars ever built, no joke. It turned Ford around after some horrible years in early 1990s. Sharp styling, amazing packaging, great new engines, class leading suspension, good build quality, cheap to run, easy to work on. In all aspects compared to the rivals around at that time it either matched or bettered them.
Now in 2020 I still use two MK1 focus cars, simply because there perfect in every way. Even today the styling and look of them is far striking than most other cars, and I'm yet to find anything wrong with them.
@1708howard No he is not comparing them at all, what he is saying is that companies like Ford aim 5 door cars like the focus at the average family but that it doesn't work because the average family has gotten bigger, 5 seats in a car doesn't work with mum, dad, 3 kids and their friend from school. This is why he says "so why do we almost never see these cars on the school run?" and then shows the clips of MPV's and SUV's as they are larger with (usually) at least one extra seat.
@BurningFliesAlive The Focus wasn't really American, the only connection with the states is the badge. It was designed, engineered and built in Europe, and went on sale here a couple of years before the US...
lol here in Indonesia, hatchbacks are considered as youngster cars, even a Focus here is considered as a man's car.Usually they use 7 seaters for family purpose.
168,000 miles 1 clutch 1 alternator the normal brake jobs, oil changes, tires and a couple recalls the where all done with in an hour after taking it in. I've for sure spent double what I paid for it.
I still think this Mk1 Focus is one of the most radical and best looking small hatches ever made. It still looks pretty sharp and modern today., never mind 20 years ago! Better than the current model in fact which, like most cars nowadays, has become quite bloated and overweight.
Love my Focus. Its been banged, bashed, and little plastic parts in the car have given way. (glovebox handle, turning switcher doesn't shift back to neutral after a turn) But its gone through such little maintenance. It needs a tune-up for some ridiculous amount of mileage, and the only repair in 9 years was a clogged pipe that was the fault of a mechanic. Its nimble, and REALLY handles corners. (esp around the mountainous bends along the Finger Lakes) Just wish it had mo power. Only 130hp...
I don't think you can judge a company on the back of just one of its products. My wife's grandmother bought a Taurus when they first debuted and within six months, it had a new engine, transaxle, was rewired, and had new ball joints. I've worked on a number of Phords and they're okay, but, like any other car, they are throwaways and not built to last. The same goes for Chrysler.
2 of my Focus's doors are extremely hard to open, they require a very hard yank to open. Plus the Left Rear door no longer works at all, inside or out. I guess its better then the older ones where the doors would fly open during driving.....
Here, they seem to be much the same quality. A number of models are built in Mexico and if you've ever been there, you'll understand why the quality isn't there any more. I own an '84 Ramcharger SUV and got 325,000 miles out of the stock engine before I rebuilt it. I mercilessly abused that truck and it kept delivering. That said, quality, accounting for tolerances that "stack up" is very much up to the individual vehicle.
@JackBandicootsBunker I like that one too. 3 series vs the Focus, because they aren't related to each other in the fact that they're completely different types of cars, I think they were comparing just on the basis that they were both family cars at that time in 2001 or whenever this was broadcasted. By the end of this year when i pass my test, I'm either going to get a Focus 1.4 CL or LX, or a 1.6 Zetec it needs to be a mk1 hatchback with 5 doors, what would you recommend?
@BloodyBumper He is praising it for its good qualities and Bashing Ford's (and other companies) old fashioned habit of marketing the 5 door hatchback to the average family which has grown in recent years. (to anyone in a country where the average family is still small ie: mum, dad and 2 kids at most, this is naturally aimed at a UK audience)
For some reason Fords sold to the European market are substantially better made vehicles than the ones sold in North America. My aunt in Holland has a Focus and it is the best/most reliable car she has ever owned.
That's the difference between US and British cars since time began, it seems: American cars are built for drag racing without much concern for handling and European cars handle well, but are anemic under the hood. That said, I have a love for old Astins and Maseratis. I also can't deny the Lotus Elise, Noble M12, or Ariel Atom contributions to the automotive world. And not all Americans are from New York. Some of us are decent.
True muscle cars are normally spartan, giving up luxuries for performance and flash. I'm good with that. If you want leather interior and wood accents, buy a luxury car. Most cars don't combine both well. A lot of Americans have little econoboxes to get to work and around town, and some of us have older project cars for weekend use. I don't know what the difference between our country's safety standards is, but I believe ours are more strict, making it hard for some foreign cars to enter.
Wonder why no other car maker than Toyota with the last Camry estate had a third row in the trunk like Mercedes did until ~2017 with their e-class. Enough space in the Focus estate and even more in the Mondeo. Not terribly comfortable but gets your kid's friends home for a visit on an official seat with seat belts
@VTS1337 Most people think all these comparable cars end up better value for money at the cheaper price tag but sadly there is no value for money with cars. Interesting, because was in an 06 Focus estate taxi last night going into town on the p**s. I was sat right up, knees over the dashboard and my head against the roof and where was the height adjuster? Zilch. It made the journey feel horrible. At least VAG always have adjusters usually as standard.
i love how the focus is a "family" car in the uk, here in the us it is a car you buy your kidsssss to go to school with, we use Honda Accords, Ford Taurus', Chevy Lumina's, and other lager cars for family cars here... there are also alot of suv's too, but not the normal v6 disco's like you guys have, we have huge v8 Chevy Suburbans, and Ford Expiditions... i guess we just like the bigger cars
@Plisken1986 could well be your IIHS is different to our N-Cap tests. The Golf is not at all underpowered to drive its on-par with a Focus 1.6 they are as nippy as eachother off the mark. Even so the TDi's are even punchier than Fords TDCi's if you ever drive them. The 140 Golf TDi engines feel like they hav a lot more punch than a TDCi 140 they are less lag & more wallop!
Not so good family car. But very good for me. I get pretty good fuel mileage and its pretty shifty. I can get it 0-60 in about 10 seconds. Not bad for my first car :) Most people are stuck with a micra or a saxo.
Clarkson prattles on like the Ford Focus is the only car that exsists in the whole of Britain. You don't have to buy a Focus if you want a small family car they do have an Astra, Golf, Megane and Leon available incase you didn't know.
@VTS1337 You think because Fords have 5-stars, mood lit interiors, Convers+ screens, Voice control, bluetooth and phone connection that they have moved on. They have to cost cut somewhere on drum brakes, no passenger seat height adjuster, no spare wheel etc. But Ford aren't the only ones to keep using rear drums, Vauxhall are another offender of drums. Corsas and Fiestas have so much drums on them they could start off a rock band!
@mpc1209 I wasn't the one who asked if anyone preferred Ford to BMW. You did. Bit of a silly thing to ask that question because we all know the answer is not going to be Ford so why ask? Thats like asking what would everyone like to cruise round the carribean in? A raft made of match sticks or the Oreana/QE2.
@1ns4ne1d10t ,well thats true enough, never had one for more than a year, but my sister has one for a few years now and never had any trouble with it.id definitley buy one again tho.there easy to fix and there's no problem getting parts for them if you did need to fix them.
@VTS1337 Ford don't equip all the brand new Kinetic designed cars with disk brakes as standard, no no! They still use drums at the rear on most. I know most of the 2010 Fiestas use drums except the Zetec S even the titanium uses drums and I know that for a fact because I worked for a rental company driving those cars.
@Porsche1080 You sound surprised? they've sold them over here for yonks now.. We have had your square box 4.0 V6/2.5TD Jeep Cherokees in RHD since 1990 and your Voyagers and Neons since 1995. We also had your 3.8 V6 Ford Explorers in RHD in 1995 for a while as there was a growing popular demand for S.U.V's from the USA during the 1990's.
I agree that most american sports cars don't handle like european sports cars, but you also have to take into consideration that the corvette and mustang have very little electronic controls to help the car in the turn and that the viper has none at all (besides ABS) wich in my opinion kinda makes it the evolved form of our muscle car era.
@coolerdude44 I wouldn't buy one currently in the US. Its fugly here. I like the look of my 'ol Focus, but the proportions of the current American one are just odd. It looks smaller and more boxy. And its expensive in comparison to a Fit, Civic, Elantra (especially Elantra), Mazda3, Scions, and everything else. Its over $16k new BASE. No discounts given, either. Just way too much. Mine was just at 14k, and far from bare-bones. I'm sure when the "new" one comes it'll be a hit again.
lol my dad owns one, i can get it to oversteer and do 2nd gear chirps, and ford makes racing parts for it that u can buy at the dealership and have them install with a warranty
@VTS1337 Fords STILL have wind down windows at the rear, nearly all of them do, same as Vauxhall/GM. You can buy as Top spec GM/Ford as you like but you won't get all round electric windows on any of them or height adjusters. undenyably VAG always have all-round everything on their cars including better quality sound systems and stereo's. People can argue the toss all they like but this is why you pay more for a VW then you do Ford or GM. You get better things when you pay a higher price.
@Plisken1986 I have never found a Golf Mk IV to be any of the things you mentioned, whats written on a piece of paper differs to the real world. A Seat Ibiza is supposed to be 0-60 in 15 seconds because its a 1.2 12V with 3cyls, its nothing like that. Its more like 12-11. Because the Polo 1.2 12V is underpowered they assumed the Seat is the same but it isn't, its much lighter & quicker.
@mpc1209 I wouldn't put all your money on 'what car' magazine. They forgot to mention about the 1.8 TDCi's in these rotters. The dreadful 8V endura diesel from the 1980's which had an entire injection system from delphi. Read all about the 1.8 TDCi in the Focus Mk1 and come back and tell me it gets 5/5.
@tiansivive yeah I know what you're talking about, the situation is even worse here in Greece, people are being fired every day and university graduates can't find jobs, oh and the taxes have recently DOUBLED on everything.
love this ford, 1.8 zetec and 2.0l zetec good for powerful family cars And then u get a 2,5L ST :D-Good for the family run again and alot quicker, and then the RS is about the same but a bit quicker and lighter etc. Ford focus 2012 is superb on its safety and as a family car and even an executive car-- Why do you think enterprise rent a car always use em!!
@mrzkhan1 I worked for Enterprise rent a car as a prep/driver and unfortunately we have Focuses, just don't get me started on two things: 1. The Focuses because they are utterly crap cars 2. Enterprises bad reputation as a company and the way they treated retail customers. I wouldn't call them an executive car, since when have executive cars rattled, squeaked, rusted so early and broke down so often. The best ones in our D groups were Golfs, Focuses were down in the pit with Astras and i30's.
@beefycheesecake Why have you had loads of them then? You obviously Kept them for short periods of time and sold them on well before they could develop any problems.
if you are one yes, I'm merely stating the fact Jeremy Clarkson is now (Now Ross had left) the Biggest BBC Paid star and earns millions and talks as if he can't afford it
@Mr69Deano indeed I agree that you get what you pay for but I have to disagree with the "expensive Audi" claims because if you look at the list prices of a new Ford Focus on poverty spec its actually very nearly on par with an Audi A3 on poverty spec. An Audi A3 is only a few hundred more then a Focus. The Volkswagen Golf and BMW 1 series beats the Focus on being cheaper. I also looked at the list prices for the Volvo C30's compared with Fords and I was totally shocked at Fords prices.
@vteckicksarse Ouch! Cost you quite a bit! Seats FR's are quite cheap to sort out if they ever go wrong, they aren't too expensive when they cock up. If you want power you have to pay for it though. My sisters boyfriend has a 206 2.0L 16V GTi 140 and thats broken everything in the A-Z index of the Haynes manual. Clutch, waterpump, 2x headgaskets, cambelt, driveshaft packed up, new gearbox you name it its been broken.
@sabalito91 I agree, people like to go round thinking these cars WILL be guaranteed to last forever and ever and ever and outlast everything thats Japanese or German. My mate Ryans got an X reg Focus Ghia 2.0 and he says hes fed up of its fair share of "gremlyns". Its a Ford, and Ford will always be Ford, need I say any more?
Should have done the third row in the estate version like in Mercedes e-class estates. Want to bring friends? Problem solved at least it's good for temporary use AND it's legal
What's so wrong with Texas? You say that you have different cultures in New York City but you would be shock to see just how diverse our cultures are here. After all for about the last 10 years people from all over America have been moving here because the land is abundent and fairly cheap, and our economy has fallen less here than the most of America has recently.

We also had your 3.8 V6 Ford Explorers in RHD in 1995 for a while as there was a growing popular demand for S.U.V's from the USA during the 1990's.
@JackBandicootsBunker whats your favourite stone roses song?
The dog is happy
:)
they some happy ass ppl! 1:38
Agreed. Jezza's brilliant, isn't he?
lol my dad owns one, i can get it to oversteer and do 2nd gear chirps, and ford makes racing parts for it that u can buy at the dealership and have them install with a warranty
@Jordzindaplace yer i have the same secs and colur is your focus an s reg
still have mine
@1ns4ne1d10t If nobody would choose the ford, why are there more of them on the streets?
@Plisken1986 I have never found a Golf Mk IV to be any of the things you mentioned, whats written on a piece of paper differs to the real world. A Seat Ibiza is supposed to be 0-60 in 15 seconds because its a 1.2 12V with 3cyls, its nothing like that. Its more like 12-11. Because the Polo 1.2 12V is underpowered they assumed the Seat is the same but it isn't, its much lighter & quicker.
Wooo, my first car was an '84 3 series!
@tiansivive yeah I know what you're talking about, the situation is even worse here in Greece, people are being fired every day and university graduates can't find jobs, oh and the taxes have recently DOUBLED on everything.
love this ford, 1.8 zetec and 2.0l zetec good for powerful family cars
And then u get a 2,5L ST :D-Good for the family run again and alot quicker,
and then the RS is about the same but a bit quicker and lighter etc.
Ford focus 2012 is superb on its safety and as a family car and even an executive car-- Why do you think enterprise rent a car always use em!!
...the dog is happy because it's on tv...
You obviously Kept them for short periods of time and sold them on well before they could develop any problems.
does anybody know the song at the beginnig
if you are one yes, I'm merely stating the fact Jeremy Clarkson is now (Now Ross had left) the Biggest BBC Paid star and earns millions and talks as if he can't afford it
@Mr69Deano indeed I agree that you get what you pay for but I have to disagree with the "expensive Audi" claims because if you look at the list prices of a new Ford Focus on poverty spec its actually very nearly on par with an Audi A3 on poverty spec.
10 people stayed at home and ate worms.
Its a Ford, and Ford will always be Ford, need I say any more?
my family have a ford focus :D
Should have done the third row in the estate version like in Mercedes e-class estates. Want to bring friends? Problem solved at least it's good for temporary use AND it's legal
Im not i was just saying that was totally uncalled for im perfectly happy and it took you 11 months to reply.
What's so wrong with Texas? You say that you have different cultures in New York City but you would be shock to see just how diverse our cultures are here. After all for about the last 10 years people from all over America have been moving here because the land is abundent and fairly cheap, and our economy has fallen less here than the most of America has recently.
problem with my clockspring, and my transmission blew... mind you there is 190,000 kms
@rovannon That's the Stone Roses - Fools Gold
@mrstone56 i gets he was
@1ns4ne1d10t I like to change them as i get bored easly, hopefully the focus will be the longest stopper
