Difference Between Semi and Fully Automatic Espresso Machines

  • We get asked this question very frequently. The answer is one simple expression - 'Shot Timing'.
So, what is 'Shot Timing'? - It is the time taken for the hot pressurised water to pass through the coffee grounds to give you your espresso shot measuring around 30 ml.
In a Semi-automatic machine, the user has to control the timing by sight. Which means you flick the switch and start the pump, let the brew pour out, watch the brew fall into the cup, and when you have estimated visually, that the brew collected in the cup is around 30ml, you flip the switch and stop the pump. This is the procedure you need to follow in a semi-automatic machine.
In a fully automatic machine, the electronics inside have a built-in timer which is programmed to stop the pump automatically after a pre-determined time. So all you have to do is press one button to get the pump started. No visual inspection required and perfect results every time.
In worthy to mention here that the industry standard of 30ml for an espresso shot is not etched in stone.
You could, depending on your personal taste or on the basis of the coffee bean characteristics like roast or origin profile choose to have your espresso shot either less or more than the 30ml suggested shot size.
This variation in the shot quantity can be achieved in both machines.
In the semi-automatic, the running of the pump is in your control anyway.
In the fully automatic, it takes a simple programming procedure to customise your espresso shot.

Hi coffee brewed for only 10-15 seconds ideally it should be for 25-30 seconds can this flow be adjusted ?

    • @tecnoratv
      @tecnoratv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jas,
The 25-30 seconds parameter is true for prosumer and commercial machines with a naked portafilter and a finer coffee grind.
For machines in this category of pressurized portafilters, also classified as 'entry-level machines', the espresso shot is comparable to the ones you get in a coffee shop.
Also, it may be interesting for you to note, that many roasters, now offer a grind called 'home espresso' to match the needs of machines like ours.
To answer your question, no, the flow cannot be adjusted in our machines.
      Cheers!

I've been looking for a quality expresso machine for a few months now. The gaggia and the like category has become too expensive due to import duty. This seems like a safer option. Just had a few questions.
    1) what capacity and material boiler(s) are you using in the automatic version.
    2) Your website says the 801a is a dual boiler machine whereas I saw in one of your videos where you called it a thermoblock. Just wanted some clarification on that.
    3) what size portafilter do you send with the machine ? 58mm ??
    Thanks in advance.

      Hi Karunya,
      Thanks for getting in touch.
Firstly let us be upfront and clarify that the build quality of our machines is not comparable to that of the Gaggia.
Gaggia etc are priced almost 3 times our products for a reason.
So, it's fair to say that our machines are entry level machines.
The terms Boiler and Thermo block are used interchangeably for purposes of simplicity.
However, all our machines have die-cast aluminum Thermo blocks.
All our machines come with 51mm portafilters.
      Cheers!

      Hi Prashant,
Yes, you can. The EPIC can be programmed to dispense your preferred dosage and the flow can also be interrupted by pressing the button again.
      Hope this answers your question.

Hi I just wanna ask how much espresso I can extract from a single shot of coffee

    • @tecnoratv
      @tecnoratv  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi Ricky, the industry standard is 30ml per 7 to 8 grams of coffee for a single shot and double the quantity of coffee for a 60ml double shot.
The spoon we provide scoops up about 7 - 8 grams of coffee powder.
However, you can run the pump for longer for a longer shot. It all depends on your tastebuds. This is a general measure. Most people have anywhere between 30 ml to 50 ml for a single shot depending on the origin and roast profile of the coffee.
Both the semi and fully automatic can dispense your desired quantity. In the semi-automatic, you need to stop the pump manually and in the fully automatic, you need to program it once and it will dispense the same quantity every time. There is no limit to the number of times you can change the program settings. For different kinds of coffee from different roasters, you can change the settings.
      Hope I've answered your question.
      Thanks!
      Rajesh from Tecnora.in

      Hi Anurag,
You can use any coffee powder from roasted beans.
You CANNOT use instant coffee powder.
The blend of the powder (100% Arabica or Arabica/Robusta, or Arabica/Chicory) will determine the coffee experience.

It's a good product overall. It's can't compete with Delonghis and Philips but it's pretty good for the price. As for reliability I haven't had any issue. If you have a budget of 10k then this should be at top of your list.

Lol, just because of the fact that it has the option of one cup or two cups doesnt make it a fully automatic machine. A machine that uses portafilter will always be semi-automatic machine. A fully automatic machine has the capability of preparing a cappuccino, latte, macchiato and all by the press of a single button. Also a fully automatic machine has the capability of storing water, milk and coffee beans (or grounds). Should do your research before making a video xD

      Hi Ishant,
      Thanks for commenting.
What you are referring to is known as 'Super-Automatic" or "Bean-to-cup".
All commercial establishments use a "Fully-Automatic" machine, which has a series of portafilters, also know as multi-group heads. The coffee grinder is separate from these machines, also no milk is stored within these machines.
