It's a Type II Dual Carriageway (16.5m) - this basically replaced the Wide Single (15.0m) standard. It's better to have overtaking lanes the whole way IMO than a road with hard shoulders and the suicide lane up the middle.

@@RedKnight-fn6jr , thanks for that. I'd be nervous if broken down, or had to leave the car, in a traffic lane. Wouldn't pass PSDP in my book

@@genghisthegreat2034 There are bays provided at regular intervals - with the traffic levels in mind, I don't think there's the same problem as with the 'smart' motorways in the UK - those roads absolutely need a hard shoulder as all traffic lanes are pretty rammed, particularly during peak times. Regarding the Type II DCs, I guess the planners envision plenty of time (sight lines and the 100kph speed) and space to react. That said, I wouldn't like to be the breakdown guinea pig either - not something I'd like to experience TBH.

@@RedKnight-fn6jr thanks for that background. Like range anxiety with ecar batteries, you'd be eyeing every set of headlights hurtling towards you in that predicament

Soft grass shoulder is fine for the rare time modern cars break down. Just pull in left of the yellow dashed line as much as possible
