    North Randall hit it big with an Amazon Fulfillment Center.
    Now they are building a new Town Hall.

    I enjoyed your production. My people settled in Cleveland in 1913 coming from Italy. Family lived on Superior Ave, and also on Euclid Ave Don't know the addresses... Dad graduated from Cathedral Latin High School. "We" moved south in '62 for my Dad's business. I've been there once in '85 and didn't get to sight see. Cleveland is interesting to me. Had an aunt who lived in the apartment at 1939 Green Rd. I was told it was a snooty area (she was)... I don't know what neighborhood that would be. I seem to recall seeing Lake Erie from her window... I know Shaker Hts is for the rich people. Cleveland is not an easy city to drive if you don't know it. I was always stopping for directions.
    I was reading about the "Mad Butcher" of Cleveland (I don't know why my Dad didn't tell me about him. Dad also knew Eliot Ness from when he was Director of Public Safety for Cleveland). But that's an interesting case. Maybe you could do a video on the geography of the Kingsbury Run. Now and then.

      I wonder where it used to be, cuz there are still probably 6 or 7 'large buildings' in Highland Hills, but as far as I’m aware none of them are Figgie.

    • @sportruby
      @sportruby 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@geography_joe This is a fun, well done video! The Figgie piece is the only thing that I caught in which your facts are a bit off, along with Highland Hills. It wasn't in 1900, it was in 1990. Figgie HQ was in WIlloughby and Highland Hills was incorporated in order to supposedly relocate Figgie HQ to this area, plus create a giant business park (Chagrin Highlands) - mostly on land owned by Jacobs, who really wanted a new highway interchange installed at Harvard Road & I-271. The interchange was approved, then Figgie went bankrupt, and many years later it turned out the secret master plan was to build a new Mall on the site. The end result is an arrangement between Highland Hills, Beachwood and the city of Cleveland cooperating to bring businesses to Chagrin Highlands - and very little retail! Interesting recent history.

    Great video! The geography of the lake shore played a role in East Cleveland. Euclid Avenue runs eastward along the base of the scenic bluff in East Cleveland, where Rockefeller enjoyed the breezes on his summer estate (now Forest Hills Park) and from which his monument still commands a view of the city (Lakeview Cemetery). Many estates, and NELA Park, were tucked into the scenic ravines that cascade down from the heights.

    I loved your video. Although I must say that there were two horse tracks in North Randall Ohio. One was named Randal and it was on the land that Randal Park Mall was built on. Thisledown remanded. There was a underground tunnel connecting them. I drove in it with my grandfather who worked there early on. They were owned by the same man. I don't know which one was there first and is the one you spoke about. But very interesting.

      Well sometime in the next week I plan on making a similar video to this one, just about the West Side suburbs. Hopefully it'll be a little more 'relevant' because people seem to be using this video for moving advice, whereas my goal was simply to educate and entertain. If these videos are serving a purpose greater than that to those who view it, its my job to accommodate for that. Either way, the feedback is greatly appreciated and will be taken into consideration when I make the sequel!

    I'm interested to know what the mayor of Highland hills had to say about running such an usual district?
    Also would these small suburbs be in control of their own services like waste management or do public services fall under larger borders? (not from the usa)

    • @geography_joe
      @geography_joe  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well it really depends (sorry for the late response), like university heights shares almost all of its city services (besides police and taxes) with cleveland heights, and university heights has 13,000 people. Basically every suburb in cuyahoga county with less people than that (aka 20 of them) share the majority of their city services with their larger neighbors. Its the usa, so a lot of cities privately hire the companies which perform these services. The mayor basically said that most of his residents don’t even care/realize they’re in highland hills. The day i went and met him he was organizing a city meeting (so residents could meet their village council) and making a slideshow about their 30-year long history. He’s a great guy actually

    Awesome video! Wouldn't the change in wealth of East Cleveland affect the placement of Bratenahl? As the city of East Cleveland had an economic boost, the RICH residents would want to separate themselves from the "rich" by creating that exclusivity. It wouldn't make sense for those 0.01% to create a city right next to the hood on purpose and if you look at migration patterns of East Cleveland, the wealthy people took their money and migrated east into cities like Pepper Pike, Moreland Hills, Orange, etc.
