I hear ya fam. First song I heard from The Beasties was Beastie Revolution. It was put out as a single in 85 I think before LTI came out. Couple other jams on there too. MCA vs Bazootie, something like that? But when LTI came out, first single HOLD IT NOW. I couldn't wait to get my cassette copy from my boy at school. His mom worked at Sony records where they shipped cassettes and wax out back in the day for those music clubs. Remember 10 tapes for a penny? He brought in like 30 copies of LTI to school and sold them in like 45 minutes. When I heard Paul Revere it was fuckin crazy. The backwards beat that everyone swore they new what beat it was backwards. If I remember correctly PR was #1 on the nightly top 10 on Power 99 in Philly for like 10 weeks in a row. Power 99 is advertised as Black radio so this was unheard of at the time. Lady B was a DJ who had a hip hop Sunday morning into afternoon show. She lived the Beasties and played them all the time. I remember when LTI just came out she had the BBOYS on her radio show when only like Hold it Now was out at this point. Mike D did basically the whole interview with her. MCA & AdRock couldn't get a word in. She asked Mike D to do some freestyle and he rapped AdRocks lyrics..I'm Mike D the King of all Kings. Couldn't freestyle and then stole AdRocks rap to boot. I wasn't mad at him. Those were the days man! Rap was just starting to blow up,there were so many new groups and crews coming out back then. Truly the Golden Era of Rap. Just think about it,Beasties,RUN-DMC,Public Enemy,EPMD,ERIC B & RAKIM,LL COOL J,BIZ MARKIE,BIG DADDY KANE,BOOGIE DOWN PRODUCTIONS. The list goes on and on. These young dudes have no idea what real rap sounds like. I'm so thankful my 20 yr old son heard me listening to these old skool artists growing up and it's the only rap music he vibes. He can't stand any so called rappers of his time. I didn't force that on him. He just listened while I played these old skool greats in my Jeep and he would always ask me who the artists were. Such a awesome time growing up in that era. Well I know I'm rambling on but I don't know other people other then who I grew up with who dug the Beasties and other rappers of that era. Golden Age....for me I'd say 1983 to 1996 or 97 when we lost Biggie and Tupac. They were kinda the last of that breed. I couldn't name a rapper in the game today. Bunch of fuckin garbage, and I don't need you young mutha fuckas telling me I'm old and I sound old. Much rather be my age and lived at a time to see the greatest era in Rap music. You can have today's shit. Y'all have no clue. I heard a rap song one day when I was working with this young cat,all I heard was nigga, nigga this, nigga that. That's all this so called M.C could say? And most of this new shit doesn't even rhyme? I mean wtf??? Rapping is rhyming! Well it was in my day ,peace niggaThat goes out to y'all youngsters. I know y'all dug it.
It is definitely the hardest slapping beat out of all of them...and definitely badass. My all-time favorite is : "So Watcha Want". brings back memories. But it's hard to pick just ONE.
Make Some Noise should definitely have been on this list. It is a great tune, and is an important part of their legacy. That song took the band full circle. It was great to see these guys get to produce another stroke of brilliance, and get to experience critical and commercial success once again before their unfortunate demise. The fact that the success of the song relied partially on a video which channelled upon their debut is just a happy little accident, in the way that it also helped to display the band returning full circle right before the end. What a way to go out.
I'm with you on that.......the hardcore fans would have Jimmy James, Shadrach, Root Down, Skills, The Move, etc. They are my favorites so I'm glad to see them on this but there's some great stuff that should be here (and sorry but fight for your right....never....that's a joke)
Here’s my personal Top Ten favourite Beastie Boys Songs: 10. Root Down. 9. Brass Monkey. 8. Make some noise. 7. So What’Cha Want. 6. Ch-Check it out. 5. Sure Shot. 4. Intergalactic. 3. No Sleep Till Brooklyn. 2. Fight For Your Right. Honerable mentions. - Too many rappers. - Pass The Mic. - Paul Revere. - Hey Ladies. - She’s Crafty. 1. Sabotage. (Obviously)
Word, that and Posse in Effect two of my favs from LTI. Remember their last show at the Garden when MCA comes across the stage(doing Posse in Effect) saying Yes yes y'all yes yes ye ye yes yes yes yea yes y'all yes yes yes yes yes y'all and the finally the beat drops and they do it. Love that song and loved MCA starting it like that. He did the same thing almost 20 years prior on the LTI Tour in Philly. RIP YAUCH.
Honestly Pass the Mic has to be my fave. It's the one I find myself blasting the most. I also just want to add how much I love how well they do in making sure no one member is more important than the others. It's all even which I always find myself liking.
I think someone young got this gig of putting the list together and probably didn't know much of the Beasties. Liked she looked at a couple songs off a couple albums that got radio play.
I would have been fine with them not including Hey Ladies and including something better from PB. Shake Your Rump definitely belongs on the top 10 though.
Most definitely. Mike and Adam said recently on Falon and whatever that fat white English dudes name is,they're eventually going to put out some unreleased stuff that didn't make the album cuts. I'm sure they have some dope shit we've never heard. I can't wait for that to drop. Just one more album of almost made its. Well until they do a second one.
I'm a 30 year fan and I personally think the 2 songs which best represent the Beastie Boys are "Car Thief" and "Lee Majors Come Again". Both songs have all 3 rappers tossing lines back and forth. Both contain wacky, desultory goofball rhymes with an energetic delivery. "Car Thief" perfectly reflects their early days because they talk about their drug use as well as violence and crime. It's also made entirely of old school samples and is funky as hell. Definitely my fav song. "Lee Majors" is a perfect mix of old school hip hop and hardcore punk. It's on their final album yet would fit easily alongside their tracks from their early 80s punk days. It also kicks ass. You can learn almost everything you need to know about the Beastie Boys sound from those two songs.
My faves are Jimmy James, Super Disco Breakin' and Shadrach. But I love most everything they did - I go back to Licence to Ill now and again and it's still awesome. I'm blessed I got to see them twice - once with Talib Kweli opening.
I first heard the beastie boys when I was about 5 or 6 and just really discovered them about a month ago. How did I live without them in my life in that time.

I listened to Beastie Boys for my whole life and I always seem to come back to the following tracks that I find absolutely masterful: „Pass The Mic“ and „Stand Together“ off the Check Your Head album, „Get it together“ off LicensedTo Ill and „Just A Test“ and „Putting Shame In Your Game“ off Hello Nasty.
Great list only thing I would change is switch "Whatcha Want" and "Fight For Your Right" both are great but I think FFYR was more influential in the long run
