One of the main points against college nowadays is that, with all the knowledge available for free on the net, if you just want to educate yourself about anything that interests you, you don't really need it.
I don't agree with that simplistic answer. You DO need to understand how our governement works, why it was established in the way it is, and more importantly, YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND YOUR ROLE IN THE GOVERNMENT. They don't teach that in public schools nor in college anymore, but you need to understand that, especially since you need to study that on your own. Boomers and older Gen X complain that kids have no critical thinking skills; eyeah... you get those in the Liberal Arts section of College. Literature, Writing, History, Philosophy.... How to compare and contrast symbolic colors in a poem. How to see hidden meaning within a set of words. How to even think like that: hiding meaning within words. Seriously, Poetry is the play book for Covert Operations. How to understand History, within a piece of fiction, and how to dissect a novel from that historic point of view. Knowing how the Actions of ancestors established patterns in our way of living, and how those were changed... to extrapolate the potential outcome from a specific incident. All those Job Postings with the words: we need people who can provide invative answers to complex problems/ think outside the box. Yeah, you learn that in Liberal Arts section. You can't learn that from simply reading. You have to be taught how to do that, and they used to teach that all the way through high school. But not anymore, there's no time left after Post Modern Socialism studies and DEI and Abberent Gender Sexual Behaviors.
@@Objective-Observer what makes you believe that people can't learn about govt by reading online? Also, you're less likely to get critical thinking skills from college, college tells you what to think not how to think. You can learn anything by reading.
@@Joe-b6d My apologies for not being more succinct. You cannot trust ANYTHING online. If you want to learn, you need to read books. There is no substitute for facts, than Books. And too many Post Millenials don't have the reading capacity, nor the attention span to accomplish that. Critical Thinking skills, absolutely no one teaches those anymore. I failed to repeat my statement to include that reality. You can't learn that from a book. You can read philosophy, and logic and abstract thinking skills, but putting Critical Thinking across every subject and every day life, you really need to learn that from someone who knows how.
A person could do a deep dive into books and get a very good education, but no one is forcing you so self discipline would have to be high. The biggest problem is that universities have increased their costs much higher than incomes have increased.
College has BECOME a scam. I was a student in the late 60s & early 70s and we had to work damned hard at serious subjects. Now it's micky mouse subjects that you only have to see your tutor once a month & turn in a "paper" twice a year type thing. A bloody joke.
The central issue is the Investment versus the rewards. Would you give someone $100K, if you knew you would never get any of that money back? You would have to spend decades paying on the loan that you gave away. You will have to make sacrifices and live a much lower quality of life, just to pay that loan off. While the institution you gave that money to is living the high life, and turns it's back on you. They made promises, that the money you gave them, will come back to you 10 fold, but that isn't happening. They made a promise and they did not live up to.
Anyone who pays a quarter million for "Networking" is being scammed.

I always thought that college was not supposed to be a job training program, but that's what it seems to have become.

School teaches us that we live on a spinning ball. It is a lie and does not make any sense yet we believe it.
you should have stayed in school
