  • Along Thomas' branch line, there is a bridge near Elsbridge station which crosses over a river and as he passes over the bridge, Thomas often looks forward to the sight of people that fish there. He often wants to stay and watch, but his driver always says no, knowing that Sir Topham Hatt would be cross if they fell behind schedule by stopping to fish. Whenever Thomas meets another engine, he shares with them his desire to fish, but they all tell him the same thing: "engines don't go fishing," which Thomas does not take seriously. One day, he arrives at the junction to find the water tower is out of order. Thomas is thirsty, but his crew decides to get water from the river instead.
The crew finds an old bucket, some rope and go to the bridge. Once there, the driver lowers the bucket down to the water. Unfortunately, the bucket is very old and has five holes so the water leaks out fast and the crew have to hurry and pour it into Thomas' tank before it drains out. They repeat this several times until at last Thomas' thirst is quenched.
As he puffs through the countryside, Thomas develops a sudden pain in his boiler. Steam then rushes from his safety valve at an alarming rate which frightens Thomas that he may burst. The crew dampens down the fire and they struggle on to Ffarquhar. Once they pull up outside the last station, Annie and Clarabel are uncoupled and Thomas, still aching, limps onto a siding out of the way. Then, while the conductor telephones for an engine inspector, workmen arrive and start placing signs all around Thomas saying "DANGER KEEP AWAY". Soon, the inspector and Sir Topham Hatt arrive and the men console Thomas over the situation. The driver explains what happened, and the inspector determines that the feed pipe is blocked.
When the inspector looks inside Thomas' tank, he notices something then climbs down and asks Sir Topham Hatt to take a look in the tank as well. Sir Topham Hatt agrees and is shocked at what he sees inside: fish! Sir Topham Hatt and the inspector agree that it was the fish causing the blockage and that they were collected in the process of Thomas' crew filling the tank. Sir Topham Hatt jokes that Thomas got to go fishing after all, but as fish don't suit him they must be removed at once. The crew carefully fish them out of Thomas' tanks with Sir Topham Hatt supervising and telling the men how to do it. Afterwards, when all of the fish are caught, the men have a splendid meal of fish and chips. Sir Topham Hatt hopes that Thomas has learned his lesson, to which Thomas replies that he now understands why engines don't go fishing; it's too uncomfortable.
