1954 here too. This song brings back melancholy memories even though I was still a young child when it came out. Also, it makes me a little sad after watching La Bamba and realizing this selection was played at his funeral.

When I was a kid, in the grand old cinemas, before movies were screened, this piece of music was always played against the red velvet screen cover and the yellow lights in the cinema, with the side pillars of the screen, and the grand apollo sun god chariot right on the middle of the screen top... Hmmm.... Seats were old and squeaky, but we can no longer experience this again. Thanks for the memories. Btw, just love your playing style, clean and smooth.

You must have spent hours and hours listening to Santo and Johnny's original as I could not detect one note omitted. I learned this song in 1965 on an acoustic guitar but I know I could never hit all the notes like you did. Nothing like a steel guitar. Congratulations on your talent. Keep on sharing your music as you are really good. I have a good ear for music but I cannot read a note of music. I have done solo gigs when I was in my 40's. It was one of the greatest times of my life and I was broke.

I played pedal steel guitar with country and rock bands through the 70s, 80s, 90s. Nowadays I play about four gigs a month... that is, before the virus hit!

They had a steel player that did a tolerable job and everybody appreciated it. A classic tune that nobody plays anymore. Also sadly
that relaxed sit back into the chair at the end of the video just breathes satisfaction. This guy knows he can make good vibes out of his own fingertips.

DoogerDog You’re gonna have to take that back. Watch Larkin Poe do this song, That girl on steel is tremendous. I’d have to say there’s room at the top for Meg Lovell. Not taking anything away from this gentleman at all, but there are some great, great players out there. Meg and Rebecca Lovell are making it happen and they’re young. For starters, David Lindley comes to mind, and Robert Randolph is another.
Seems like the art of playing a steel guitar is a fading art, especially with the younger musicians. Slide guitar is one thing but this is actually picking the strings, with a slide. Well done! Love it.

Thanks! Yes, it's very tempting to fill all the spaces with licks and riffs. But I try to keep it simple and true to the original. Santo's style of was simple, mostly single notes, but it's very hard to duplicate his sound and his technique.
I know nothing about the steel guitar or the man playing it but what I do know about is the sound of expertly reproduced music when I hear it and how much time and practice it takes to master an instrument like this. Whoever this guy is he is incredibly good. Thanks for this great video.

you brought me back to my childhood, i heard this song playing in my grandfathers garage all the time on his old timey radio... we'd play eye spy as he worked on cars and motorcycles, and chill out on the hill in our front lawn.. i wish i could have it back, but all those memories are more than enough and its the best things i've got.. thank you
