    Your questions will make or break your interview, so how can you make sure you're asking the right ones? It all comes down to research.
    Read, watch, listen to everything you can that's directly related to your subject and attack your topic tangentially.
    By that I mean think more deeply about how people will relate to your story and find similar stories to inspire your line of questioning - even if they have nothing to do with your documentary on a surface level.
    I've found that's one of the best ways to find questions that take your interviews in interesting directions.

    Thank you so much for the tips! I’m hoping to create my own documentary that requires interviews. I have an issue with uncomfortable silence even in every day conversation (ppl think I’m an extrovert but I’m actually an introvert who HATES uncomfortable silence, so I fill it in as much as possible lol). That last tip will help me tremendously. It’s okay to leave a bit of silence so the other person can fill it in with more information before I start to follow up! Thank you so much

      Definitely ok to leave silence! Think about it like this, you're giving your subject more opportunity to speak. You'll do great, good luck!

    Hey do you have tips for making a 2-3 minute short docu/interview? like how to get the artist to drop really impactfull oneliners and how to get the viewer to search more about the artist?

    • @BillThisdell
      @BillThisdell  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey man, I'd focus on a single moment in their life (or whatever the subject is -- make it very focused). Any great story usually has a goal and an obstacle, so if you can get your artist to speak about what they want and what was stopping them, that's usually a good format. Think about it in terms of emotional peaks and valleys, rather than a series of events.
      Series of events = AND THEN this happened AND THEN this happened = less interesting
      Emotional = goal BUT THEN challenge BUT THEN growth BUT THEN resolution
      As for impactful oneliners -- if they say something interesting but ramble on a bit, you can always ask them to repeat themselves in a tighter soundbite. But focus your questions on how they felt to get more interesting answers.

    I am filming a documentary for my thesis project and I wanted to know if you should ask the subject the question that you are asking and then record or ask the question while you are recording

    • @BillThisdell
      @BillThisdell  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ask the question while you are recording. You never know when the subject will say something interesting so just leave the camera recording for the entire interview.

    So, I'm a few years late...
    But I am doing a videography class, and I have to do an interview and it has to be 1 minute long, but I'm unsure how much I should edit out, without invalidating peoples stories.

    • @BillThisdell
      @BillThisdell  29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Great question! 1 minute is such a short time so I would encourage the subject to tell a story about a single person/memory/feeling and go into a lot of detail about that one thing. Make it very personal or important topic to them so they have a strong opinion. There's a great guy on instagram called Hunter_prosper who asks strangers about someone they love and he gets great answers. I would try something like that. Then when you edit, try and create a set-up and a pay off so it feels like a complete story even though it's short.

      @@BillThisdell I was thinking of doing: How to keep yourself safe as a member of the rainbow community.
      (Mostly my lecturer's idea, edit: I'm apart of the rainbow community but I don't wish to be in front of the camera.)

    • @BillThisdell
      @BillThisdell  27 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@benjim5587 it’s a good subject. I would just try and frame it in a personal story - use an experience to show how you would stay safe rather than just tell people how to stay safe. If the video becomes too instructional it can get boring. Think in terms of storytelling - how did they feel, what were they worried about, what actions did they take, what was the result.
