  • Two trash-picked Sony Trinitron CPD-G520P CRT monitors. Fancy. Can we bring them back to life through the magic of serial ports and ancient proprietary software?

I still have a working (last time I was using it) Dell P790 with one of these Trinitron tubes down at my parents' place. damn thing could do 1600x1200@60Hz or it could go up to 120Hz at lower resolutions. You have far more patience for these monitors than I would have, before I started using TFTs, I was of the "Can I see a picture on screen? Is it bright & clear enough? Yep, it's good" mindset, so going this deep into calibration, nah, I'd probably have gotten too frustrated with them and introduced them to gravity, or a brick, or something equally destructive... :)

I recently found a Sony HMD-A200, also a flat panel model. on the roadside. These monitors are definitely very cool.
Sadly it only uses one hardwired vga cable as its input, but i cannot complain too much about a free crt.
I will have to clean it up soon, although i am a little scared of all of the voltage. But a bit of compressed air will definitely do it a well deserved service.
It does work well as it is, which is very nice.
Any advice on how to go about giving this thing the tlc it deserves?

Haha, i was drinking few beers and watched this...maybe i'm a masochist? Last time i calibrated my living room 75" LCD month ago, it took me about 3 hours (tweaking done inside the TV's own settings,, Delta values below 0.5 and tracking rec 709, nits around 110-120. Cherry on top of that, when running that TV with computers (PC and Mac), i have DisplayCAL profile on top of that (i use iDisplay Pro) miss those CRT's...last CRT monitor i had, i ordered that brand new around 2004, already when majority were pushing LCD's, when CRT were going out of production, it was a flat 22" inch diamontron (HP branded), i had it all the way to 2016. Great work if recalibrating that old crt tv screen, i really like those trinitron tv’s because it’s design and the picture on screen just looks way more sharper & appealing then on a curved tv set.
Now if all crt tv’s(wich sadly not)were calibratible via software rather then doing it manually, it would,ve been so much easier.
Very ideal for fd crt tv’s wich suffer from geometry issues even from the start!!

As someone who retired his last CRT almost 15 years ago (flicker allergic) but has attacked dozens of LCD monitors and internal displays with his i1Display Pro and DisplayCAL, I found this highly fascinating. In fact I recently recalibrated my trusty NEC 1990SXi and would have loved to discuss the intricacies of calibration with someone... like white point being a bit of a crapshoot. I found that while results with no compensation were close to what a matrix (CCMX) for this combination of gear gives, the spectral compensation (CCSS) file for "LCD CCFL IPS" supplied with i1Profiler asks for a lot more green. So if this is not trustworthy, what about the WLED backlight CCSS? I would have to get a $$$ spectrophotometer to verify, which is rather annoying.
_Somewhat_ higher gamma is not that much of a deal, just use them in the dark. ;) That's where the higher contrast will come in handy anyway. MPC-HC's color management has settings for gamma depending on lighting, with values of 2.35 for dim and 2.4 for dark environments.

    • @FFcossag
      @FFcossag  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Indeed, but the high gamma makes them absolutely useless for image editing (because lol inaccurate) and modern gaming (because you're blind compared to everyone else).

Rocking that 1Display Pro and DisplayCAL combo too ! Of course calibrated via the hardware settings first as close as it can be first, i use my LCD (75" TV) as my computer monitor and also for AppleTV 4k, of course extra tweak inside PC and Mac, the DisplayCAL profiling..i aim for Rec 709 with a gamma of 2.2. I first use the HFCR first when doing hardware calibration, Rec 709, gamma 2.2, aiming delta below 1, then when using DisplayCAL on the same display, i use "native white point"(already calibrated via hardware menus with HCFR) and for display type is select "LCD generic".

The GDM-F520 which is the little brother of the famous GDM-FW900 is capable of 2048x1536 @ 75Hz. Lower resolutions = higher refresh rates, and the motion is so smooth and clear, it's something you don't even come close to with LCD. It also has an aperture grille pitch of .22 which is one of the finest known aperture grille Sony ever made. It was designed specifically for CAD and photo editing. But it's gaming chops became legend along with it's brother the FW900.

If this model is like the CPD-G520/G420, after they have been running for 30 mins or so there's another option that appears in the GUI that lets you do a 'restoration' and that corrects the G2 without even taking the cover off. It's the lazy way to correct the excessive brightness. I assume Sony gave you this feature to counter ageing of the CRT. It rebalances the RGB drive so grey looks grey again too. Great video by the way! Great persistence shown.

the worst decision to me is to have a 4k LG pc monitor which is matt. I kinda like the more contrast and no OLED - blinding spots like Twitch livestreamers playing a dark game but some animation for tips and subs pops up and blinds me in the dark. I love my sony Olympus OEV 143 PVM. Wish I can get iiyama if thats the name. EU or German Ebay has no CRTs except crappy ones then Sony consumer ones, Sony PVMs with some of them having really good prices but being in no-mans-land and the seller dont want to ship crts and PC monitor-wise; it is awful iiyama and sony are the last ones. Thanks for the video! Very informative. I found it very daunting reading about WinDAS but it doesn't look too bad. I have and use a Sony 420GS as my daily driver and to be honest I cannot fault it. Superb colours, blacks, excellent monitor. I did get greedy though and bought a 21" Compaq P1100, rebadged Sony Trinitron and surprise surprise it arrived damaged, even on a pallet. The plastic in the case is so brittle that it arrived in a mess, even the facia has come off and only the bottom part with the buttons is left. Apart from that the screen is exactly like this, like an overexposed photo, the blacks are blue and no amount of fiddling will get it nice. I might actually try this to fix that!
Can you offer any advice about the case? I know there could be 30000 volts going through it so I am just a bit hesitant to use it and finding another P1100 is not gonna happen anytime soon. It's a pity not to keep it running though!

Probably a composite sync connection, some models have separate horizontal and vertical synced making 5 BNC connectors on the back.

At least you dont seem to hate the old windows Xp, most people do, i find it less annoying than later versions, but i have a partition with win 7 for those annoying programs that are made incompatable with xp.
Im sure you will get those monitors nice again :-D.
I would normally turn down the A1's on the line output transformer if all the power supply voltages ring true, old man speaking lol.

zx8401ztv You prefer windows XP to 7 ... What about windows 10 ?
      *Evil laughter*
In all seriousness, I love windows XP, even if the search bar of 7 is must. But what do I know, I use Linux ^^

If I count my legacy PCs I have Win 3.1, 98SE, XP , Vista, 7 and 10. I like 7 most I think but XP was fine Hah, you could run 3.1 in 4 MEG of ram although I have 12M fitted and a 586/133 CPU running under DOS 5.0.
